SCOUTING REPORT

4/09/19

VA/DC Scout Blog

Carter has a strong frame that he has actually slimmed down some during the offseason in a good way. Behind the plate, looked fine receiving, presents a good strike. Didn't get a chance to throw in-game and double-clutched his between inning throws, but the release looked good and there was some accuracy to his throws as well as some carry on the ball. At the plate, hits from the right side, quiet simple setup, good balance to swing, quick bat with a lot of strength at contact and extension through the ball. The first swing in the video was a ball he absolutely crushed to deep center for a double. Showed good approach not getting pull happy, worked the middle of the field and kept his hands in.

Preseason All-State Session I

6-foot, 195-pound strong athletic frame. Ran a 4.31 Home-1st showing some athleticism for a power hitting catcher. Athletic square stance with a small toe tap to stride landing on line. Hands load back to an arm bar. Hands are quick getting started and bat path is short to the ball with some uphill tilt to the swing and a high finish. Has a strong lower half and finishes the hips completely on a swing that has some gap to gap power potential. Exit velo was 93 mph. Feet were short and quick behind the plate to a quick clean exchange. Throws were in line from a short quick arm action and an over the top slot. Throw velocity was 77 mph and pop times ranged from 2.00-2.07.

Mid-Atlantic Challenge

Solid Frame with strong lower half at 6-foot, 195-pounds. Hits from an athletic set up at the plate. Deliberate load with weight back and nice rhythm. Arm bar with strong hands, level swing path with some uphill finish. Hands worked well through contact and shows some strength to opposite field. Strong lower half involvement with potential for pop. Exit velo of 90 mph. Advance receiver behind the plate. Sticks ball well and quiet, present excellent target for pitchers and displays hip control to control the baseball. Works hard behind the dish and will keep a running game at bay. Quick hands and exchange with strong arm, up to 75 mph. Gets rid of it quickly, almost too quick during workout as opposed to game. Lowest pop during workout was 1.93 and rushed at times. In game more accurate throws with pop in the 1.97 range. Interesting prospect in the 2021 class.

PBR Future Games

Solid frame with strong lower half at 6-foot, 195-pounds. Ran a 7.66 60-yard dash. Hits from an athletic set up with hands at shoulder level. Has a smooth rock-back load with leg kick to hitting position and arm bar. Longer swing path through the zone with quick hands and strong barrel. Barrelled well during BP, working the left center gap and showing a middle approach. Power potential down the road. Exit velocity of 91 mph. Presents good target for pitchers to work with. Sound receiver with soft hands and stiicks ball well. Nice hip control and works hard on dirt ball to work hips around. Clean footwork behind the plate with quick exchange to release and a short arm action. Pop time as low as 2.00 on the day with a velo of 79 mph.

Underclass Games

Carter is 5-11 with an athletic frame and a strong lower half, some projection left to his mature frame as he gets a bit taller. He hits from the right side, from a balanced slightly open athletic stance, short leg kick stride in place, smooth load back with some rhythm to his set-up. Gets some hip rotation but maintains very good balance and a firm base during his swing. Shorter path to the ball, slightly uphill path with extension through the ball, very strong at contact, line drive swing now that worked gap to gap, projects to have power to all fields as he continues to get stronger and tap into it more, exit velocity was 89. Behind the plate, quick clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot with a short arm action, showed some accuracy on throw downs. Catcher velocity was 76 and pop times were 1.97-2.08.

He hits from the right side from an open athletic stance, big leg kick stride lands a bit open, smooth load back, good rhythm to his swing. Hips have some explosion, some balance to swing as well. Short to ball, slightly uphill swing path with extension through it. Showed good approach working middle of the field. Exit velocity was 84, has potential to have big power in the future. Behind the plate, receives ball with hands apart, quick clean transfer afterwards, gains ground to second. Throws from high three-quarters arm slot, short quick arm action, loose arm with life. Position velocity was 76, pop times were 2.06-2.17. Good wide stance receiving, works up to ball well and receives with good hands.
