Quick Hits: 2020 Top Prospect Games

Will Arnold
Arizona Director of Scouting

The 2020 Top Prospect Games was held at Grand Canyon University on a scorcher of a day, reaching 113 degree temps. The event featured some of the top uncommitted players in the state during a showcase and game portion of play.

Drew Woody, LHP, Highland
Woody came in looking much more physical and his numbers backed that up. In a little less than 6 months, he has made a 6 MPH jump. His fastball was up to 88, sitting mostly 85-87 from the left side, with good downhill plane. He spun the ball well with a hard slider at 75-78.

Kai Taylor, RHP, Perry
Taylor was up to 89 in his inning of work, which is a 7 MPH jump from January. His arm works well and easy using his lower half well to generate arm speed. Slurvy breaking ball at 77 with good angle and depth.

Caleb Lomeli, RHP, Mountain Pointe
Lomeli offers a different look with an abbreviated arm swing but produced a fastball up to 89 multiple times. He scattered his fastball around the zone, making it an uncomfortable at bat for both righties and lefties. Curve ball was spun well, with good rotation at 67-68.

Brycen Tambone, OF, Perry
One of the best bats in the class, Tambone showed the ability to drive the ball all over the field. His swing works on plane early, giving him a large margin for error and ability to drive the ball to right. All of his numbers increased, most noticeable his arm strength.

Vinnie LaGatta, SS, Valley Christian
LaGatta is a gamer in every sense and the numbers are starting to match it. The left-handed hitter has the ability to defend short, making his improved arm strength an even more valuable tool. He has some pop in his bat as well, pulling balls hard in the air during his BP.

Nicholas Fratantoni, OF/2B, Pinnacle
The high academic student-athlete, Fratantoni continues to improve his numbers in a showcase setting. He hits from a slightly open stance and has good rhythm throughout his smooth swing. As he continues to get stronger, his bat will be his best tool.
