After Hanover starter 2019 Colby Hutnan (Lynchburg) got some early help from his offense, it was freshman Chase Hustead that came in and gave the Hawks three and a third innings of work to limit the Deep Run offense as Hanover pulled out a later inning 7-6 victory in a back and forth affair.

Hanover jumped up early in the first after a bases loaded RBI single by Hutnan and another bases loaded RBI single by senior Jack Goleski, making it 2-0. Jack Mardigian added to it with another making it 5-0 nothing after one inning,

After the scoring burst by Hanover, neither team managed much until a two out grand slam by Deep Run second baseman Brooks Mazey (Randolph Macon), making the score 5-4 in favor of Hanover.

Deep Run loaded the bases in the top of the 4th, when Hustead entered and got a huge strikeout for Hanover getting them out of the jam. In the top of the 5th Mazey led off with a double to deep right and with two walks to follow to the next two batters the bases were loaded with nobody out for the Wildcats. Hayes Fallen (Hampden Sydney) got a sac fly to tie it up at 5-5 before a passed ball scored another to give Deep Run their first lead of the night at 6-5.

In the bottom of the 5th Hanover loaded the bases with nobody out before senior third baseman Jack Mardigian got another RBI single tying it up at 6-6 and a passed ball a few pitches later gave Hanover the final lead of the night at 7-6. Hustead came back out for the top of the 7th to face the middle of the Deep Run order and the freshman rose to the occasion. Hustead got a flyout to third, a swinging strikeout on a 3-2 fastball, and a pop out to first to end the night for the visitors from Deep Run with a final score of 7-6 in favor of Hanover.

Once settling down after a shaky top of the first Deep Run starter Tyler Bradt (VMI) threw four innings and struck out nine. Junior Ryan Carroll threw one and two thirds of no hit ball for the Wildcats. Offensively the Wildcats were paced by Mazey who was 2-for-4 with four RBI, two runs scored, a home run, and a double.

Colby Hutnan’s line for the night was three innings pitched, allowed two hits, and struck out six. Hutnan also ended up 2-3 on the night with one run scored and one RBI. Mardigian was 2-3 with two RBI.
