2018 5A State Championship Series

Arapahoe 8 Mountain Vista 1
Going into the championship series, the Mountain Vista Golden Eagles were undefeated and surely looking to win a state championship.  However, they met an extremely confident Arapahoe team on Monday and Drew Hayes on the bump.    Drew Hayes (2018) threw a complete game allowing just 3 hits and one of those being a home run for Mountain Vista’s only run.

Heritage 7 Mountain Range 0
Heritage came in as the number 3 seed in the championship series, and showed why by beating up on number 6 seed Mountain Range.  Heritage scored 4 runs in the bottom of the third and then another 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th, but with Riley Egloff (2018) they didn’t need all those runs.  Riley threw a complete game shutout allowing just 4 hits to go along with 9 strike outs.  At the dish, A. Jimenez-Quezada (2018) was 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Pine Creek 3 Rock Canyon 2
Pine Creek came into the championship series and the number 2 seed, and faced a very good Rock Canyon team on Monday.  Pine Creek was leading the game 3 to 0 going into the top of the 6th when Rock Canyon finally pushed a run across and then in the 7th they added another run, but were shut down in the top of the 7th.  Pine Creek’s Evan Faucher (2019) was 2 for 2 with an RBI, but the big guy for Pine Creek was pitcher Riley Cornelio (2019).  Riley went 3 for 3 with an RBI, and then on the mound he threw 5.2 innings allowing just 3 hits, 1 earned run and struck out 6 Rock Canyon batters.

Cherokee Trail 8 Rocky Mountain 7
In a back and forth game, Cherokee Trail came up big in the bottom of the 7th inning.  Trailing 7 to 6 ending into their last at bats, Cherokee Trail was able to push across 2 runs to win the game.  For Rocky Mountain, Garrett Fisher (2019) had a big day at the plate, going 3 for 4 with 2 RBI’s.

By winning their first game, four teams advance to play in the afternoon.  The winners of these two games will square off tomorrow at 3pm to determine who is in the driver’s seat heading into the weekend and potentially winning a State Championship.

Heritage 12 Pine Creek 2
Pine Creek was holding a 2 run lead going into the bottom of the 5th, when the Eagles took off, scoring an amazing 12 runs to not only win the game but to do it in five innings and save some important pitching for tomorrow.  Heritage’s freshman Alex Champagne (2021) went 2 for 2 with 2 RBI’s and G. Kozlowitz (2019) went 2 for 3 with 4 RBI’s.  This win by Heritage assures them of being in the Final Four this coming weekend.

Arapahoe 9 Cherokee Trail 1
Arapahoe came out swinging early and often taking an 8 run lead, and never looked back beating up on Cherokee Trail.  Arapahoe will play Heritage tomorrow at 3pm, to see who is in the prime lead to win the State Championship.  Arapahoe is assured of playing in the Final Four, win or lose.
