Games from March 20

The Chicago Blackhawks opened up the NHL season with 24 consecutive games without a loss. We at the Prep Baseball Report have opened up the 2013 season with an unprecedented 10 consecutive days without a game covered. After a record-setting 2012 campaign in games covered by the PBR, jump-started by the warmest March in Chicago weather history, we at the PBR will have a challenge to exceed our game coverage from 2012. You can make it Day No. 11, as the Thursday morning temperature sits at 13 degrees with a fresh dusting of snow. So much for global warming.

Nonconference

Shawnee 8, Anna-Jonesboro 1
Shawnee (3-0) ace Adam Pennington (2-0) fired a no-hitter at Anna-Jonesboro (0-2) on Wednesday, leading the Redskins to an 8-1 victory. The no-no was just half the story for Pennington. Of the 21 outs recorded by Pennington, 20 were by strikeout. Redskin Alden McMahon singled and homered to lead the Shawnee attack.

No. 31 Alton 13, Cahokia 3 (5 innings)
Alton (4-0) won its fourth consecutive game on Wednesday, crushing Cahokia 13-3 in five innings. The Redbirds broke up a 2-2 tie with a big seven-run outburst in the bottom of the second. Senior CF Ron Wisnasky had a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate, with a double, four runs scored and an RBI. Indiana-bound C Brent Gibbs had two hits including a triple with two RBI. Junior SS Matt Halliday, senior 1B Nick Droste and senior RF Dylan Rios all plated a pair of Redbird runs. 6-foot-7 sophomore LHP Bryan Hudson (1-0) picked up the win on the mound for Alton.

Waterloo 11, Mount Vernon 2
Mount Vernon (3-1) appeared to be cruising toward its fourth consecutive victory in Mount Vernon on Wednesday. Ram ace, junior Brock Fulkerson (1-1), was on cruise control as the Rams led 2-1 over Waterloo, as the game went to the top of the sixth. Fulkerson didn’t make it out of the sixth, as the Bulldogs exploded for five runs to grab a 6-2 lead. The ‘Dogs roughed up the Ram bullpen for five more runs in the seventh and went on to a resounding 11-2 victory.

Waterloo (1-0) junior 2B Zach Schaab was a round-tripper short of hitting for the cycle with three hits and an RBI to lead the Bulldog attack. Junior Nathan Goodsell had a double and a pair of RBI. Junior Jake Mathenia also had 2 RBI.

Du Quoin 3, Goreville 2
Du Quoin (3-1) sophomore RHP A.J. Smith allowed two hits and one earned run in his 6 1/3 innings of work on Wednesday. Smith struck out 12 to improve to 3-0 on the campaign. Senior RHP Brendan Fred nailed down the save.

Five Goreville (0-1-1) errors gave the Indians all they would need to record a 3-2 win. The Indians scored two of their runs on wild pitches and picked up the game-winner on one of the five Goreville miscues.
