2023 MHSAA Tournament: Division 3 State Final - Bridgman vs Algonac

EAST LANSING - Bridgman tallied four runs in the third inning and Charlie Pagel threw a three-hitter to lead Bridgman past Algonac 7-1 in the Division 3 state finals on Saturday.

The sophomore right-hander fanned five and walked only one, allowing base runners in just three innings.

A walk to Alec MacMartin and a bunt single by Tanner Peters ignited the four-run Bridgman third, which was capped off by a RBI double down the right-field line by Nolan Roberts. Pagel was hit by a pitch and Riley Gloe had a single in the frame, with the Bees also benefiting from an Algonac error.

Pagel and Gloe had base hits in the fifth before a run-scoring single from Roberts.

Algonac, the second-rated team in Michigan in Division 3, scored its lone run in the top of the sixth to pull within 6-1 on a pinch single by Nate Vercammen, a Bridgman error and an RBI single to left-center field by Evan Saddler.

However, a fly out and strikeout ended the frame and, after Bridgman added one run in the last of the sixth, Pagel retired the Muskrats in order in the seventh on two fly balls and a K to end the game.

Prior to the sixth, the only base runners for Algonac came on a Josh Kasner first-inning single and a walk to Tyler Schultz in the fourth.

The Bees final run came on a RBI double down the left-field line by Pagel following a one-out walk to Allwood in the bottom of the sixth.

The championship was the second ever for Bridgman, which captured the Class D crown in 1987. The Bees had lost twice before in the finals, in 1994 in Class D and in 2011 in Division 3.
