On Tuesday, March 13, Woodson hosted a short-handed West Potomac team in an opening-night matchup of former District rivals and a potential Region C tournament preview. Gametime temperature was in the low-40s as both teams began their seasons sending their returning aces to the mound. West Potomac sent junior Jimmy Curley (High Point) to the mound and Woodson countered with senior Hunter Hoopes (UNC-Asheville).

West Potomac got off to a quick start in the first as senior first baseman Liam McClanahan got the scoring started with a two-run home run to centerfield. Woodson's offense responded, scoring one in the first on a Brian Hennessey RBI single and adding two more in the second, with the go-ahead run coming on a Garrett Laraia (Cabrini) single with two outs. After two complete, Woodson led, 3-2.

West Potomac responded in the third as rightfielder Alec Roberts (Charlotte) tripled into the leftfield corner and scored the tying run on a wild pitch. Woodson added runs in the third and fourth innings to build a 5-3 lead. West Potomac cut into the deficit in the sixth as Curley doubled and came around to score. But ultimately Woodson would hang on to pick up the opening night win with a final score of 5-4.

For West Potomac, Curley was 1-3 at the plate with a double and a run. On the mound he went 2 IP, 3 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 3 K. Roberts was 2-3 with a BB, 3B, and 2 runs scored. Sophomore lefty Adam Fischer threw 2 scoreless innings.

For Woodson, Hoopes earned the win with 4 IP, 3 R, 3 H, 3 BB, 6 K. Hennessey went 3-3 with a HBP. Sophomore Richie Dudley went 1-2 with a BB, 2 SB, and 2 R.

Scouting Notes

West Potomac
-2019 RHP Jimmy Curley was 82-86 in both of his innings of work and held his velocity in the stretch. Easy effort, some sink to his fastball. Good armspeed on slider with gradual late break, pitch was 76-77. Slider flashed swing and miss potential when he had it down.

-2018 OF Alec Roberts showed power to all fields, triple was in a two-strike count to deep left, single was ripped to right field. Has good speed for a corner OF, should be able to steal some bases, arm showed some carry during pre-game and his one in-game throw was right on the money.

-2019 OF/LHP Jack Bachmore showed some batspeed at the plate, line drive swing with some doubles potential. Was 76-78, touching 79. Showed a sharp curveball with good armspeed that was 68-69.

-2020 LHP Adam Fischer threw with normal effort, fastball was 76-79, flashed an 82 once. Showed a sharp curveball that was 66-68.

Woodson
-2018 Hunter Hoopes was 84-86, touching 87 once. Held his velocity through his four innings of work and only dropped down to 84 when in the stretch. Feel of curveball was off, slowed arm to spin it, pitch was 63-65. Shape shows promise, but needs to throw with confidence.

-2018 LHP Chris Dudley threw from a sidearm slot and was 78-80, touching 81. Sweeping slider that had some depth and was 66-68. Tough angle for lefthanded hitters.

-2019 OF Ryan Krahulec showed some speed and some potential at the plate. Did a good job in first at-bat against Curley of battling from behind in the count to double down the leftfield line. Stayed short and got barrel to the ball.

-2018 SS Garrett Laraia (Cabrini) showed some power to his pull side and looked very athletic and smooth at short.
