Delaware Preseason ID: Infield Analysis

The Delaware Preseason ID took place on Saturday, February 27. Over 30 players from across Maryland and Delaware were in attendance showcasing their talent in front of the PBR Maryland staff.

Over the course of the next week we will be releasing the positional analysis articles with detailed scouting reports on each player in attendance. We shall also identify top performers in each positional category along with a younger talent (2018 and younger) as a Future Watch if applicable.

Today we take a look at the infielders that participated in the event. this areas covers second base, shortstop, and third basemen. A talented pool with many players deserving of Top Performer recognition.

TOP PERFORMERS

Jared Gillis 3B Smyrna (DE) 2016
Athletic frame at 6-foot, 186-pounds. Hits from an athletic, slightly open set up. Smooth load with rhythm and knee turn. Nice balance throughout swing. Short path to the ball with extension and explosive bat speed. Pop at the plate and power potential. Works gap-to-gap well. Nice rhythm throughout swing. Exit velocity of 98 mph and ran a 4.44 home to first. Active feet at third base. Soft hands and clean exchange. Short arm action throwing from a high ¾ arm slot. Works thru the ball well and throws have carry at 83 mph.

Jimmy Adkins SS Delmar (DE) 2017
Compact frame at 5-foot-9, 150-pounds. Home to first time of 4.43. Hits from a tall slightly open set up. Smooth load to hitting position. Short swing path to the baseball with quick hands and some bat speed. Shows balance throughout swing. Exit velocity of 83 mph. Sound actions from the infield. Active feet and works thru the ball well. Short quick arm action with throws across the infield at 83 mph.

FUTURE WATCH

Zion Bannister SS/RHP West Nottingham Academy 2019
Projectable athletic frame at 6-foot, 145-pounds. Ran 4.45 home to first.  Hits from an athletic set up at the plate. Short load back with level swing path from the left side. Similar load right handed, with shorter swing path. Quicker hands from left side. Good balance from both side and has some rhythm in swing. Exit velocity of 71 mph from the right side. Active feet with soft hands in the infield. Throws from a high ¾ arm slot across the infield at 70 mph.

Nathen Ridgeway 2B Smyrna (DE) 2018
Solid frame with room to grow at 5-foot-7, 130-pounds. Hits from an athletic balanced setup. Smooth load with some rhythm in swing and leg kick. Short path to the baseball and stays inside well. Slap style hitter right now with gap-to-gap-potential as he gets stronger. Shows balance throughout.  Interesting foundation as a hitter, and should make jump as he gets stronger and adds to frame. Exit velocity of 70 mph. Active feet from the infield. Clean hands and sound exchange with loose arm action throwing from a high ¾ arm angle. Quick arm with velocity of 76 mph. Interesting to monitor development as he gets stronger.

Ben Scott 3B Delmar (DE) 2017
Solid frame at 6-foot, 190-pounds. Hits from a wider, athletic set up with high hands.  Short load and small leg kick to hitting position. Some balance in swing. Slightly uphill path to the baseball. Gets lower half involved with pull side power potential. Exit velocity of 79 mph. Active feet in the infield.  Sound hands and exchange. Loose arm action throwing from a high ¾ arm angle. Could keep feet working through the ball. Infield velocity of 73 mph.

Andrew Unterreiner 3B Smyrna (DE) 2019
Projectable frame at 6-foot, 175-pounds. Hits from a balanced set up. Short load to hitting position. Uphill swing path with average bat speed. Power potential as he gets older. Gets some lower half, and could get more hip explosion. Exit velocity of 76 mph. Sound hands and footwork from third base. Short arm action getting rid of the baseball. Infield velocity of 71 mph. Shows some raw ability. Interesting to see how develops down the road.

Terren Yanero 3B Dover (DE) 2016
Athletic frame at 5-foot-10, 190-pounds. Hits from an open setup. Short load to square hitting psotion with knee turn. Level swing path with some bat speed. Middle type hitter with some power to pull side. Gets lower half involved. Exit velocity of 81 mph. Active feet in the infield. Works thru the ball well. Clean transfer to long arm action throwing from a ¾ arm angle. Throws across the infield at 75 mph.
