Deep Run Spring Break Tournament: Day 1

This week PBR Virginia/DC will be covering the Deep Run Spring Break Tournament. This tournament features multiple programs from the Richmond area.  Below are the Day 1 recaps.

Lee-Davis 18, Caroline 7

Lee-Davis went down 5-0 in the 1st, but used an eight run burst in the second and a seven run 3rd to break the game open. Lee-Davis went on to win by a score of 18-7 and will face St. Christopher’s School on Day 2.

Junior ODU commit Carter Trice was 2-3 with two runs scored and a double for Lee-Davis.

Junior Cole Jenkins was 3-3 with three RBI and three runs scored and Jalen Strattman was 2-2 with two doubles, two runs scored, and two RBI for the Confederates.

Freshman Dallas Hairfield threw two and two-thirds for Lee-Davis striking out four in the process and picked up the win.

St. Christopher’s School 10, Matoaca 6 (9 innings)

Matoaca jumped out to a 5-1 lead after two innings, but St. Chris would battle back and tie it up with two in the 7th to make it 6-6. St. Chris would go on to score four in the top of the 9th and win this one 10-6. The Saints will take on Lee-Davis on Day two and Matoaca will battle Caroline in the first game of the day.

The Saints’ offense was paced by Griffin O’Farrell who was 3-6 on the day with a couple of big at bats and scored two runs in the process.

St. Christopher’s senior Damone’ Fleming had a huge day for the Saints going 3-5 with six RBI and a double.

St. Chris senior Charlie Vozenilek came in and threw an immaculate seven innings. He scattered eight hits and gave up one earned run. Over those seven innings he struck out ten and only walked one.

Ethan Everhart scored two runs for Matoaca and Bobby Johnson was 1-4 with two RBI on the day.

No. 1 Benedictine 16, Monacan 1

Benedictine had senior Alex Markus on the mound and he would hold Monacan down and allow Benedictine’s high octane offense to pull away with a seven run 6th. Benedictine will play host Deep Run in the nightcap on Day 2 and Monacan will face Midlothian in the 1 pm game.

Benedictine was led offensively by the offensive contingent of Jamari Baylor, Brett Cook, Jay Woolfolk, and Jack Hall.

Baylor was 2-for-2 with three runs scored. Cook was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Woolfolk was 1-2 with a double and three runs scored. Lastly, junior Jack Hall was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

Alex Markus threw four strong innings while giving up only one run on one hit and struck out eight along the way.

Monacan was led offensively by freshman Jaden Greenidge who was an impressive 2-for-2 with a double and a triple on the day. Greenidge also scored two runs along the way.


No. 9 Deep Run 7, No. 22 Midlothian 1

After a closely contested game most of the way, Deep Run would score five in the bottom of the sixth to break it open at 7-1. Midlothian will face Monacan at 1 pm on day 2 and Deep Run will take on Benedictine in the nightcap and it should be a good one.

The story of the day for Deep Run was the relief performance by junior Ryan Carroll. Carroll came on in the second and threw five and one-third innings giving up no runs on one hit and struck out eleven in the process.

Deep Run’s offense was led by senior Eli Weisner who was 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBI.

Camdton Furman also had a nice night for Midlothian as he battled through some tough spots for five and two-thirds only giving up two hits and three earned runs.
