2018 Future Games - Team Michigan Preview

One of the most anticipated events of the year is finally upon us.

The seventh annual Prep Baseball Report Future Games will take place Aug. 1-4 when top uncommitted prospects in the classes of 2020, 2021 and 2022 converge on Grand Park in Westfield, Ind., just north of Indianapolis. There will be 24 teams, including Team Michigan, with players representing 35 states plus the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Ontario and Quebec.

More than 200 colleges from across the country will be looking on as approximately 500 players participate in this year’s event. In 2017, a record 247 college and professional coaches and scouts were in attendance, an increase of nearly 100 from the year prior.

“The Future Games has quickly become the most highly scouted showcase event in the country by college coaches,” Chris Valentine, PBR Executive Director for Michigan, Ohio, Ontario and New England, said after last year’s event. “As PBR adds new coverage areas, it brings new players and new college coaches to the event. It is exciting to think of the potential as we move forward.”

Participants have come away from the premiere event more than impressed.

“Anybody I talk to I will strongly encourage participating in the Future Games if given a chance,” said Detroit Country Day’s Parker Pilat, a participant a year ago. “I was lucky enough to be a part of Team Michigan and have an experience I will remember.”

Pilot has since committed to Wake Forest, one of a dozen Michigan players from the 2017 Future Games that have finalized college plans.

Another is Jon Campbell of Country Day, a Boston College commit.

“It was eye opening seeing all of the high-level players from the other states,” noted Campbell after participating in the PBR event last year. “I was also amazed by the number of college coaches scouting players. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me.”

Mac Horvath of Rochester Century High School became the second MVP of the Future Games from Minnesota after earning the 2017 honor. Sam Carlson of Burnsville, Minn., was the 2015 MVP. Carlson was a second-round selection of the Mariners in the 2017 MLB Draft.

Dillon Lifrieri of Wilton High School in Connecticut, a 2018 graduate heading to Arkansas, was the 2016 MVP in between the two Minnesota standouts. Duncan Pence of Farragut High School in Tennessee, was the 2014 MVP while Nolan Watson of Lawrence North in Indiana took home the 2013 honor. Watson went on to become a first-round draft pick of the Kansas City Royals in 2015.

“The Future Games has been a huge piece of the recruiting process of several ball players from Michigan and other participating states,” Michigan Director of Scouting Aaron Wilson said. “The lucky gentlemen that are selected are able to compete against some of the country's best in front 200-plus coaches. In my time with PBR I've seen guys go from no offers entering the Future Games, to leaving with a grocery bag full of offers.”

A Michigan squad of 25 players will be among those playing at the state-of-the-art 22-field complex. It starts with an evaluation day on Wednesday in which position players are put through a showcase workout that includes running 60s, batting practice and field evaluation.

Teams will play games on Thursday through Saturday. Michigan will face Canada on Thursday at 12:45 p.m., Pennsylvania on Friday at 9 a.m. and Ohio on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. All Team Michigan games will be on Field D3.

Following is a look at Team Michigan and the thoughts of each player heading into the Future Games.

Scoles:
My spring and summer baseball seasons have been awesome. I played varsity for Gull Lake. My awards this season included: 2018 Rawlings PreSeason Perfect Game All-American; Broke Single-Season ERA record at Gull Lake; All-Conference; All-Area; All-Region; All-District; Battle Creek Enquirer Dream Team; Kalamazoo Gazette Dream Team. Summer Ball for the Kalamazoo Maroons 16U Stanton was phenomenal. I started six games and we won five of those games. We played against competitive competition nationwide. We were at Grand Park in Indianapolis twice, Music City Classic in Nashville, Pastime 17U Notre Dame, and the Perfect Game World Series in Atlanta (36 of the best teams in the country-Invite Only). I averaged five to six strikeouts per game and under two walks per game. Batters batted a minuscule.265 against me.

Aries Gardner OF / 1B / U of D Jesuit, MI / 2020

PBR: Give a short report on your spring baseball season and what you have done this summer.
Gardner:
This past High school baseball season was a solid experience. We lost in the regional championship against Grosse Pointe South who went on to win the state title. This summer so far has been a great experience with the Midland organization. Being away from home and living with the provided host family has made me become responsible. Being coached by two former 10-year-plus big-league players was amazing. This past year I have learned the mental aspect of the game and a lot of the small things that are a vital part of the game.

PBR: What are your thoughts about being part of Team Michigan for the Future Games?
Gardner:
Being apart of Team Michigan is an absolute honor.

PBR: What are your expectations for the event?
Gardner:
The guys on the team are some of the top players in our state and to compete with the other top guys in other state will be a blast. It will bring out the best in everyone due to the level of competition.

PBR: What PBR events have you participated in prior to the Future Games?
Gardner:
I have participated in multiple PBR events mostly Future/ Underclassmen games.

PBR: What colleges have you heard from and considering attending?
Gardner:
I have heard from UofM, MSU, Wright State and Eastern Kentucky. I’m still hearing from new schools pretty frequently. I try to just focus on playing the game hard all the time and let the recruitment come. My mindset is somebody will see what I can become, it’s my job just to play 110 percent all the time.

In the spring, I played and pitched for the District Champion Gull Lake baseball team. I was 6-2 during our high school season. I was selected as one of the top pitchers for the Kalamazoo/ Battle Creek area. I pitched 37 2/3 innings with a 2.79 ERA, 47 Ks and a team-leading 1.2 whip. This summer I played with the Kalamazoo Maroons-Stanton team. I was the #1 pitcher. I pitched against the best teams in our pools the majority of the time. PBR: What are your thoughts about being part of Team Michigan for the Future Games?

Thank you to Aaron Wilson and the entire PBR family. I am very honored and excited to be playing for Team Michigan. We have a great group of players who I have played with and against while I was playing on the Maroons and MCBC Hit Dogs.

PBR: What are your expectations for the event?
Blesch:
I look forward to showing my talents as a RHP/corner infielder. My slider is my best pitch and my fastball has good movement. I have been gunned at 88 mph and hope to throw this at the event. I would love colleges to see what I can do. I will continue to work hard for next season with my goal next year to hit 88-90 mph consistently.

PBR: What PBR events have you participated in prior to the Future Games?
Blesch:
I have participated in the following PBR events: 3/26/16 – Michigan Future Prospects camp; 7/12/16 – The Michigan Future 50 – Class of 2020 (Invite Only); 3/11/17- Maroons Scout Day; 3/3/18 – Preseason All-State (Invite Only); 8/1/18- Future Games. I am currently ranked 7th overall and 2nd RHP for the 2020 Michigan Class.

PBR: What colleges have you heard from and considering attending?
Blesch:
I have just started to reach out to colleges this year. With the NCAA rules I have not talked to many schools directly. I look forward to Sept 1st when recruiting opens up and I can start talking directly with schools. My goal is to find a school that is a great fit for me both academically and athletically.
