DFW Top Prospects: Quick Hits (Part 1)

Toby Bicknell
Texas Scouting Director

PLANO, TX - Monday was all about starts, and the start of the event began with Beau Windebank running a 6.64 60 right out of the shoot. That carried over into BP where a group of left-handed hitters caught everyone’s attention as they hammered balls around the yard. All that being said, the talent at the event was too much to cram into just one writeup, so we are going to break this up over the next couple of days. Today we start with left-handed hitters.

We have been tracking CF Elijah Nunez (Arlington Martin HS) since he last summer when he popped up at the North Texas Underclass Trials. The TCU commit has smooth, fast twitch athleticism to go with a left-handed swing that has really come into his own in the past 10 months. Gap power with a balanced approach and high end feel for the barrel. He ran a 6.64 60-yard dash and he is likely going to get a lot of attention from Major League teams in the 2020 Draft.

RHP/OF Mitchell Szczygiel (Frisco Centennial) has an lean-athletic frame with quick-strong hands. At 6-foot-1, 175-pounds, there is still room to add strength moving forward but the swing plays. He was 84-86 on the mound, but his round of BP stood out so much that I would put the bat at the top of his tool set right now.

OF Matt Scannell (St. Mary’s Hall) posted an 89 mph exit velocity and the ball jumps off his bat with simple strength as he throws the head with natural lift and gap power, including one home run during BP. His arm works easy in the outfield and I could see him fitting in nicely as a corner outfielder that eventually hits in the middle of the order.

1B Cole Kracmer (South Grand Prairie) stands 6-foot-3, 195-pounds, looking the part of projectable left-handed bat with strength and power (94 mph).

OF Tyler Harris (Celina) is a quick twitch left-handed hitter standing 5-foot-11, 160-pounds. He started the day with a 6.82 60-yard dash and showed a balanced swing with line drive power through the middle of the field.

3B/OF Jack Pruitt (Reedy) is already physically strong at 6-foot-1, 190-pounds, and has some serious juice in the bat, posting a top exit velocity on the field of 89 mph.

1B Collin Adams (Arlington Martin) roped balls around the yard with hard contact including a home run and he posted a top exit velocity of 92 mph.

3B Cade Manning (Southlake Carroll) was a huge piece to the Southlake Carroll State Championship run this season, hitting in the four hole. The left-handed hitter has high end feel for the barrel with a balanced swing and inside out path. On Monday, he showed why he is one of the top uncommitted infielders in the 20 class flashing pull side pop and gap power during BP. Soft hands at third base with ability to make the play on the run. With his arm strength (86) and actions I could see him sticking at third base long term and but he is athletic enough to play in the middle.

OF Ben Dukes (Houston Memorial) is an athletic left-handed bat that does everything well. After running a 7.0 60-yard dash, he laced balls from gap to gap with quick-strong hands and an easy weight transfer that projects for more pop in the future.

1B/LHP Drew Durst (Frisco Memorial) is super-projectable at 6-foot-6, 215-pounds. The SFA commit ran a 7.09 60-yard dash and topped out at 85 on the mound.

OF Sam Hunt (Marcus HS) looks like he has been spending some time in the weight room adding lean-muscle mass. Hunt ran a 6.66 60-yard dash and threw 90 mph from the outfield. The left-handed hitter was an every day guy in the Marcus lineup this season.

OF Kaleb Thompson (Mount Pleasant) has a strong top hand and finishes the barrel with authority, he did a great job of hitting head high line drives through the middle of the field.

C Jimmy Hutson (Prosper) has a strong, durable frame at 6-foot, 205. He threw 80 mph from the crouch with a 2.01 pop time and posted a 91 mph exit velocity.
