2019 Canadian Spring Training - Day 5

Day 5 is in the books at the 2019 Canadian Spring Training. Here are a number of guys that caught our eye throughout the day.

Noah Garrah RHP / 1B / Mother Teresa Catholic, ON / 2022

Report: 2022 right-hander for the Ontario Nationals, Noah Garrah, was pivotal in his teams comeback as he secured the win for the Nats out of the bullpen, going three innings allowing just one run against the Mississauga Tigers. He was throwing strikes and getting lots of ground balls with the lone run he allowed coming on a groundout. Garrah has a stocky frame, standing at 5-foot-11, 200-pounds and works from a ¾  arm slot with a long stride towards the plate. While he mixes in a curveball, the development of his offspeed stuff over the next few years will be key to his progression.

Kenny Di Clemente OF / 3B / St. Thomas aquinas , ON / 2019

Report: Di Clemente, a 2019 Crowder College commit, was solid on both sides of the ball tonight for the Fieldhouse Pirates, reaching base four times with two extra-base hits. He had a good approach at the plate all game long, taking close pitches and taking advantage of the ones over the plate. He also showed the ability to hit to all fields with an opposite field triple. Di Clemente showed some range and athleticism at third, making a beautiful play coming in on a slow chopper and throwing on the run to get the runner at first.

Lucas Bateman C / 3B / Waterloo Collegiate Institute , ON / 2021

Report: Bateman was a workhorse behind the dish for the Tri City Giants on Day Five, blocking several balls throughout the game with a runner at third base. Beyond the blocks, he caught a tough pop up behind the plate and showed off his arm throwing in behind a runner at first to get the out. Bateman has displayed some power in his swing this week and the stocky uncommitted 2020 catcher who isn’t known for his speed, impressed with his jumps off first, stealing two bases on the night.

Nick LOSTRACCO RHP / St. James, ON / 2019

Report: LoStracco, an uncommitted 2019 right-hander for the Nationals 18U’s, was sitting 83-85 with his fastball today, topping out at 86. He was on top of his game, being his second appearance and held his velocity for the majority of his outing. The breaking ball showed 11/5 shape and he was able to get swings and misses with this pitch. Lostracco opened eyes this week, and there is more room for him to grow as we head into the season.

Cole Tucker 2B / 2B / St. Andre Bessette Catholic, ON / 2020

Report: Tucker, a 5-foot-10, 145-pound infielder impressed at the dish against TNXL. Tucker displayed bat-to-ball ability with sound mechanics staying inside the ball on a breaker and picking it out of the dirt for a single. Tucker shows decent actions in the infield, and with strength gains, we could see Tucker being a useful piece for a club on both ends.

Hayden Zweig RHP / OF / Oakville Trafalger , ON / 2020

Report: Zweig, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound arm pitched a couple of innings in the nightcap and was solid against strong competition. The right-hander sat 77-80 mph with breaking stuff hovering in the 70 mph range. It was Zweig’s secondary offerings which allowed him to be successful on Thursday night. His curveball had 11/5 break and was a good pitch for him, and his changeup demonstrated fading action in on right-handers. Zweig is an arm to keep an eye on out of the Fieldhouse Pirates organization.

Bill Reaume 3B / RHP / Nelson, ON / 2021

Report: Reaume’s bases-clearing triple was one of the biggest hits of the day, and it gave the Fieldhouse Pirates a commanding lead early. The 2021 corner infielder had a simple approach vs a hard-throwing right-hander and was rewarded smacking a line-drive through the left-side of second-base. Reaume’s size with strength play at a corner, and with improved athleticism, Reaume could contribute for the right school at the next level.

Tyrese Bentola OF / RHP / Centennial, ON / 2021

Report: Bentola has been playing his top ball all week long, and on day 5 his bat was the bright spot in his play. Bentola stepped up to the dish in the middle innings and took a fastball in the mid-’80s and smacked a fly ball over the center fielders head for a triple. With bat speed and some strength, Bentola has proven that he can hold his own against quality opponents and some. The Tri-City Giants product is just a 2021 grad and has the makings of being a solid player on both ends of the field.

Campbell Lyons RHP / All Saints Catholic, ON / 2020

Report: Lyons got his second start of the week and worked three innings, giving up 1 run while he worked in the 80-82 range, topping out at 83 mph. The arm is loose from a ¾ slot and the delivery has tempo and rhythm. Lyons showed a near 12/6 curveball that he was able to get swings and misses with, and was aggressive in the zone. A 2020 who has made strides over the off-season and looks to be one of the better arms on the Toronto Mets 17u staff.

Tanner Almond OF / LHP / Georgian Bay Community School, ON / 2021

Report: Almond passes the eye test as he has an athletic 6-foot-2 frame with room to add strength. It’s a left on left centre fielder with good reads and first step defensively. At the plate, its an advanced setup, upright stance and while he can get long at times, he attacks pitches and works inside the ball, using the big part of the field. A very intriguing 2021, Almond is a definite follow and look forward to seeing him outside back home.

Nicholas Styles 3B / OF / Stayner Collegiate Institute, ON / 2019

Report: Styles was out senior steal early on in the week, and his performance today only verified that statement as he laced a triple into the left-centre gap and turned on a fastball down first base line. The left-handed hitter has bat to ball skills and feel in the box that allows him to use his hands and get to contact quickly. An uncommitted 2019, Styles profiles as a utility player who can move baseballs, work to the back side and contribute defensively with his versatility.

Jacob Douglas C / 1B / St.Marys , ON / 2019

Report: A household name this week, Douglas continued his trend of punishing baseballs as he had two more doubles and 4 RBI’s in his two games today. Each double was loud as he drove both into the left-centre gap, one being a bases clearing double that was a big moment in the game. Douglas is country strong with long arms and when he gets extended and is balanced, the ball jumps off his bat, as we;ve seen over the last 5 days.
