2024 Class Rankings Update: Spring Edition

Scott Hood
OK/MO/KS/ARK Assistant Scouting Director

As we finish wrapping up the 2023 Spring campaign, we take look at our updated 2024 class Oklahoma rankings.  After scouring through box scores, talking to high school coaches, collaborating with professional scouts, and our own work on the ground covering games we see a couple of players see their stock rise in this update.  A large part of the Top 10 remains unchanged with those at the top having their usual strong spring seasons.  We do see two new names to the list at the top with Brex Caldwell making another jump on the mound this spring and Bryan Williams Jr making his debut in the Top 10 as he starts to really scratch the surface of his very high ceiling.

There are a lot of different factors when it comes to evaluating players and admittedly there is no perfect formula.  You have to take into consideration a player's tools, their makeup, their physical attributes, their projectability, and most importantly their ability to produce when the ball is live.  We also take into consideration what exactly coaches and scouts at the next level are looking for when they select or recruit prospects.  A player's stock might rise or fall throughout their careers depending on their trajectory and how they are currently playing.  These rankings are a combination of all these factors worked together to compile the 175-player list.

RANKINGS RISERS

Luke Williams OF / LHP / Owasso, OK / 2024

The OU commit sees his stock rise up to number 12 on our most recent update after putting together a strong spring both at the plate and finding his rhythm on the mound.  Williams has played a key role on both sides of the ball for the Rams this spring but what has really caught our attention is his presence on the mound.  Williams has shown some life on the fastball working into the low 90's this spring form the left side and has found his feel for spinning the breaking ball to miss bats at a high level.  Offensively he collects hits and shows the ability to use the whole field while playing above average defense out in center.

Hutch Russell SS / 2B / Carl Albert, OK / 2024

Russell sees a jump in his stock rising 12 spots to number 19 on our list.  Russell has always shown the ability to handle the bat a high level but has upped the power numbers this spring making him one of the more physical bats from the left side in the area.  Russell is a strong athlete that has smooth actions at short and could profile as an offensive second baseman at the next level bringing some power to the position.

Carter Sterling SS / 3B / Oklahoma Christian, OK / 2024

Sterling had a strong performance at the OKC Winter Open and has parlayed that into a big spring for Oklahoma Christian.  Sterling's size at 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds isn't traditional for short stops but he negates these problems by playing underneath the ball at a high level and showing advanced range.  Offensively he's shown the ability to hit the ball out of the ball park giving him a nice power profile at a premium position.

Jett Hope RHP / Bixby, OK / 2024

Hope entered our rankings at number 40 in our last installment and after getting recent eyes on him, he sees a jump to number 26 in this update.  Hope has good size and feel for his delivery on the mound with an attacking fastball sitting 87-89 with strong life.  He is very controlled on the mound and has shown the ability to pound the zone even in tougher situations out of the bullpen.  Hope's breaking ball is still a work in progress, but he shows feel for landing it in the zone and with his hand speed he should be able to finesse a pretty nice looking slider in the future.

Blake Aziere 3B / RHP / Stillwater , OK / 2024

Aziere has played a key role in helping Stillwater make it to the State tournament in 2023 and is starting to make his jump on the mound.  Aziere works the fastball in the upper 80's and shows a swing a miss breaking ball making him an exciting arm to keep an eye on in the future.

Tanner McMurray C / SS / Bishop Kelley, OK / 2024

His older brothers have been making headlines the past couple of weeks at their respective schools but don't sleep on the youngest McMurray has been on a steady rise in the past couple of months thanks to strong performances each time we see him.  He has transitioned nicely to the middle infield where he shows a real feel for making tough plays look easy.  Offensively, he has only seen his game continue to improve and has turned himself into one of the tougher outs in 5A throughout the year as well as shown the knack for picking up big hits in big moments.
