Fall Upperclass Showcase: Position Player Reports

Paul Panaccione
Arizona Scouting Director

On Oct. 17, 2021 Prep Baseball Report Arizona hosted the Fall Upperclass Showcase at Grand Canyon University. The Fall Upperclass Showcase is an annual open showcase accessible to high school players in the Phoenix area, granting players the opportunity to be evaluated by the PBR Arizona staff while their tools were analyzed by state-of-the-art technologies on-site.

With some talented players in attendance, there were some standout performances. Along with the standout performances, there were some standout bodies, and players with much project-ability. One big standout at the Fall Upperclass Showcase was Arizona St commit, Dante Turgeon. Turgeon is a big bodied, power hitting corner infielder that put up some big numbers in his rounds during batting practice. Another standout was SS/2B Jacob Charlson, Charlson is a well rounded baseball players with some advanced defensive skills. OF Jack Ellsworth, Central AZ commit, showed his tools at the showcase with loud rounds of BP and some arm strength. Ellsworth took arguably the best BP at the event. And 3B/1B Max Leyva showed some skills on both sides of the ball. An above average defender on the corners with some bat speed and strength.

Today we finalize the event by looking into each position player's full analysis.

Run: 7.69 runner in the 60.

Demario Faison, Estrella Foothills (AZ), 2023
Positional Profile: OF/RHP Interesting follow, added size and strength could do a lot for his development. Good athlete and a strike thrower on the mound.
Body: 5-foot-10, 145-pounds. Athletic build, good frame. Room for physical development.
Hit: RHH. Base is about shoulder width, sets up square to the pitcher with front foot slightly open. Hands are pushed forward, held at about his ear. Elbows are in tighter with some rhythm. Stride is direct, gains a little bit of ground during stride. Clear inside path to the baseball, tries to work inside of everything, causes him to lose the barrel at times. With his size and strength, would benefit from more top hand involvement.
Power: 89.4 max exit velocity, averaged 78.78 mph. 313’ max distance.
Arm:  OF - 84 mph. Throws from a high 3/4 slot. Good arm strength with 4 seam carry. Throws were slightly above the cut, would benefit from lower trajectory.

Positional Profile: C/2B
Body: 5-foot-11, 145-pounds. Lanky build with a high waist. Room to add physicality.
Hit: RHH. Sets up slightly open just outside of shoulder width. Athletic bend at the knees and hands are rested on shoulder.  Stride is up and down, gets him back to a square position. Too much length with stride at times. Cocks the hands during stride and as the hands fire a small amount of length is created. Would benefit from staying tighter to the body with hands.
Power: 84.73 max exit velocity, averaged 70.16 mph. 299’ max distance. High 5 of fly balls. With current build, more line drive contact would create most success.
Arm: RH. C - 71 mph.   Longer arm action at the C position. Arm strength is average. Gets good extension through the ball and throws were on the bag.
Defense: 2.35-2.45 pop times. Has some length in his footwork to 2B on throw downs which leads to a slower transfer time. Good flexibility in stance. Showed multiple different setups. Timing with the glove while receiving is slightly late, added strength in forearms will improve receiving ability.
Run: 7.95 runner in the 60.

Tyler Bailey, Eastmark (AZ), 2022
Positional Profile: OF/RHP
Body: 5-10, 150-pounds. Long legs and high waist. Room to add physical strength.
Hit: RHH. Narrow setup with a slightly open stance. Hands held above the shoulder, bat is held horizontally.  Starts load by sinking into the back leg, stride creates some length with base and hands. When he gets to a strong balanced position and catches the ball out front, there's some bat speed and solid impact. Length with stride and hands creates inconsistencies with barrel.
Power: 97.05 max exit velocity, averaged 82.9 mph. 344’ max distance.
Arm:  OF - 89 mph. Posted an event high for OF velo. Throws from a high 3/4 slot and balls were carrying through the cut and on target. Timing to release was consistent.

Run: 7.42 runner in the 60.

Body: 5-foot-9, 150-pounds. Athletic body.
Hit: RHH. Slightly open with stance. Base is just outside of shoulder width. Hands are held at the right chest area.  Stride is up and down towards the pitcher, first movement with hands creates some length, pushes hands back. Some inconsistencies with the barrel due to length in swing.
Power: 79.08 max exit velocity, averaged 59.57 mph. 238’ max distance.
Arm: INF - 68 mph.  Throws from a high 3/4 slot, smooth arm action, does not over throw.
Defense: Calm defensive actions. Feet get stagnant at times, putting himself in a difficult spot to field certain hops. Range is good, glove is inconsistent. Best INF spot is 2B.
Run: 7.82 runner in the 60.

Matthew Ramsdell, Eastmark (AZ), 2022
Positional Profile: SS/2B
Body: 5-foot-9, 155-pounds. Compact build, has some strength.
Hit: RHH. Narrow in setup with an open stance. Slight bend in the knees and hands are held low, resting the bat on his shoulder.  Uses a direct stride that gets him back to square and creates some separation with hands. Hips slide slightly with stride. Swing is flat and slightly armsy. Would benefit from added lower half involvement.
Power: 87.84 max exit velocity, averaged 72.57 mph. 296’ max distance. High % of line drive contact. Ball would be impacted harder with more use of lower half.
Arm: INF - 67 mph.  Throws from a high 3/4 slot with ability to drop to lower slots. Quick to release, not big arm strength but he gets the ball out quick. Arm plays from the left side.
Defense: Seems to understand body positioning and hops. Glove work is good and he is quick and consistent to release. More of a catch and release guy, gets it to the hand and out of the hand quick. Profiles as a middle infielder.
Run: 7.51 runner in the 60.

Ruben Villaescusa, Tucson (AZ), 2022
Positional Profile: OF/RHP Has some strength, size, and good actions. Upside as a two way prospect.
Body: 6-2, 200-pounds. Strong build, strength in lower half.
Hit: RHH. Simple setup, base outside out shoulder width slightly open. Hands are held just above the back shoulder with some rhythm. Loads onto back side and creates some separation with hands. Swing is flat and creates consistent hard contact. On ground balls to pull side he just gets a hair out front and can't hold his line any longer. Would benefit from pushing the ball back a bit and making contact from a stronger position, this would create more line drive contact to gaps. Overall swing works well with good bat speed.
Power: 100.76 max exit velocity, averaged 89.36 mph. 360’ max distance. Ball is impacted well with backspin flight.
Arm:  OF - 87 mph. Throws from a high 3/4 slot. Ball has slight 2 seam carry. Arm strength is good and throws were accurate.
Defense: Footwork and glove work is consistent. Takes some time to get the ball out in the OF, slower release time, but the arm strength is there. LF seems to be best spot defensively.
Run:  runner in the 60.

Hunter Cline, Desert Vista (AZ), 2023
Positional Profile: C/1B
Body: 5-foot-10, 165-pounds. Average build, has some strength in the lower half.
Hit: RHH. Setup is simple, shoulder width base with a bend in the knees. Hands held in front of the right chest with bat held vertically.  Stride is direct and he's heavy on his front side. Being heavy on the front side, it creates some length with the hands. Swing is flat and through the zone, with the length it makes it harder for him to get to the ball in. Put up high numbers in blast categories.
Power: 90.22 max exit velocity, averaged 81.04 mph. 303’ max distance.
Arm: RH. C - 71 mph. INF - 70 mph.  Throws from a lower slot in the INF. Ball has some 2 seam flight across diamond. Short arm action. Simple mechanics throwing from the C position. Arm works better at C, uses more lower half and gets through the ball better.
Defense: 2.3-2.4 pop times. Has good direction with his body when fielding balls in the infield. Was consistent with the glove, room to add some rhythm and activity with the feet. Showed some blocking ability at C position. Wants to work underneath the ball while receiving, sets target low on the ground. Doesn't do too much, keeps strikes as strikes and catches balls.
Run: 7.42 runner in the 60.

Jacob Charlson, Canyon Del Oro (AZ), 2023
Positional Profile: SS/2B Good build with clean actions and baseball instincts. Good follow in the middle infield in 2023 class.

Hit: RHH. Upright in stance, base just outside of shoulder width. Hands are pushed off the back shoulder with the barrel laid out slightly.  Uses a simple up and down stride. Swing works well to right center, drove multiple balls to the off side gap in batting practice. Tends to spin off on the ball in on occasion. Balls middle/middle-away he stays on and gets through them. Balls middle-in tends to rush and flies open.
Power: 89.86 max exit velocity, averaged 83.09 mph. 321’ max distance.
Arm: INF - 76 mph.  Consistently gets to a good position to throw from. Arm is accurate, strength is questionable. Ability to throw from different body positions and on the run.

Body: 5-foot-11, 165-pounds.
Hit: RHH. Quiet and rhythmic setup. Base is just outside of shoulder width, slightly open, with slight bend in the knees. Hands held ear height at back shoulder.  Lacks consistency with the barrel. Tends to lose the barrel creating weak offside contact. Would benefit from a flattened out path and more extension through the baseball.
Power: 83.27 max exit velocity, averaged 70 mph. 284’ max distance.
Arm: INF - 74 mph.  Throws from a 3/4 slot. Easy arm action with accurate throws. Does not seem to use all of his arm. More of a finesse infielder.

Hands held in tight to body with bat laying flat on shoulder, back elbow slightly raised.  Weight starts even, loads onto back side, stride is direct and gets him back square to pitcher. Has some bat speed, consistent hard contact. Best when working through the middle, gets slightly rotational to pull side. When balls are driven to the middle, he gets through the ball great and finished low and two handed, this is his best position.
Power: 93.49 max exit velocity, averaged 87.98 mph. 338’ max distance. Consistent hard contact, works well to the middle.
Arm:  OF - 85 mph. Throws from a high 3/4 slot, has some arm strength. Throws were low and through the cut with 4 seam flight. Very consistent through the cut and on the bag.
