Chatfield at Columbine - 4/23/14

By Jordan Cantalamessa
Regional Scout/Showcase Evaluator

Austin Anderson, SS, Columbine HS, 2014 (UNLV commit)

5-foot-11, 175 pound, athletic frame. Very solid player/athlete on the field. Very strong arm, straight
trajectory, good carry across the diamond on balls right at him, and displays the same arm strength
throwing from deep in the hole. Tends to overthrow on occasion which affects his accuracy. He
airmailed a few during pregame infield and once during the game. Has great footwork and foot speed,
takes great angles toward ground balls and has a quick glove to hand transfer. Has good range on balls
to his left and right. Soft and quick hands while turning a double play. Looks smooth in his movements.
Great vertical displayed on a line drive above his head that he snagged with ease. Swings the bat very
well. Showed signs of hitting for power on an opposite field ground rule double. Displays patience at
the plate and a good eye for the strike zone. Identifies off speed pitches well, keeps hands back and
didn’t get fooled too often. Has the ability to turn on inside pitches very well, keeps his hands tight to
his body and has explosive hip torque. He ran 4.3sec home to first. Hustles hard on and off the field.
Went 3-4 on the day and made a notable over the shoulder catch on a fly ball to short centerfield. High
follow player to watch, will only get better as he moves to the next level. Should garner interest in this
year’s draft.

Blake Weiman, LHP, Columbine HS, 2014 (Kansas University Commit)

Lanky 6-foot-4, 195-pound frame, that will transition nicely to the college ranks where he will be able
to develop physically even more as a freshman. Long arms and big hands. Is very athletic on the mound
for his height, and displays a highly competitive demeanor on mound. Whipping arm action, high leg
kick and release from 3/4 slot, locates his fastball well, works nose over toes very well; keeps the ball in
lower-half of strike zone. Threw his fastball consistently in the 83-85mph range for most of the game,
touching 86mph on occasion. Fastball had nice movement running in on left handed batters. Changeup
displayed in the 76-78mph range. He also flashed his curveball that showed nice bite late in the strike
zone. Also mixed in a slurve at times, with a tight sweeping spin, that starts at the batter and breaks
sharply across the plate. Made a few pick moves to first base, which he conceals well, imitating his
movement to home. Almost picked off two runners, one of which should have been called out. He is a
competitor, and pounds the strike zone early and often. For the game, he struck out five hitters, made a
few mistakes late, walking 3 in the 7th position. A good follow to keep tabs on, as he continues to develop, should turn into a solid 3 or 4 at Kansas.

Nick Chamberlain, RHP, Chatfield HS, 2014 (Salt Lake City CC Commit)

Medium frame, 6-foot-1, 160 pound right-hander. Throws the ball almost over the top on delivery, with
a high leg kick. Tends to throw with his upper body and strong arm his pitches rather than leveraging a
good forward lean on his follow through. This has an effect on his fastball, which he threw consistently
around 80-82mph, topping out at 84mph on a few occasions. His best and most effective pitch looked
to be his curveball which he disguises well, throwing it with the same tempo and delivery as his fastball.
His curveball was consistently thrown around 67-68mph which has some nice break starting about
from the plate. He struggled a bit on the mound, leaving pitches up in the zone, which hitters took
advantage of, tagging for a pair of homeruns and 1 grand slam. Couldn’t seem to find the strike zone
consistently thereafter. Columbine's Nos. 5-9 in the order were a combined 7-of-16 with seven RBIs and
five runs scored.

Donny Ortiz, 2B, Columbine HS, 2014

5-foot-8, solid 155lbs, athletic middle infielder. Right-handed hitter and room to add additional
strength. Has great foot work, moving smoothly on ground balls to his left and right. Displays good
range, however, on a ball to his right, he tried to backhand instead of getting in front of the ball.
Consistent fielder with a good but not great arm, perfect for 2B. Flashed quick hands on double
play balls, with a smooth transition from glove to hand. Adjusted well on bad hops. Swings the bat
well, with an open stance. Makes good consistent contact and runs hard out of the box. Not the
fastest runner but he hustles hard up the line. Should make for a solid college player and with some
development could be a prospect at the next level.
