Franklin County and Halifax County have been sports rivals for many years in Southern Virginia. Today’s baseball tilt was no exception, as the Franklin County Eagles defeated the Comets of Halifax 5-2

The Comet’s jumped in the lead quickly, when Alex Lowery delivered a towering home run down the left field line on the fifth pitch of the game. Comet’s starter, Drew Harlow dispatched the Eagles in the bottom of the frame, striking out the side with his power fastball.

In the top of the third, the Comets added another run, when Lowery doubled and scored on Clay Lloyd’s two out single. Through the first three innings the Comets were in charge, however, the Eagles never wavered.

In the bottom of the fourth the Eagle’s offense exploded. Leadoff hitter Easton Forbes was hit by a Harlow fastball, Jay Moeler walked, and Colton Kent reached on an infield single. Cameron Mullins drove in both Forbes and Moeler, tying the game at two runs for each team, however, the Eagles had more work to do. Noah Basham and Grayson Chitwood put together back-to-back singles, scoring Kent and Mullins. The five-run inning brought nine batters to the plate and a three-run advantage for the Eagles.

Eagles starting pitcher Will Turner was excellent, allowing two runs, scattering nine hits, and striking out three.

Halifax County drops to 20-5 and Franklin County is 12-10-1
