4A Top 25

No. 1 Cathedral 12 Chatard 1 - Cathedral opened up the 2014 season with a run rule win to move to 1-0 on the year. 

3A No. 4 Hanover Central 9 No. 12 Portage 2 – Daniel Balich got the win throwing five innings allowing one earned run, five hits, and striking out three. Riley Welch threw the final two shutout innings allowing just one hit and striking out two. At the plate Welch was 2-3 with a RBI and a run scored. Jesse Wilkening led the offense going 2-4 with a double, three RBI, and a run scored. Michael Craig and Luis Pinto each drove in a run and scored once. 

Elkhart Central 5 No. 25 Concord 2 – Andrew Salmon went six innings allowing just two runs to give the defending State Champs a win to start their 2014 season. 

3A Top 10

No. 4 Hanover Central 9 4A No. 12 Portage 2 – Daniel Balich got the win throwing five innings allowing one earned run, five hits, and striking out three. Riley Welch threw the final two shutout innings allowing just one hit and striking out two. At the plate Welch was 2-3 with a RBI and a run scored. Jesse Wilkening led the offense going 2-4 with a double, three RBI, and a run scored. Michael Craig and Luis Pinto each drove in a run and scored once. 

No. 6 Silver Creek 7 Henryville 1 – Logan Murphy got the win throwing two shutout innings, striking out four and not allowing a hit. Cameron Cook picked up the save throwing the final two innings allowing one hit and striking out four. Zac Spaulding doubled and drove in two runs, Brahm Whittinghill was 1-3 with a RBI and a run scored, and Shae Durham was 1-3 with a RBI. 

2A/1A Top 10

No. 1 South Spencer 10 Daviess County 3 – Ryan Wilkinson led the offense going 2-5 with two doubles and five RBI. Nathan Kuester was 3-4 with three RBI and three runs scored and Tyler Schneider was 304 with two doubles, a RBI, and three runs scored. Schneider also got the win on the mound throwing 3.1 innings in relief allowing no runs, two hits, and striking out four.  Malin Webb threw 3.2 innings allowing one earned and struck out four.

Hamilton Heights 4 No. 9 Lapel 3 F/8 – Aaron House picked up the win throwing the last three innings allowing just one run on four hits and striking out two. Braden Warner threw the first five innings allowing two runs on five hits. Brady Spencer led the offense going 3-4 with three runs scored. Sam Reel was 2-4 with a RBI. House and Sipe both had a hit and drove in a run. 

More Highlights

Boone Grove 11 Merrillville 1 – Chuck Kidd threw all six innings allowing one unearned run, two hits, and striking out four. Dan Gholston led the offense going 2-4 with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored. Kidd and Jake Gholston each went 2-4 with a RBI and two runs scored. Darrell Maxey and Robert Blauner each had a hit and drove in two runs. 

Frankton 4 Marion 0 F/9 – Frankton scored four in the top of the ninth to get their first win of the year. Logan Weins threw six innings allowing just two hits and striking out 11. Bryce Mallernee got the win throwing the final three innings allowing two hits. 

Hamilton Heights 4 No. 9 Lapel 3 F/8 – Aaron House picked up the win throwing the last three innings allowing just one run on four hits and striking out two. Braden Warner threw the first five innings allowing two runs on five hits. Brady Spencer led the offense going 3-4 with three runs scored. Sam Reel was 2-4 with a RBI. House and Sipe both had a hit and drove in a run. 

Hammond Morton 15 East Chicago Central 0 – Cody Earl threw four shutout innings allowing just one hit and striking out six to get the win. At the plate he was 2-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. Andres was 2-2 with two RBI and two runs scored, Davonte Robinson drove in three and scored three times, and Alex Tomaszewski and Morris each had a hit and drove in two.

Marquette Catholic 15 LaCrosse 7 – Isaiah Papineau led the offense going 3-4 with a RBI and three runs scored. Steven Stachyra was 2-3 with a RBI and two runs scored, Carter Moldenhauer was 1-2 with two RBI and a run scored, and Will Connelly was 1-3 with a RBI and three runs scored.  Bryce Freels got the win throwing four innings allowing three runs, one hit, and striking out seven.

Northwood 5 Mishawaka 4 – Tanner Cleveland got the win throwing all seven innings allowing three earned runs and striking out five. Offensively he drove in a run and scored once. Tanner Farmwald doubled, drove in a run, and scored once. Kyle McCoy also had a RBI and a run scored. 

Wheeler 5 South Central 4 – Matt Pappas was 3-3 with a double, RBI, and a run scored and Austin Whitaker was 2-3 with a triple and two RBI to lead the offense. Danny Bogs was 2-3 with two runs scored and Sam Bolla was 1-3 with a RBI and a run scored. Whitaker got the win throwing 5.2 innings allowing three earned runs on six hits and striking out four. Jake LaFever got the save throwing the final 1.1 innings allowing no hits and striking out two.
