Commitment Spotlight: Gray Bailey

Brett Thorney
State Scouting Director

Back at the end of February, 2021 LHP Gray Bailey of Mountain Ridge HS committed to play baseball for the University of Texas- Arlington Mavericks. Bailey was a 2019 Future Games participant and was off the solid start duringi the 2020 season before the season was cut short. He was being used in a big role at the front of the Mountain Ridge pitching rotation. UT-Arlington is getting a projectable LHP with clean actions that should make even greater strides on the mound. PBR caught up with Bailey to ask him a some questions about his recruiting experience:

Scouting Report

7/31/19

The 6-foot 165 pound southpaw can flat out pitch. He controlled every count in his 2 innings of work.  He worked 80-83 with deception and above average command of his FB.  Pair that with a 66-70 mph CB and 76-77 mph CH that he also commands, and you have the look of a pitchability LHP that will be ready to contribute to a college program as soon as he steps foot on campus.  He will add velocity as he fills out and should be a highly sought after recruit.

6/12/19

6’ 160-pound frame with plenty of room for strength. The left-handed hitter has good rhythm throughout swing. Create good separation, keeping hands back as he moved forward. Gets lower half through, allowing him to stay in the zone. Middle approach. Exit velo at 87 MPH. From the outfield uses a pro step to get in line with target. Arm was up to 82, after pitching two days before so took it easy.

PBR: Why did you choose the school you did?

Bailey: I chose the University of Texas- Arlington because it felt like the right fit when I was on campus. The coaching staff is amazing and I could see myself playing for them after my high school career.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Bailey: The other schools I were considering were Akron, Air Force, and Oregon.

PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you? How did it start developing a relationship with him?

Bailey: The coaching staff first saw me from videos that I had sent to Coach Wente. We then began to get into touch and talk a lot about myself, baseball and the UTA program.  It was also important to me to visit the school to check it out to see if it was a good fit.

PBR: Do you feel relieved now that the process is over and you can just focus on baseball and not dealing with everything that goes into picking a school?

Bailey: Yes I do feel relieved, but that doesn’t mean I can just sit around now. I still need to put in work and grind to get better so that I can be ready to compete and contribute at UTA.

PBR: Was there one deciding factor that put your choice over the top?

Bailey: Not one single thing.  I felt UTA was a perfect fit with baseball, campus life, and academics.. All this helped me realize that UTA is the place where I believe I can be successful on and off the field.

PBR: Who helped the most to get to where you are today?

Bailey: My parents and coaches. My parents are always supporting me with baseball and always provided for me so I had the opportunity to play. Coach Bryan Rice with the Arizona Sandlot 2021 has helped a lot with getting exposure and opportunities to succeed.  Same goes for College Athlete Advantage. They were a huge help.

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? Easy or difficult?

Bailey: I thought that it may be easy, but quickly realized that a lot goes into it.  I realized that I had to identify what was important to me if I was going to pick a school that was a good fit.  I wanted to look at a lot of options, and did.

PBR: What plans does the coaching staff have in store for your freshman season?

Bailey: I am focusing on getting better and being prepared for UTA.  I want to contribute in earning a starting role or to be a key guy in the bullpen. I want to help UTA win games.  Go Mavs!

PBR: What is your most memorable moment to date?

Bailey: My most memorable moment was pitching a one-hit shut-out of the Canes National team in the Championship Game  in Florida. We won the custom gloves.

PBR: Who is the best player you have played against?

Bailey: As a Freshman I had the opportunity to be the teammate of Matthew Liberatore.   I also had the opportunity to pitch to Nolan Gorman, took me deep at GCU.
