By Chris Fuller
Kentucky Scouting Director

The Class of 2015/2016 Fall Prospect Games took place on October 19 at Bellarmine University and afforded prospects to showcase their abilities in a showcase/game play format.  Players were split into two teams with position players taking extended infield/outfield and batting practice on the field prior to playing a double-header.

The following is a look at pitchers who took the mound for Team Gray during game play.  This is pitching analysis only.  Those pitchers who also played a position during the event will have their position player analysis featured in a subsequent article.

Jeffrey Purnell, RHP/SS, Boone County HS, 2016
6-foot-3, 175-pound prospect, lanky frame that projects well, has an up tempo delivery with good lower half direction, arm is quick and works through a high-3/4 arm slot, fastball sat 83-85 mph with occasional arm-side run, shows good feel for 67-71 mph curveball with sharp 11/5 action, good arm action on 74 mph changeup that shows significant arm-side run and sink, allowed one hit and struck out four in his two innings of work, projects for additional velocity, high-level class of 2016 prospect.

Hunter Turner, RHP/1B, Cooper HS, 2016
6-foot, 215-pound prospect uses long arm action through a high-3/4 slot, minimal effort in delivery, works the lower part of the strike zone well, fastball is mostly straight and sat 79-84 mph touching 85 on one occasion, shows good command of 67-71 mph curveball with 11/5 action, changeup is thrown with good arm action at 73-77 mph with some sinking action, solid prospect on the mound and an interesting one to follow in the 2016 class.

Sam Shelley, RHP, Lafayette HS, 2015
6-foot, 175-pound prospect, athletic frame with room to fill in, uses long arm action through a high-3/4 arm slot, showed an increase in velocity from previous event as fastball sat 79-82 mph with late sink, curveball showed mostly 12/6 action at 68-72 mph, throws a 74 mph changeup with good arm action that has some sink, would like to see more utilization of the changeup as it has potential to be a very good pitch, allowed one hit and walked one while striking out three in two innings of work, has potential to continue to see increase in velocity.

Joshua Miller, LHP, Tates Creek HS, 2015
6-foot, 186-pound prospect uses long arm action through a high-3/4 arm slot, regular effort in delivery, fastball sat 78-80 mph topping at 82 on one occasion and shows occasional slight arm-side run, showed a 67-69 mph curveball with 1/7 action and a harder 72-74 mph slider with some bite, uses the breaking balls well and showed the ability to throw the back heel breaking ball to right-handed hitters, struggled some with command but got better as outing went along, allowed two hits, walked four and struck out seven in his three innings of work, interesting prospect with good upside.

Jackson Boggs, OF/RHP, Lafayette HS, 2016
6-foot, 165-pound prospect, athletic frame with projection, arm is loose and works through a ¾ arm slot, arm shows quickness, fastball shows good arm-side run at 77-80 mph, showed a 62-63 mph curveball with 11/5 action and a harder 73 mph slider with sharper break, changeup is a solid pitch thrown with good arm action at 71 mph with sink and fade, allowed four singles and hit a batter in his two innings of work.

Aaron Miley, RHP, Lexington Christian Academy, 2016
6-foot, 185-pound prospect uses long arm action through a ¾ to high ¾ arm slot, shows regular effort in delivery and keeps lower half online, fastball shows good arm-side run at 78-80 mph, good feel for curveball at 62-66 mph with 11/5 action and some depth, consistently throws the curveball for strikes, also showed a 68 mph changeup, hits spots well and works both sides of the plate, allowed one hit, walked two, and struck out four in three innings of work, knows how to pitch and use his stuff effectively.

Kenton Hibbard, 1B/RHP, Boone County HS, 2016
6-foot-2, 210-pound prospect uses short arm action through a high-3/4 arm slot, fastball sat 72-76 mph topping at 77 and is mostly straight, showed good command of 63-64 mph curveball that showed solid 11/5 action with some depth and has confidence to throw it, struggled early with command but settled in to allow one hit with two walks in his two innings of work.

Ryan Baskent, 1B/RHP, Diamond Ranch Academy (UT), 2015
6-foot-3, 180-pound prospect uses shorter arm action and works through a ¾ arm slot, tends to fall off some to first base side, fastball shows some arm-side run at 69-72 mph, likes to drop down on 58-60 mph curveball producing lateral action, allowed one hit and hit a batter in his one inning of work on the mound in game action.
