Close to 275 players across the state were nominated for post-season awards following a terrific 2019 high school season. Today we are proud to release our six finalists for 2019 PBR Maryland Player of the Year.

2019 PBR MARYland Player of the Year Finalists

 

Jack Bulger C / 3B / DeMatha, MD / 2020

Jack Bulger continued his dominance at the plate as a junior leading DeMatha back to the WCAC Championship Series where the Stags eventually fell to St. John’s. The University of Vanderbilt commit hit .545 with 28 RBI's and scored 28 runs. He collected 42 hits in 30 games which included 6 doubles, 3 triples, and 5 homeruns. 

Ryan Calvert RHP / 1B / La Plata, MD / 2020

Ryan Calvert put up huge numbers both at the plate and on the mound this season for La Plata. The two-way star struck out 13 in the MPSSAA 2A State Championship game and picked up a key 2-RBI double to tie the game in the middle innings as the Warriors knocked off Middletown for their second state championship in four years. Calvert finished with a 0.45 ERA and 8-1 record with one save. The hard throwing righty recorded 121 strikeouts in 62 innings pitched allowing just 12 walks and 26 hits. At the plate, Calvert hit .444 with 13 doubles, 5 homeruns, 40 RBI's and scored 24 runs.

Marcus Lee Sang OF / LHP / Northern, MD / 2019

Marcus Lee Sang led Northern (Cal.) to the MPSSAA 3A State Semifinals for the first time in ten years doubling as the team's ace and leading hitter. The hard throwing lefty struck out 76 in 51 innings pitched to the tune of a 0.55 ERA. At the plate, Lee Sang hit .523 and slugged .938 with 34 hits including 7 doubles, 1 triple, 6 homeruns, 18 RBI's and scored 31 runs. He was also selected in the 11th Round (Pick #330) of the 2019 MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies.

Jose Torres SS / Calvert Hall, MD / 2019

The slick fielding shortstop helped lead Calvert Hall this year to their 11th MIAA "A" Conference title in school history and first since 2013. Torres batted .402 and slugged .729 with 44 RBI's and scored 45 runs for the Cardinals. Torres collected 43 hits on the season including 8 doubles, 3 triples, and 7 homeruns. He was also selected in the 24th Round (Pick #733) of the 2019 MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers. 

John Torroella RHP / Mount Saint Joseph, MD / 2019

The ace of the Gaels staff, John Torroella led Mount St. Joseph to a 20-10 record and third place finish in the MIAA. The Brown University commit threw 55.2 innings striking out 84 to the tune of a 0.84 ERA. Thirteen of those strikeouts came on April 2nd when he threw a no-hitter against then No. 3 Archbishop Spalding.

Tyler Locklear 3B / C / Archbishop Curley, MD / 2019

Locklear backed up a great junior season with another stellar year at the plate. The Virginia Commonwealth University commit hit .500 and slugged .842 in the MIAA "A" Conference with 6 doubles, 1 triple, 6 homeruns, 24 RBI's, and scored 26 runs for the Friars.
