The Granby Comets scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie and hold on to defeat the previously unbeaten Maury Commodores 3-1.

This game flew through the first four innings as both starters, Pedro Orta (Norfolk State) for Granby and Ben Capehart (VMI) for Maury cruised shutting down both lineups.

As we headed into the fifth inning, the offense started to wake up for each squad, as Maury was able to strike first, getting the first run of the game when Vincent Bashara hit a seeing eye single over the shortstops head and just short of the outfielders coming in. There was a runner on during the play and as the runner advanced to third, Granby's outfielder attempted to throw the runner out at third and the throw sailed into the visitor dugout, allowing Maury to get on the board.

Granby came back in the bottom of the frame, getting their first run off the bat of senior Hunter Cole, who hit a single to left field and tied it up at 1 apiece.

Maury would threaten again in the top of the sixth, loading the bases with one out. Alvin (Tre) Keels led the inning off with a double down the left field line and Kennedy Jones was intentionally walked. An out would be followed by a single loading the bags. Granby would go to the pen during the inning and reliever Connor Highland was able to get a strikeout and ground-out, leaving the bases full as Granby took some momentum into the bottom of the inning which they used to their advantage.

The Comet would get runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the sixth. With the infield in, the Commodores were able to induce a ground out and not allow the runners to advance with now two out. A tough play ground-ball forced an errant throw pulling the first baseman off the bag, allowing both runners to score and give Granby the 3-1 lead. Cameron Pollari came into to close the game out and after getting two quick outs allowed a single to give Maury some hope. Keels then sent a well hit fly ball to left center field where Granby center fielder Quinn Gagne made a highlight reel catch at full extension to end the game.

Keels led Maury with two hits on the day. Capehart got the hard luck loss in a 13 strikeout effort while scattering three hits and was not charged with an earned run.

Orta went five strong innings for Granby, scattering three hits while striking out seven. Cole led the Comets with a hit and RBI. Myles Webb and Jordan Hill had the other Comet hits in the game.
