2018 5A State Championship Series DAY 2

Mountain Vista 2 Rocky Mountain 2
In a must win game on Tuesday, the Golden Eagles from Mountain Vista came back to beat the defending state champions from Rock Mountain, and move on to play in the afternoon against Pine Creek in another elimination game.  Rocky Mountain took an early lead 1 to 0 in the top of the third inning, but in the bottom of the 5th Mountain Vista was able to push a run across to tie the game up, and then in the bottom of the 7th the Golden Eagles scored the winning run.  Mountain Vista pitcher Jack Liffrig (2018) was huge on the mound going 5 innings, allowing just 3 hits, 1 earned run, and struck out 6 Lobos.  At the plate, Eric Aragon (2019) was 1 for 3, with an RBI, and hit a home run. By winning Mountain Vista moved on to play Pine Creek in the afternoon game.

Mountain Range 4 Rock Canyon 0
Mountain Range defeated and eliminated Rock Canyon from the tournament on Tuesday with a strong performance from pitcher Mike Polson (2018), he threw a complete game shutout allowing just 4 hits to go along with 6 strike outs.  At the dish for Mountain Range Angelo Domenico (2019) had a great day going 1 for 3 with 2 RBI’s.  By winning Mountain Range moved on to the afternoon game vs Cherokee Trail.

Mountain Vista 5 Pine Creek 4
With the top two teams seeded in the tournament bracket when it was released to be, playing for their lives and a chance to move on the Final 4 is amazing.  Both teams had undefeated records in state until Tuesday when both teams lost, and this was one heck of a game.  Mountain Vista, short on pitching, relied on Ben Cole (2020) who threw a complete game, but had not thrown a varsity inning all season. Mountain Vista scored 4 runs in the top of the third inning, and Clay Burke (2019) had a two run double in the that inning.

Mountain Range 6 Cherokee Trail 4
Mountain Range was trailing 2 to 0 going into the top of the 4th inning, and then put up a 3 spot to take the lead for half and inning, because in the bottom of the 4th Cherokee Trail tied the game back up with a run.  Mountain Range was not going to be denied moving on to the Final 4, and scored 2 in the 6th and 1 in the 7th to win the game and eliminate Cherokee Trail.  Mountain Range was led by, Jacob Simmons (2018) who was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI’s.

Heritage 7 Arapahoe 4
In the game to decide who was going to go into the Final 4 undefeated and really set themselves up nicely, the Heritage Eagles stepped up and big coming back from giving up 4 runs in the 1st inning by scoring 5 in the bottom of the 2nd, and then shutout Arapahoe the rest of the way.  Heritage was led by, Eric McKnight (2019) who took over after a third of an inning and threw 5 innings, allowing 5 hits, 0 runs, and 5 strike outs.  At the dish, C. Cummiskey (2020) was 1 for 2, but drove in 2 runs.
