Catholic Blue

No. 1 Mount Carmel (23-2; 9-2) was ambushed in Glenview by Loyola 3-1 on Monday (See Sean Duncan’s gamer).

No. 4 Providence (18-6; 9-2) rolled past Brother Rice 5-1 in Mount Greenwood on Monday. Notre Dame-bound LHP Zak Kutsulis (5-1) fired a four-hitter at the Crusaders with seven strikeouts. Celtic senior 1B Kevin Tully singled home senior RF Kenny King, who had tripled to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the second. Arizona-bound Ryan Koziol, who spent his first three seasons at Brother Rice, broke the game open with a clutch two-run single in the Celtics’ three-run sixth.

Brother Rice (15-9; 6-4) senior Sean McGrath went deep against Kutsulis in the first inning for the lone Crusader run. The two clubs will meet again in New Lenox on Wednesday.

Central Suburban Crossovers

No. 14 Maine South (19-3; 8-0 South) defeated Maine East behind the Hawks dynamic-duo of Iowa-bound C Jimmy Frankos and senior RHP Rocky Saavedra. Frankos had two more hits and drove in a big MS run. Saavedra (5-0) fired 1 2/3 innings of shutout relief to pick up the win for the CSL-South leaders.

Glenbrook South (16-6; 6-2 South) defeated Maine West 4-2 behind Titan junior LHP Kyle Pauly (4-1). Pauly struck out a dozen Warrior hitters in his 6 2/3 inning winning performance.

No. 20 Niles West (19-5; 5-3 South) continued its slide with 13-2 pounding in five innings from district rival Niles North (14-12; 2-6 North).

Glenbrook North (18-7, 7-1 North) defeated Evanston 5-1 behind Bradley-bound RHP Peter Resnick. Resnick fired a three-hitter at the Wildkits with 10 strikeouts. Eastern Illinois-bound battery-mate C Jason Scholl plated a pair of Spartan runs.

DuPage Valley

Wheaton North (15-8; 8-2) defeated West Aurora 4-2 as Falcon senior Ed Norris (6-2) won again for the DVC co-leaders.

Naperville Central (14-8; 8-2) won a 4-3 thriller in 11 innings over Glenbard North to stay atop the DVC standings with Wheaton North. Redhawk junior Jeff Schank drove home a pair of runs for NC and picked up the win on the mound for the ‘Hawks as well. Glenbard North falls to (14-8; 7-3).

East Suburban Catholic

No. 8 Marist (19-5; 7-0) won a thriller in Arlington Heights on Monday. Redhawk University of Notre Dame bound Mike Hearne (6-2) fired nine shutout innings against the Lions to pick up a big 1-0 win for Marist in 10 innings. Junior Cody Bohanek singled home the eventual game-winner in the top of the tenth and then slammed the door on the Lions in the bottom of the 10th to nail down the save for the ESCC leaders.

Mid Suburban East

Hersey (17-4; 7-3) defeated Elk Grove 5-2 behind Huskie Dartmouth-bound Mike Danielak (5-1). Danileak fired a three-hitter against the Grenadiers with 11 strikeouts.

Buffalo Grove (10-14; 5-5) slammed Rolling Meadows 8-4 behind Bison Rich Zringilbi, who doubled three times and added a single and drove home two Bison runs. With the loss Rolling Meadows falls to (14-10;6-4).

Mid-Suburban West

Barrington (16-8; 6-4) slipped past Palatine 1-0 behind a two-hit shutout from Bronco senior Frank Waliczek (7-1). Waliczek fanned an even dozen Pirate hitters. Bronco senior Aaron Foley launched a rocket into the gloomy Palatine sky, leading off the Bronco fifth, for the only run of this MSL battle.

Mississippi Valley

No. 11 Troy-Triad (19-5; 7-0) scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and deciding seventh, to rally past Highland 3-2 in a crucial MVC showdown in Troy on Monday. Knight senior Ty Lewis (5-1) allowed the Bulldogs a pair of runs in the fourth and then shut them down, finishing with a five-hitter to pick up the win on the mound.

Junior Cody Massey had two hits for the Knights. Fellow junior Keaton Wright and senior Adam Range had huge RBI for the 11th-ranked Knights.

NIC-10

Rockford Boylan (16-7; 8-0) won for the 12th straight time, defeating Rockford Jefferson 6-2, behind Titan junior Dan Appino. Appino fired a

six-hitter at Rockford Jeff. Titan Joe Kubera tripled and singled to lead the Titan attack on Monday.

On Tuesday, the Titans will be at Machesney Park Harlem (18-6; 7-1) in the NIC-10 game of the year.

Machesney Park Harlem (18-6; 7-1) blasted Rockford East 10-0 in five innings behind a one-hit shutout from Huskie junior Cody Dietz. Huskie Sam Parlapiano had three hits to lead the Harlem assault on the E-Rabs.

Upstate 8 River

St. Charles East (14-6; 12-3) blanked defending U8C River champ Streamwood 6-0 behind a complete-game win from Fighting Saint junior pitcher Nick Huskison. Senior Jordan Hayes had three hits and plated two runs for the River leaders.

West Suburban Gold

Addison Trail (18-7; 9-1) defeated Leyden 6-3 as the West Suburban Gold leaders open up a full-game lead on No. 21 Hinsdale South (17-4; 8-2).

The two-clubs will play two at 2 on Saturday in Addison. The PBR’s Drake Skleba will be in Addison for all of the WSC-Gold action.

Nonconference

No. 3 Plainfield North (22-2) got hammered 15-2 by Neuqua Valley (16-7) on Monday in Plainfield. Neuqua Valley was led by its pair of future Big Ten players. Purdue-bound Jack Amaro went deep with a pair of Wildcats aboard. University of Illinois-bound Nick Blackburn had three hits and three RBI to lead NV. Wildcat junior RHP Cody Coll (2-1) picked up the win.

The defensive meltdown virus that has infected the whole state this year, bit the third-ranked Tigers on Monday. PN committed a whopping seven errors in its debacle in Plainfield.

No. 9 Benton (25-4) destroyed Carbondale 15-2 in five innings at Carbondale on Monday. Ranger senior Trey Garrett (6-0) fired a five-hitter at the Terriers. Cody Smith hit his second homer of the season with the sacks full of Rangers. The Rangers dynamic-duo of Garrett and Bradley-University-bound SS Ty Leffler each plated three Benton runs.

Leffler has 16 homers and 48 RBI to lead the Rangers in both categories. Garrett has gone deep four times with 44 RBI. Ranger leadoff man Cody Smith has 25 stolen bases in 27 attempts for the ninth-ranked Rangers.

South Seven Conference leader Mount Vernon (20-6) fell to Murphysboro 5-2 in Mount Vernon on Monday.

Grayslake Central (17-5) bombed Round Lake 14-2 in five innings behind Ram Jon Gurchak who hit a grand-slam, a three-run bomb and drove home 10 for the Fox Valley Fox leaders.

Crystal Lake South (18-7) defeated Wauconda 6-4 in a nonconference game on Monday. Gator Nick Severino drove home a pair of Gator runs making a winner out of 6-foot-3 junior Eric Schiller (1-0).

Burlington Central (17-6) slipped past Huntley 3-2 behind Rocket senior C Tanner Scott. Scott went deep for the 10th time this season and drove in two big Rocket runs. Zach Ranney (6-0) fired a four-hitter at the Red Raiders. Red Raider junior SS Bryce Only homered and plated a pair of Huntley runs.
