East Coast Prospect Showcase: The Infielders

Michigan Director of Scouting

1. Jordan Swiss, INF/RHP, Petoskey HS, 2015
We have seen Swiss three times over the past two months and he is certainly growing on us.  The 6-foot-2 Swiss is more physical than we first thought.  He has a good motor.  In the infield he moved well and showed good hands. He also has an above-average arm across the diamond at 83mph.  He does wind up to get rid of it. At the plate he won’t get cheated.  Swiss takes a big hack but is rewarded with good pop.  He was one of the best runners at the event as well clocking in a 6.82.  On the mound he has a quick arm and did a nice job of keeping the ball down. Fastball ranged between 81-83mph. High follow.

2. Drew Devine, INF, Marshall HS, 2016
Devine may be on the smaller side (5-foot-10, 140-pounds) currently but he can play.  Devine has above-average actions in the infield.  He made several nice plays ranging to both sides, including a diving play up the middle.  He seems to have natural instincts in the middle. At the plate he shows an advanced approach with a little swagger.  He generates good bat speed for his current size.  Definitely a high follow.

3. Carlton Mukasa-Clark, MIF/RHP, Portage Northern HS, 2015
Good showing from this junior middle infielder.  Good frame to work with 6-foot-1, 160-pounds.  80+ across the diamond. 7.27 runner. Longer arm action in the infield.  Accurate throws across the diamond.  Soft hands and quick feet. Natural quick instincts.  Moved well laterally and played through the ball well.  Late bloomer.  At the plate has fast hands and high finish.  Developing his power potential.  Expect him to make a big jump over the next year.  On the mound has an extremely quick arm.  Velocity is sure to come.  78-80mph.  Long, long legs. Still a thrower at this point but arm works well. Follow.

4. Nicholas Jones, C/INF, Battle Creek Lakeview, 2016
This was the first we had heard of Jones and he won’t be under the radar for long.  He has a good foundation.  In the infield he showed good hands and a good arm across the diamond (78mph).  Throws were accurate an online. Behind the dish he thre pop times between 2.02-2.10 and blocked the ball well during the bullpen sessions.  At the plate he showed a balanced athletic stance coupled with a fast bat.  He certainly should hit for power down the road.  He currently has occasional gap pop.

5. Zac Capaldi, 3B/RHP, Anchor Bay HS, 2016
Bigger-bodied sophomore with strong lower half.  6-foot-1, 215-pounds.  7.47 runner currently should get faster.  Offensively-minded.  Closed stance.  Hands worked well. Has some pop with a fast bat.  Got to extension well.  Nice arm in the infield. Projects as a 3B.  On the mound has a clue how to pitch.  78-80mph.  Got under breaking ball causing it to be a sweeping breaking ball.  Above average feel for changeup at this point.  Smooth delivery. Follow.

Liked him at the plate.  Quick hands with short patch. Smooth load.  Expect him to get a lot stronger and only get better.  Want to see how he progresses. 7.23 runner.
