Arizona Fall Review: Preview

By Arizona Staff

This Sunday, Dec. 8, the PBR Arizona team is hosting its final event of 2019, the Arizona Fall Review, at Seton Catholic Prep in Chandler, Ariz., open to all high school classes (graduation years 2023 to 2020). The showcase is still accepting registrations and already has a roster over 60 prospects set to attend.

Among the 60-plus names headed to Seton Catholic Prep on Sunday is C Tanner Smith (Basha, 2021), an Oregon State commit. Smith, the No. 6-ranked prospect in the state’s junior class, is strong, compact athlete with big and broad shoulders that fit the prototypical catcher’s mold. He swings a fast, robust right-handed bat. His ability to hit at a high level has long been his carrying tool, but his gains defensively are what helped him land a commitment to one of the nation’s top programs. We haven’t seen Smith since the summer of 2018, either, so we’ll be looking forward to checking back in on him and the upside he brings.

There are plenty of other ranked 2021 prospects headed to Sunday’s event, too, including RHP Augie Walters (Brophy College Prep) and C Steven Stewart (Ironwood), both of whom are uncommitted. Walters represented Team Arizona at the 2018 PBR Future Games with a highly projectable 6-foot-4 frame and a mid-80s fastball that has helped him become the No. 21-ranked prospect in the state’s junior class. As for Stewart, he’s a switch-hit catcher with an efficient catch-and-throw skillset and premium athleticism for the position. He came away from our Top Prospect Games event back in June as one of the better defenders, and we’ll see what strides he’s made offensively since.

Outside of the 2021 class coming on Sunday, be watchful for sophomore Trenton Harrington (Chaparral, 2022), a two-way talent with an especially bright future on the mound. He’s built at a lean 6-foot-1 and sat 79-81 mph at June’s Class of 2022 Top Prospect Games. We’ll see if there’s been a jump on the mound in the six months since.

An uncommitted senior name to know ahead of the Fall Review is 1B Bobby Koch (Horizon), ranked just outside the state’s top-50. He’s a lanky 6-foot-3 with balanced, simple right-handed swing. He swings with a pull-side approach and makes hard, line-drive contact at a pretty consistent rate. Koch moves well around the bag, too.
