Hoosier Holiday Showcase: Pitchers Analysis

On Sunday, December 6th, we hosted the annual Hoosier Holiday Showcase at Lawrence North High School in Indianapolis. Today, we analyze the pitchers that attended the event.

TOP PROSPECT

Chandler Ferguson, RHP, Lafayette Jeff HS, 2017: Highly projectable right hander, stands in at 6-foot-3, 185 pounds.  Strong, athletic frame.  Pitches from a high ¾ slot with lightening quick arm speed.  Smooth rhythm, uphill shoulders.  Good direction, athletic finish.  Fastball gets on you quick at 86-88, lots of life.  Sharp breaking ball with an 11/5 shape thrown for a strike at 74-75; potential plus pitch.  Knuckle ball sits at 77-78, thrown hard with lots of movement and kept in the zone.  Changeup sat 81-83 with occasional sink.  High follow in the 2017 class. Recently named the No. 1 player in Indiana's 2017 class. 

ALPHABETICAL ORDER

Garrett Burhenn, RHP, Lawrence North HS, 2018: 6-foot-1, 155 pounder righty pitches from a ¾ slot with above average arm speed.  Loose arm action.  Smooth rhythm in the delivery with uphill shoulders.  Stays in line to the plate.  Fastball shows run at 80-83.  Breaking ball is 70-72 with an 11/5 shape showing some late bite.  Changeup was inconsistent in the zone but shows arm side run.  Hides the ball well and repeats his delivery. 

Ethan Froehlke, LHP, Huntington North HS, 2017: 6-foot-2, 180 pounds works at a slow, deliberate pace.  Quick, short arm action from a high ¾ slot.  Max effort.  Uphill shoulders, good line to the plate.  Lands closed with an athletic finish.  Fastball was erratic in the zone at 79-82.  Breaking ball was inconsistent but flashed a few power breaking balls with an 11/5 shape and sharp break.  Changeup was 72-74.  

Justin Miller, LHP, Homestead HS, 2018: 5-foot-10, 165 pound southpaw is athletic player.  Pitches from a high ¾ slot with quick arm speed.  Stab on the backside of his arm action.  Smooth rhythm.  Fairly clean mechanically.  Fastball was 77-80.  Good breaking ball at 66-70.  Changeup was 70-73.  

Logan Missal, RHP, Lowell HS, 2019: 5-foot-10, 175 pounder showcased a quick arm from a ¾ slot.  Loose arm action.  Over the head pump with an inward turn in the delivery.  Good direction to the plate, finishes athletic.  Fastball was 75-77.  Flashed a couple of good 2-seamers at 72-76.  Breaking ball has an 11/5 shape with gradual break at 65-66.  Changeup was 71-73.  Good follow in the 2019 class.   

Noah Mourey, RHP, Cascade HS, 2018: 5-foot-10, 165 pound right-hander pitches from a high ¾ slot with a short arm action.  Average arm speed.  Good balance point, max effort with some rhythm in the delivery.  Stays in line, finishes athletic.  Fastball was flat, but hard at 76-79 and thrown for a strike.  Slider had a cut type action at 73-76.  Changeup was erratic in the zone at 66-70; slows his arm down when throwing the changeup.   

Carson Ramirez, RHP, Munster HS, 2018: 6-foot-1, 155 pounder pitches from a high ¾ slot with a long arm action.  Average arm speed.  Shows some rhythm with uphill shoulders in the delivery; high front side.  Lands open.  High front side.  Fastball shows run and sink at 74-75.  Breaking ball was thrown for a strike at 68-69.  Changeup is straight and thrown for a strike at 68-69. 

Dawson Read, RHP, Indian Creek HS, 2018: 6-foot-1, 160 pounder pitches from an over the top to high ¾ slot, quick arm speed.  Short arm action.  Good balance point.  Max effort with some rhythm in the delivery.  Level sholders, good line to the plate.  Finishes athletic.  Fastball was hard and thrown for a strike at 80-81.  Breaking ball showed a 12/6 shape with gradual break at 66-69.  Changeup was kept down in the zone but erratic at 71-72.  

Nathan Toone, RHP, Evansville North HS, 2018: 6-foot-3, 165 pound righty pitches from a high ¾ slot with a long, quick arm action.  Inward turn with a high front side; uphill shoulders.  Hard fastball up to 84 mph.  Breaking ball was more of a spinner at 65-69.  Knuckle ball at 61-63; best off-speed pitch.  

Hayden Wynja, LHP, Heritage Christian HS, 2017: Good pitchers frame at 6-foot-6, 180 pounds.  Good athleticism.  Arm action is quick and clean, pitches from a high ¾ slot.  Easy effort, good rhythm in the delivery.  Lands square, athletic finish.  Fastball was 77-80, kept down in the strike zone.  Breaking ball sat 66-67 while the changeup was 68-72.  Arm speed suggests he’ll see a velocity increase in the near future.
