On Oct. 17, 2021 Prep Baseball Report Arizona hosted the Fall Upperclass Showcase at Grand Canyon University. The Fall Underclass Showcase is an annual open showcase accessible to the high school players in the Phoenix area, granting players the opportunity to be evaluated by the PBR Arizona staff while their tools were analyzed by state-of-the-art technologies on-site. 

With some talented players in attendance, there were some standout performances. Along with the standout performances, there were some standout bodies and players with much project-ability. Of the pitchers in attendance, RHP Collin Riff showed he's got some big upside with a 6-foot-6 frame and a fast arm. RHP Santiago DiBene, showed some pitch-ability and a frame that still has some maturing to do. RHP Ryan Weller, showed some impressive spin numbers with the FB and SL. And RHP Deegan Cordova showed his athleticism on the mound with a good FB.

Pitcher's Scouting Reports

Demario Faison, Estrella Foothills (AZ), 2023
Positional Profile: OF/RHP Interesting follow, added size and strength could do a lot for his development. Good athlete and a strike thrower on the mound.
Body: 5-foot-10, 145-pounds. Athletic build, good frame. Room for physical development.
Delivery: Good athlete on the mound. Controlled windup with clean mechanic and good posture. Commanded the zone with 3 pitches on this day. Will keep hitters off balance with strike throwing ability of 3 pitches.
Arm Action: RH. Throws from a high 3/4 slot with an easy arm action.
FB: T80.32, 77.93-80.17 mph. FB stays pretty true and is commanded well. Seems to be more comfortable to the arm side with the FB.  T2054, 1975 average rpm.
SL: 67.51-68.54 mph. Has some downward break to it. Commanded well, thrown for strikes. Good pitch to keep hitters off balance. T2031, 1999 average rpm.
CH: 71.41-72.89 mph. CH showed to be a good option on this day. More of a straight change commanded well down in the zone, misses were off the plate where damage can't be done.  T1606, 1494 average rpm.

Jerry Coyle, Salpointe Catholic (AZ), 2023
Positional Profile: 2B/RHP
Body: 5-foot-9, 150-pounds. Athletic body.
Delivery: Throwing majority from the stretch, has a slower leg lift and as he gets down the mound the front side opens slightly early. Would benefit from staying closed down the mound longer.
Arm Action: RH. Throws from a high 3/4 slot, almost a pushy arm action due to front side flying.
FB: T73.15, 70.72-72.53 mph. Struggled to find a consistent release point on this day. Was lacking command with the FB, stays pretty true.  T1795, 1738 average rpm.
SL: 59.95-61.85 mph. Misses armside and high with the SL due to front side flying open and arm lagging. Has a good shape to it if he can command it.  T1711, 1671 average rpm.
CH: 68.23-69.86 mph. Does a better job getting down the mound with the SPL. Gets better extension out front, misses were down. Showed to be best off speed option.  T1244, 1133 average rpm.

Jackson Nealy, Perry (AZ), 2022
Positional Profile: RHP/OF
Body: 5-foot-10, 150-pounds.
Delivery: Stands tall in his delivery. Uses a lot of arm, could benefit from more lower half involvement.
Arm Action: RH. Has a shorter arm action, delivers from a 3/4 slot.
FB: T73.08, 69.01-72.62 mph. FB stays true and was thrown majority glove side. Pulls the FB at times.  T2030, 1892 average rpm.
SL: 61.85-63.46 mph. Struggled to command SL on this day. Inconsistent with his release point.  T2140, 2042 average rpm.
CH: 66.96-68.74 mph. Showed to be best and most consistent pitch on this day. Straight CH commanded down in the zone consistently. Only plays a few mph off the FB.  T1624, 1530 average rpm.
 

Collin Cartee, Deer Valley (AZ), 2022
Positional Profile: RHP
Body: 6-foot-0, 155-pounds.
Delivery: Has an athletic delivery out of the windup. Stays tight with his mechanics and works quick.
Arm Action: RH. Throws from a high 3/4 slot with good arm speed on all pitches.
FB: T80.65, 76.70-80.65 mph. FB stays pretty true. Misses are pulled glove side and down. Best FB there's a noticeable difference with the release point out front.  T2061, 1957 average rpm.
CB: 66.92-69.30 mph. CB has some good downward break to it with some decent spin. Threw it for a strike and misses were down in the zone, good chase pitches.  T2285, 2204 average rpm.
CH: 74.60-76.93 mph. Throws the CH with confidence. Has some good horizontal movement. As FB velo progresses this pitch could be an out pitch.  T1855, 1756 average rpm.
 

Santiago DiBene, Nogales (AZ), 2022
Positional Profile: RHP Has some upside with the body and delivery. Still has room to mature and add strength. Will be following physical development.
Body: 6-foot-2, 160-pounds.
Delivery: Sets up in an offset position out of the windup. Sinks into his back leg some and gets down the mound well.
Arm Action: RH. Delivers from a high 3/4 slot with good arm speed.
FB: T83.95, 80.80-82.91 mph. Comes out of the hand good with some decent induced vertical break numbers. With added strength and his build, could see a velo jump in the future. T2252, 2179 average rpm.
SL: 68.88-69.97 mph. SL was commanded well, needs to keep it down in the zone to be effective.  T1302, 1259 average rpm.
CH: 65.39-67.84 mph. SPLT showed to be best off speed option on this day. Has downward movement and throws it with intent.  T1539, 1479 average rpm.
 

Ruben Villaescusa, Tucson (AZ), 2022
Positional Profile: OF/RHP Has some strength, size, and good actions. Upside as a two way prospect.
Body: 6-2, 200-pounds. Strong build, strength in lower half.
Delivery: Simple mechanics out of the windup and stretch. Uses a slide step out of the stretch. Good mix of pitches.
Arm Action: RH. Throws from a 3/4 slot. Good mix of pitches with consistent release points.
FB: T85.71, 79.94-83.70 mph. Likes to work arm side and down with the FB. Has some good horizontal movement to it that will get in on RHH hands.  T2276, 2041 average rpm.
CB: 68.34-70.43 mph.  T1942, 1583 average rpm.
SL: 71.23-72.53 mph. Commanded well with some late break to it. When it starts middle and ends up on black away, that's when it's best.  T2088, 1902 average rpm.
CH: 72.00-73.56 mph. Throws with FB arm speed and has some horizontal break. Tends to fly open with front side and misses are side. When he stays closed and gets down the mound it's effective.  T773, 773 average rpm.

Diego Garcia, Salpointe Catholic (AZ), 2023
Positional Profile: SS/RHP Clean actions and body control. Best tool is the glove. Posted event high spin numbers on the mound.
Body: 5-foot-11, 165-pounds.
Delivery: Good tempo and rhythm out of the windup. Has an athletic delivery.
Arm Action: RH. Throws from a high 3/4 slot.
FB: T79.77, 78.27-79.56 mph. Command of FB was spotty, velo numbers weren't high but the spin was. If command issues are cleaned up could be effective.  T2475, 2339 average rpm.
CB: 68.13-68.91 mph. Has some sharp downward break to it. Spin numbers are high and its commanded down in the zone. Has shape to be an out pitch.  T2655, 2565 average rpm.
SL: 68.48-71.28 mph. Similar shape to CB with a little bit more late break and less downward.  T2633, 2567 average rpm.

Bronson Sluiter, Higley (AZ), 2023
Positional Profile: RHP/OF With added strength and more usage of lower half, could see a velo jump. Ball comes out of his hand different and easy. Commanded the zone well. Good follow in 2023 class.
Body: 5-foot-11, 165-pounds.
Delivery: Stands tall throughout his windup. Effortless delivery, stays under control.
Arm Action: RH. Throws from a 3/4 slot. Ball explodes out of his hand.
FB: T81.77, 79.98-81.77 mph. Low effort with the arm action and ball comes out of the hand well. Has some arm side run to it and can get it to both sides of the plate. Everything is down.  T2195, 2153 average rpm.
SL: 69.51-70.31 mph. Shape to the SL is about 2/8 break. Has some good spin to it. Thrown for a strike.  T2258, 2223 average rpm.
CH: 72.34-74.20 mph. Throws with the same arm speed as FB. Commanded very well down in the zone for strikes. Has some good horizontal movement.  T1662, 1432 average rpm.

Carson Stoller, Sandra Day O'Connor (AZ), 2023
Positional Profile: LHP/OF Above average movement to FB. Will be following through spring.
Body: 6-foot-0, 170-pounds.
Delivery: Has a quicker tempo to his delivery. Flows well, at times tempo speeds up and throws off the mechanics. When timing is good, command is good.
Arm Action: LH. Throws from a 3/4 slot. Arm speed is good with a consistent release point on all pitches.
FB: T84.2, 78.41-84.02 mph. FB comes out of the hand good and has some serious arm side action. Was around the zone, this pitch will miss barrels. T2203, 2103 average rpm.
CB: 63.67-66.00 mph. CB has some good downward break when he gets out front. Gets around the CB at times and it hangs.  T1893, 1807 average rpm.
SL: 69.91-70.95 mph. Keeps the CH down in the zone. Arm speed is good and consistent with FB arm speed. Has some good horizontal break to it.  T1843, 1683 average rpm.

 

Blake Tigges, Sandra Day O'Connor (AZ), 2022
Positional Profile: SS/RHP Fundamental player, nothing flashy, gets the job done. Will follow through the spring.
Body: 5-10, 170-pounds. High waist with wiry strength. Twitchy actions.
Delivery: Stiff delivery. Above average strike thrower with all three pitches.
Arm Action: RH. Throws from a high 3/4 slot. Gets out front and through his pitches well.
FB: T80.17, 78.58-79.70 mph. FB has some good horizontal movement to it. Commanded well in the zone, more comfortable to the arm side.  T2013, 1996 average rpm.
SL: 69.52-70.44 mph. SL has some decent spin. Thrown for a strike. Break is across, tends to get around it at times. When he gets out front and on top, that's his best SL.  T2379, 2318 average rpm.
CH: 73.41-75.00 mph. Grip is deep in the palm. Straight CH, plays about 5 mph off the FB. Commanded well down in the zone. No misses up in the zone.  T1756, 1677 average rpm.
 

Samuel Brown, Bradshaw Mountain (AZ), 2022
Positional Profile: RHP/OF
Body: 6-foot-2, 175-pounds. Has some length.
Delivery: Athletic delivery with a consistent tempo. Sinks into his back leg and drives down the mound well.
Arm Action: RH. Throws from a high 3/4 slot with some arm speed.
FB: T83.1, 80.98-82.75 mph. FB command was spotty on this day. Ball stays true, cuts it at times.  T2154, 2085 average rpm.
CB: 67.45-70.05 mph. CB has some downward break. Not much depth to it. Commanded in the zone, leaves it up at times. T1969, 1925 average rpm.
SL: 73.68-75.89 mph. Throws the SL harder than the CB. Struggled to command SL. Has some late downward break when thrown for a strike.  T2021, 1971 average rpm.
CH: 73.85-75.51 mph. Straight change that plays 8-10 mph off the FB. Commanded down in the zone, could get some swings over the top.  T1341, 1216 average rpm.
 

Deegan Cordova, Lake Havasu (AZ), 2023
Positional Profile: RHP/C Upside is on the mound. Good athlete and build. Still room for added strength. Good follow.
Body: 6-2, 175-pounds. Athletic build with some strength and room to add to it.
Delivery: Sets up in a staggered position out of the windup with a strong base and compact delivery.
Arm Action: RH. Throws from a high 3/4 slot with good arm speed. More comfortable to the arm side with all pitches.
FB: T88.61, 85.78-87.83 mph. FB has some life to it. Stays true with high induced vertical break. Mostly arm side.  T2095, 2031 average rpm.
CB: 68.35-70.24 mph. Has some downward break to it. Majority arm side.Tends to get around it at times.  T2057, 1956 average rpm.
SL:  mph. SL plays like a cutter. New pitch in his arsenal.  T1983, 1983 average rpm.
CH: 77.58-79.99 mph. CH plays 6-8 mph off the FB. Uses a loose grip. Misses were arm side, made an adjustment during bullpen and saw improvement with command.  T1952, 1787 average rpm. 

Trevor Collins, Sunnyslope (AZ), 2023
Positional Profile: RHP/C Pitchability guy with some upside. Ball has some action to it. Good follow.
Body: 6-foot-0, 185-pounds. Good size with strength in lower half.
Delivery: Slower and controlled tempo to delivery with good posture.
Arm Action: RH. Throws from a 3/4 slot with average arm speed.
FB: T82.29, 79.81-81.73 mph. Stays majority arm side with the FB. Has some good horizontal movement. Event high for horizontal movement.  T2019, 1955 average rpm.
SL: 76.30-77.80 mph. Throws with a spiked grip. Backs up on him at times. Break is 2/8. T2035, 1965 average rpm.
CH: 71.83-74.73 mph. Stays majority arm side with the CH. Consistent with it down in the zone with some horizontal movement. Good pitch to LHH. Showed as best off speed option on this day.  T1851, 1851 average rpm.

Gabriel Torres, Mountain Pointe (AZ), 2022
Positional Profile: 2B/RHP
Body: 5-11, 170-pounds.
Delivery: Average tempo out of the windup. Sinks into his back leg as he gets down the mound.
Arm Action: RH. Delivers from a 3/4 slot.
FB: T74.2, 72.48-74.07 mph. FB stays true. Commanded well, got it to both sides of the plate.  T1800, 1599 average rpm.
CB: 60.67-64.87 mph. Downward break to the CB. CB pops out of hand.  T1651, 1524 average rpm.
CH: 60.14-62.50 mph. Straight CH thrown down in the zone. Will get hitters out front with large velo differential.  T1691, 1592 average rpm.
 

Kyle Jefferies, Gilbert (AZ), 2023 
Positional Profile: 
Body: 5-foot-9, 140-pounds. Lean build, high waist. Room for physical development.
Delivery: Wide base out of the windup. Starts from the left side of the rubber, has a slight turn of the hips towards 2B during leg lift. Slower tempo with good rhythm.
Arm Action: RH. Throws from a high 3/4 arm slot. Arm speed is consistent with all three pitches.
FB: T80.3, 78.6-80.3 mph. FB stays true and at the top of the zone. Plays well with his induced vertical break numbers at the top of the zone.  T2219, 2137 average rpm.
CB: 67.75-69.64 mph. CB has downward tumbling type break with some decent spin numbers.  T2281, 2217 average rpm.

CH: 70.03-72.21 mph. CH is more of a straight change. Commanded it down in the zone and misses were down out of the zone.  T1945, 1830 average rpm.

 

Sean Jefferies, Gilbert (AZ), 2022
Positional Profile:  Potential on both side of the ball pending added strength. Showed good defensive actions and some upside on the mound.
Body: 6-foot, 140-pounds. Slim build with a high waist. Room to add physicality.
Delivery: Stays tall throughout windup, glides down the mound. Throws from the left side of the rubber.
Arm Action: RH. Throws from a 3/4 slot. Arm action is loose.
FB: T81.6, 78.88-81.6 mph. FB has slight arm side run to it. Was at the top half of the zone on this day.  T2277, 2170 average rpm.
CB: 63.67-66.91 mph. High spin numbers on the CB. Has some good bite to it, with added velo has potential to be a real out pitch.  T2451, 2377 average rpm.
CH: 70.32-71.65 mph. CH plays 8-10 mph off the FB with some horizontal movement.  T2240, 2058 average rpm.

Collin Riff, Saguaro (AZ), 2022
Positional Profile: RHP/1B High upside with length and arm action. SL showed to be potential out pitch.
Body: 6-6, 190-pounds.
Delivery: Throws from the left side of the rubber. Motion has some tempo to it.
Arm Action: RH. Delivers from a high 3/4 slot. Max effort delivery with some arm speed.
FB: T89.14, 84.55-89.12 mph. FB stays pretty true with some good velo. Can pitch at the top of the zone and when he goes down there's some tilt. Command is questionable.  T2149, 1970 average rpm.
CB: 70.51-71.30 mph. Downward break to the CB. Spins it well, with added command the shape shows to be an out pitch.  T2600, 2495 average rpm.
CH: 73.76-79.07 mph. CH some horizontal movement to it. Misses were arm side, command is questionable.  T1786, 1657 average rpm.
 

Max Slavin, Rock Canyon (CO), 2022
Positional Profile: OF/3B Higher upside as a hitter. Strength, size, and bat speed.
Body: 6-2, 190-pounds. Large build with strength.
Delivery: Throws from the stretch. Sinks into back leg as he gets down the mound.
Arm Action: RH. Throws from a high 3/4 slot. High effort level in delivery.
FB: T79.53, 78.09-79.45 mph. FB stays true, misses were armside. Command was questionable on this day.  T2132, 1997 average rpm.
CB: 68.83-69.63 mph. Some decent spin to the CB. Break is 2/8. Commanded well down.  T2334, 2166 average rpm.
CH: 72.70-74.65 mph. Straight change that is either at the bottom of the zone or an arm side miss.  T1712, 1614 average rpm.
 

Ryan Weller, Horizon (AZ), 2023
Positional Profile: OF/RHP Upside on the mound with high spin. Potential RHP out of the pen with a put away SL
Body: 6-foot-3, 165-pounds. Thin build with some length.
Delivery: Throws from the stretch. Faster tempo with a high leg lift.
Arm Action: RH. Throws from a high 3/4 slot with good front side involvement. High effort delivery with a quick arm.
FB: T83.27, 81.30-82.97 mph. FB stays true with high spin. Command was spotty on this day. When thrown for a strike it was located well down.  T2339, 2289 average rpm.
CB: 68.69-72.82 mph. Very high spin numbers. CB has more downward break than the SL. Both CB and SL showed to be potential put away pitches.  T2803, 2667 average rpm.
CH: 69.76-71.47 mph. CH stays true, majority stayed arm side.  T2617, 1849 average rpm.
 

Landon Turnage, Sandra Day O'Connor (AZ), 2023
Positional Profile: RHP/3B
Body: 6-foot-2, 160-pounds.
Delivery: Quick and controlled tempo out of the windup.
Arm Action: RH. Arm action has some whip to it.
FB: T81.98, 80.60-81.94 mph. FB stays true and was commanded well to both sides.  T2097, 2027 average rpm.
CB: 67.14-69.17 mph. Gets some good extension on the CB. Break type is almost sweeping.  T1953, 1828 average rpm.
CH: 72.71-74.07 mph. CH stays true, lacked command of it on this day. Plays 6-8 mph off the FB.  T1764, 1638 average rpm.
