Future Is Bright For Souhegan Baseball

AMHERST, N.H. - The outlook for 2021 is bright when it comes to baseball at Souhegan High School.

“We were looking forward to the 2020 season and ready to make a return as a top program showcasing Daniel Trezpacz (Delaware commit) in the middle of the lineup but that was derailed,” Souhegan head coach Tom Walker said. “Many of the Sabers were able to play competitively during the summer and fall and the results show we have the talent to be a contender in 2021 when the New Hampshire high schools return to play in early April.”

Five returning varsity players from the 2019 campaign are expected to lead the charge for Souhegan in seniors Nick Wilson, Reese Colby and David Rieth along with juniors Kyran Bagshaw and Dylan Dufour. Wilson, a Plymouth State commit, anchors a pitching rotation that includes Bagshaw, the fifth-ranked junior left-handed-pitcher in New England, and Dufour, the 108th-rated 2022 RHP.

“The pitching staff looks to be the strength of the team with multiple arms being ready to take the hill when needed,” Walker pointed out. “Nick Wilson will be called upon to lead the staff and Dylan Dufour and Kyan Bagshaw will also get their share of innings.”

Depth comes via transfers Keegan Burke and Colin Burke, the 371st and 375th-rated New England juniors, respectively. Right-hander Ryan Humphrey is another that will get on the mound for the Sabers.

Freshman Nolan Colby is ready to take over at shortstop with the Burke brothers at third base and second base. Dufour and Bagshaw will share first-base duties with infield depth coming from junior Riley Carr, sophomore Hayden Goerlich and freshmen Teddy Kaetsel and Nick Nowack.

Reese Colby brings speed to the outfield in center with Wilson and Bagshaw on the corners. Juniors Dylan Button, Will Jaques and Eric Romano are newcomers looking to earn playing time in the outfield.

Reith and Carr along with junior Mitch Hauser and sophomore Brandon Dufour are more than capable behind the plate with a “strong stable of arms’ according to Walker.

“The lineup should be balanced with speed and power,” explained Walker. “We have four left-handed bats with Nolan Colby, Wilson, Bagshaw and Brandon Dufour with run support from Colin and Keegan Burke and Dylan Dufour, along with Button, Jaques, Hauser, Carr and Nowack.”

The season opener is at home against Campbell on April 12 with field dedication for retired Souhegan coach Bill Dod set for April 17. Dod holds the New Hampshire state record with 549 victories.

“The schedule will be challenging,” pointed out Walker, whose D-2 team will be hosting perennial D-I powers Windham and Portsmouth on April 17, as well as Salem to wrap up the regular season. In addition to Campbell, other opponents include rival Hollis-Brookline, Milford, Con-Val, Pelham and Sanborn.
