Team Notes

Things are starting to get very interesting, we are getting deeper into region play and teams are trading blows. The 6A Premier Region is showing to be the strongest region in the state, with all 5 teams being ranked in the P25. Brophy currently stands at the top of that region, and with 6 games remaining for the Broncos, we will see if they can continue their run and finish at the top of the state scariest region. Things are getting interesting in the 6A Desert Valley Region as well. #4 Mountain Ridge remains at the top of the Desert Valley, with 4 region play games remaining, including a two game set to finish the year vs Chaparral. Corona Del Sol and Queen Creek are battling for the top of the 6A Central Region. And Alhambra has shown they will not go away, putting up eye popping numbers in all categories. Five 5A schools are in the top 10 in this rankings update, and those five are all making their case to be top dog. But, Nogales still remains unbeaten and are the only team to do so at this point in the season. And the 4A Division may be the most interesting of all the divisions. With a number of great teams with great records, whoever ends up at the top of the 4A Division will most definitely have earned it.

In this week's P25 Rankings update, we have one new team in the top 10 (Alhambra), one new team in the top 25 (Verrado), and Chaparral makes their way back into the rankings after dropping out for one week.

#6 Alhambra (19-1)

Ranked #14 last week, Alhambra jumps into the top 10 at the #6 spot after continuing to rack up the W's. Alhambra could be among the first teams to reach 20 wins on the season, and a big one of those wins came last week vs Mountain Ridge. Alhambra's strength of schedule is not the strongest, and matching up against #4 Mountain Ridge was their first big test. Alhambra gave the ball to their ace, Marco Pacheco, and he did what he has done all season, shut down opposing offenses and win ball games. Alhambra has been impressive on both end this year, allowing 1.8 runs per game, and scoring 7.7 runs per game. They have been on the winning end of 8 shut outs in 2022. They're an upperclassmen led team, getting a majority of their production from their senior class. Last year seemed as if it could've been the year Alhambra won a state title.. this year they're making their case once again.

Runs Scored: 232

Runs Allowed: 36

#20 Mesquite (16-8-1)

The 2021 Defending State Champion Mesquite Wildcats got off to a rocky start in the 2022 spring season. They began the season with 6 straight losses after an opening day win. Maybe it was a Super Bowl hangover? Or maybe they were just testing themselves with great early season competition. But never mind the early season skid because the Wildcats are back. Since those early losses, they have gone 14-2-1, and they just added a key piece to their team that will help elevate them even more. 2022 DJ Barrett made the transfer from Hamilton to Mesquite and had to serve his suspension. With Barrett added to the mix, Mesquite now has another front line arm and big bat in the middle of their order. Mesquite is currently on a five game win streak, as they look to keep that streak rolling into the playoffs and turn that to a double digit streak.

Runs Scored: 246

Runs Allowed: 135

NR Desert Vista (13-8-2)

In the 2021 spring season, the Desert Vista Thunder finished the year with a (4-16) record. Just one year later and a coaching change, and DV is back in the mix. DV has been playing team baseball, with a scrappy offense and a skilled pitching staff, this could be a dark horse team moving into the post season. This is an athletic and versatile team led by upperclassmen, that can play defense, run the bases, play small ball, and can pitch it pretty well. One thing Desert Vista does have that can get them deeper than most in the playoffs, is multiple talented starting pitchers. Bryce McKnight, Michael Trausch, Michael Caruso, and Drew Gilbert are all winning options that can keep this DV lineup in ball games and allow them a chance to scratch runs across. Desert Vista remains 'On the Bubble' in the P25 Rankings, but with seven tough games remaining, the Thunder could find themselves in the top 25 pending their success.

Runs Scored: 152

Runs Allowed: 132
