Concordia Academy’s Josh Kirchhoff possesses a fastball that can reach 88 miles per hour while it spins up to the plate at over 2,300 RPMs. This future #JuCoBandit is taking that weapon to Iowa Central next fall. Kirchhoff recently joined the Ducks On The Pond podcast to discuss his recruiting process and commitment to the Tritons.

Why Iowa Central?

It came down to me the pitching development they have there. I got to talk with [pitching coach Jonas] Lovin and the things they did in season and out of season talked to me, personally. They do a lot of mobility training as well as your stereotypical Driveline program and stability loads, that's kind of my deal. That, and the culture that Coach Eric Stein brought in there, it's really team-oriented and they win a lot so I was excited about that.

When did the recruiting start for you?

Right after the March PBR event. That's when I started hearing from schools a little bit. I went to a few school visits in August and made my decision in October. I talked to my high school coach and my club coach and we had a conversation that was like, it's crazy that kids in my class only got four months of recruitment. The fact that we only had four months to find a school and talk with them enough to decide that I'm ready to commit here, it's kind of crazy.

What was the recruitment process like and when did you decide to commit?

I remember the first text I got. It was kind of like a fever dream, it's like, oh it's finally happening. I worked this hard and I'm finally starting to hear from schools. I was actually in Atlanta at the PBR World Series event there when I got a text from Coach Lovin, the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator. Then we just stayed in contact for the next month -- I kept him updated on how our summer season was going -- and we tried to iron out a date to visit campus. I remember stepping on campus and it just felt different. I had visited two other schools before that. Each school had a different vibe but Iowa Central felt like home. Everyone was super welcoming. Coach Lovin took a lot of time to show me around campus and the off-campus sites they were doing. It really just felt different.

I've been helping some of my friends through their recruitment process and giving them what I've experienced and the biggest thing is when you know, you know. It's definitely different to visit a school you know you are going to commit to versus ones that you might not.
