2022 Spring Team Preview: Bishop Hendricken

WARWICK, R.I. - Ed Holloway has been head coach at Bishop Hendricken since 1996 and has high praise about what has been accomplished.

“I’m proud of the program,” the veteran coach said. “The kids work hard and do a good job on the field.”

A study done a few years ago found Bishop Hendricken to be the winningest program in the country. With 22 state titles since 1977, the last coming in 2019, expectations are admittedly high coming off a 13-3 season last year.

“I think we have some positives,” Holloway said about a team loaded with pitching. “We have an experienced team in the outfield but our pitching staff is young. Two of the top three are a sophomore and a junior but we have a good senior pitcher to give us experience.”

Corbin Berard, a Saint Anselm signee, is the senior hurler Holloway referenced, with junior Alex Clemmey and sophomore Ryan Thompson forming a strong 1-2-3 at the top of the rotation. Clemmey, the 29th-ranked junior left-handed pitcher in the country, is a Vanderbilt commit while Thompson, the seventh-rated 2024 RHP in New England, “was probably our number one pitcher at the end of last year,” according to Holloway.

A trio of seniors add depth on the mound in right-handers Connor Kennedy and Dave Lynch along with southpaw Devyn Glenn. Junior Matt Jarmie and sophomore Braxton Pearson, the 61st-rated 2024 RHP in the nation who missed last season, bring more talent to the pitching staff.

“We still have a lot of youth in our pitching rotation,” noted Holloway. “The staff needs to pitch well to get us to where we want to be. We have the talent to do it, but we have to do it on the field.”

Kentucky commit Brandyn Durand, the 36th-ranked senior catcher in the nation, will be behind the plate backed up by senior Jack Hornstein and promising freshman Braeden Campbell.

The infield is deep and talented with Andrew Noland, a Wake Forest recruit ranked 31st in New England’s 2022 class, at third base or first. Garrett Burke is a returning starter at first who can also move over to third with Jack LaRose, the 48th-rated sophomore shortstop in the country, returning to anchor the infield at short. Senior Gian Carroccio, a UMass-Boston commit, will play second and can also move to the outfield. Junior Jason Calderian and sophomore Christian Butera add depth to the infield.

UMass signee Jared Munoz, the top hitter on the team last year, is back in center field with the ninth-rated senior outfielder in New England joined by Brendon McCaffrey and Griffin Crain. McCaffrey is a senior LHP headed to St. Joseph’s College in Maine, while Crain is a Louisville commit ranked 35th in the nation among sophomore outfielders.

“The team on the field is very good talent-wise so I think our defense will be strong,” Holloway summarized. “The big thing about this group is it’s very focused on getting that championship back. They’re showing good bonding so we’re in a good place mentally right now, staying focused to play baseball.

“Staying healthy will be key. Last year we had injuries to our staff. We lost our number one pitcher (Rhode Island commit Dorsy Asencio) to Tommy John.”
