The Florida Dodgers Scout Team held their tryouts on August 31st at St. Johns Country Day in Orange Park, FL. Prospects from the Class of 2021 through Class of 2025 participated in a pro-style workout. PBR Florida was on-hand to cover the event and collect statistics. Today, we present to you standout prospects from the tryouts.

Standouts

Jordan Taylor, OF/RHP, St. Johns Country Day, 2022
Florida State commit. 6-foot-2, 175-pound right-handed outfielder and right-handed pitcher, long, athletic frame, continues to grow into frame with added muscle. An elite athlete, shows in everything he does. Ran a 6.88 60 yard dash. Defensively, already trending towards having an elite arm in the class, 89 from the outfield on the day, arm works loose and continuous to a high ¾ slot, accurate on throws. Fields his position with athleticism, plays through the ball with light, fluid footwork. Offensively, starting to find his own, gap-to-gap type of approach, barrel works level as he drives the ball with ease, with more consistency has the chance to be a power threat. Did not pitch on the day, but given arm strength from the outfield, is a legitimate two-way prospect.

Connor Moore, SS, St. Johns Country Day, 2021
Florida State commit. 6-foot, 165-pounds, right-handed hitting middle infielder, athletic build, emerging strength throughout frame. Ran a 6.98 60. Defensively stood out for his easy actions. Fluid from side-to-side, attacks the ball with confidence and athletically, good body control, clean on transfers. Arm works from multiple slot with plenty of strength, showed the ability to flick the ball in the low-80s accurately and then dialed it up one throw, touching 90 across the diamond. Offensively, has continued a steady upward progression, fluidity in swing, whips the barrel through the zone with little effort, put a charge in nearly every ball he made contact with, including some far hit balls to the pull-side.

Bradley Hodges, OF/LHP, St. Johns Country Day, 2022
Committed to Virginia shortly following his standout performance for Team Florida at the 2019 PBR Future Games. 6-foot, 160-pound proportional build, athletic frame. Offensively, takes a gap-to-gap approach, barrel works level through the zone as he drives the ball with easy effort from the left-side. Defensively, showed clean actions, plays through the ball. Short, loose arm action, good feel, accurate on throws, 83 from the outfield. Ran a 7.37 60. Still physically maturing, room to add in almost every facet of his game, trending upwards.

Kade Frew, SS/2B, Bolles School, 2022
5-foot-8, 160-pound middle infielder, strong, athletic build, highly athletic, displayed top flight speed as he ran the best 60 on the day, coming in at 6.50 seconds. Offensively, keeps it simple in his pre-pitch routine, balanced setup, early toe-tap stride, hands load back smoothly. Still finding consistency in swing, barrel path varies between level and uphill, flashed the ability to drive the ball with a more uphill swing path, looks to make square contact back up the middle. Speed is his biggest strength, even with mishits, gives him a chance on every ball on the ground. Defensively, fields position athletically, 76 across the infield.

Finn Howell, SS/2B, St. Johns Country Day, 2022
North Florida commit. 6-foot, 160-pound athletically built, long frame, right-handed hitting middle infielder. An advanced defender, fields the middle athletically with fluid actions, arm works short and clean, accurate across the infield at 83 mph. Offensively, balanced setup, knee-knock stride, drops hands and extends back on load. Swing works level and aggressively through the zone, quick hands, flashed the ability to create loft to the pull-side and showed some pop.

Camden Gay, C, West Orange (Homeschool), 2021
5-foot-11, 170-pound right-handed hitting catcher, durable frame, strong lower half. Stood out defensively for his catch and throw skills, posted the best pop time of the day at 2.00, ranged 2.00-2.10. Arm worked short and loose, accurate, kept throws on or around the bag at 75 mph. Offensively, balanced setup with an athletic bend in his knees, short stride, hands load back smoothly, stays balanced throughout. Gap-to-gap approach, at-times drove the ball with ease back up the middle, can get inconsistent with barrel path, leading to high fly balls. Defensive skill set ahead of offensive, with more consistency can be a threat at the plate. Ran a 7.48 60 yard dash.

Junior Smith, MIF, Oakleaf, 2021
5-foot-11, 160-pound right-handed hitting middle infielder, lean, athletic frame. Had one of the better all around days, posting high numbers, 60 - 7.06 seconds, 78 across the infield, and topped out at 81 on the mound. Offensively, balanced setup, reverse toe-tap stride, high hands load back smoothly, remains balanced throughout. Swings it aggressively through the zone with quick hand speed, generates hard line drive contact, can generate some loft to the pull-side with developing power. Defensively, moves well on the infield, plays with soft hands and good body control.

Nathan Webb, UTL, Mandarin, 2022
6-foot, 180-pound, right-handed hitting utility player, worked out in the outfield and infield, at catcher and on the mound, proportional build with strength throughout. Defensively, showed clean actions with a short arm action from an over-the-top slot, 80 mph from the outfield, 73 across the infield. Behind the dish, traditional catcher’s actions, plays through the ball, kept throws around the bag at 71, pop time ranged 2.04-2.12. On the mound, effectively uses a three-pitch mix, feel for entire arsenal. Fastball sat 76-78, touched 81, armside run action. Curveball, 11/5 shape, 61-64. Changeup, located low in the zone, 71-72. Offensively, balanced setup, short stride, transitions weight and hands back on load, finishes balanced. Takes a middle/pull approach, still finding consistency in swing, profiles as a gap-to-gap type hitter. Ran a 7.68 60 yard dash. Presently, his skillset at catcher is ahead of the others.

Noah Couch, OF, Trinity Christian Academy, 2022
5-foot-10, 165-pound right-handed hitting outfielder, lean, athletic frame. Ran a 7.03 60 yard dash. Defensively, arm works loose and easy from a high ¾ slot, 79 mph from the outfield. Offensively, balanced setup, short stride, hands drop on load, good balance. Line drive hitter, short barrel path through the zone, keeps hands inside, peppered middle/pull during BP, squaring it up routinely.

Jack Gidcumb, C, Fleming Island, 2021
6-foot-4, 180-pound left-handed hitting catcher, long frame, plenty of room to add physicality. Defensively, uses his large frame well behind the dish, flexible in lower half, fluid footwork. Does a good job keeping his long appendages short, traditional catcher's arm actions short and near over-the-top slot, 77 mph out of the crouch, pop times ranged 2.08-2.19. Offensively, hits behind the ball, takes a middle approach, mostly line drive contact, with more loft in swing can be a long ball threat given overall length and strength in frame.

Mason Davis, C/OF, St. Johns Country Day, 2021
6-foot, 160-pound right-handed hitting outfielder and catcher, lean frame. Offensively, narrow setup, long stride, hand load back with some wrap of the barrel, good balance. Ran a 7.41 60 yard dash.

CJ Crawford, 3B/2B, Trinity Christian Academy, 2022

Liam O’Neil, 1B/3B, Episcopal, 2023
6-foot-3, 220-pound left-handed hitting corner infielder, strong, stocky frame, powerful build. Offensively, balanced setup, heel lift stride, hands load back smoothly, gets separation. Power hitter, barrel works uphill through the zone, creates natural loft, hit some of the furthest balls on the day, can get too uphill at-times, leading to some towering fly balls, when on-time is a threat to the pull-side every at-bat.

Shawn Andrade, SS, St. Johns Country Day, 2023
5-foot-10, 140-pound right-handed hitting middle infielder, lean, athletic frame, projectable build.
