Inaugural Future Prospects Showcase: Player Analysis







On Saturday, March 14th, PBR Indiana hosted its Inaugural Future Prospects Showcase at Incrediplex in Indianapolis, IN. 

The main purpose of the event was to educate players and parents in the 2019-2021 classes on how the recruiting process works and what college recruiters and scouts look for and expect from high school players.  The 37 players in attendance were given the opportunity to run through a pro-style workout and were provided valuable information on how to best prepare for a successful showing at future showcases and camps they attend throughout their high school careers.

Below we take a look at all the players who participated in the event.  

2019's

Corbin Beard, C/RHP, Rossville HS, 2019 

Corbin has good balance and setup behind the plate.  Arm action is quick.  He will need to quiet his movement behind the plate as he matures.  His pop times were 2.56-2.63.  On the mound, his fastball was straight and sat 62-64mph.   Corbin’s slider has gradual break and thrown 58-61mph.    His rhythm is smooth and he finishes athletically.  Arm speed will need to increase on the mound as he adds strength.  Offensively, he has above average bat speed and a level path to the ball.  His backside has a tendency to collapse.  He produced an exit velo of 74mph.  

Duane Carlisle, OF/SS, Home School, 2019

As an 8th grader, Duane is very athletic.  He ran a 7.25 60yd dash.  His baseball actions need cleaned up but with maturity, he could be a solid baseball player.  At the plate, he has fast hands and good pop.  His swing has a lot of activity and has a tendency to dive at the ball.  He produced several line drives and a showcase high of 85mph exit velocity.  His lower half is explosive but balance can improve.  His swing is level with decent extension.  Defensively, he has a short arm action and average arm speed.  His exchange is quick but stiff.  His footwork did not get through the ball, but was quick.  More of a replace than “getting through the ball”.  It will be interesting to see how he matures as a baseball player.

Justin Castetter, RHP/SS, Zionsville MS, 2019

Justin is projectable with his frame and arm action.  He throws from a high ¾ arm slot.  His delivery has rhythm and some effort, but maintains good balance and direction.  His fastball has slight run and thrown for a strike (sat 71-72, topped 74).  Justin’s CB has 11/5 shape with gradual break at 62mph.  It was thrown for a strike at times and displayed potential to be a good pitch.  His change-up displayed arm-side run and fade.  At the plate, he has a tall setup and loads back.  After a slight leg kick, he has a level swing and produces line drives.  Justin’s exit velo was 80mph.  His throws were accurate with carry.  Hands were above average.  Exchange was quick.  His footwork will need to quicken if wants to play middle infield.  He ran an 8.13 60.  With added strength, Justin could be a high follow in 2019 class.

Collin Faubion, C, Doe Creek MS, 2019

Collin ran a 7.5 60 yd dash.  He showcased athletic actions for his age.  He produced an 81mph exit velo from the left handed side.  Bat speed was fast and bat path was uphill.  Front side was stiff but backside got through well.  Defensively, he projects behind the plate more than in the OF.  Hands were soft and primary was balanced.  His arm action needs work as he matures.  Currently it is too long and stiff as he comes through.    Pop times were 2.44-2.53.  His frame and bat speed show potential to be a solid hitter.

Dawson Gabe, RHP/3B, Belzer MS, 2019

Dawson features a balanced, open stance at the plate.  He has a leg kick as hands drop.  He has above average bat speed and a good approach.  He produced several line drives (exit velo of 74mph) with a level swing.   On the mound, Dawson throws overtop with long arm action.  He has good balance and easy effort throughout his delivery.  His best fastball was 67mph.  His arm speed will need to increase as he matures.  He has a CB with a gradual break at an 11/5 angle.  His CH features sink to arm side.   At times, he slows his arm speed for his off-speed pitches.   Defensively, he will need to quicken his feet and soften hands as he matures.  His throws were accurate with above average arm strength.

Chase Gardner, RHP/3B, Delta, 2019

Chase throws from a high ¾ arm slot with long arm action.   Balance and rhythm were good throughout delivery.  He lands square after an inward turn in his load.  Chase’s FB was 70-71 with slight sink.  His change-up was 54-56 with gradual fade.  He also threw a knuckleball at 56-58.

Caleb Gillaspie, RHP/SS, Ridgeview Jr. High (OH), 2019

As an 8th grader, Caleb displays a balanced set up with a short stride.  His hands do not load.  His bat speed is average with a short bat path to the ball.  His exit velo was 71mph.  Caleb’s backside will need to get through the ball better as he matures.  His fastball was heavy and thrown for strikes at 69-73mph.  The curveball had 11/5 shape with gradual break at 54-57mph.  Caleb’s change-up was straight and thrown for strikes.  Defensively, his hands were average and footwork needs improvement.  As he matures, he will need to play through the ball better.    He ran a 8.15 60yd dash.  His arm strength was one of his best assets at the showcase. 

Miles Hegeduis, LHP, Zionsville HS, 2019

Miles is a 5-foot-11, 160 pound 8th grader.  The southpaw pitches from a high 3/4 slot with quick arm speed.  Arm action is long and loose.  Drop and drive delivery with uphill shoulders at launch.  Good line to the plate, lands square.  Fastball shows some run with occasional sink at 76-77 with life.  Slider sat 66-69 with a 1/8 shape showing sharp, late break.  Changeup was thrown with near fastball arm speed at 66-69.  Projectable arm in the 2019 class.  

Michael Hoppel. OF/SS, Martinsville HS, 2019

As an 8th grader, Michael features a quick arm at high ¾ arm slot with an athletic finish.  His best fastball was at 77mph.  Michael has a drop drive and long arm action with a tendency to rush through his load.  At the plate, he has an average bat speed and a level swing.  Exit velo was 77mph.  He has a short stride and loads back.  Michael will need to get more out of backside as he matures.  Defensively, he has above average arm strength and made accurate throws.  He has a tendency to play on his heels.   His glove and footwork will need to improve to play the field as he matures.  Bat and arm strength are good for his age.  Michael ran a 7.25 60yd dash as well.

Justin Maynard, RHP/1B, Ridgeview Jr. High (OH), 2019

Maynard has a chance to be very solid on the mound.  His fastball has late sink and thrown for strikes at 70-72mph.  Justin’s curveball has 11/5 shape with sweep action.  His change-up has sink as well.  He’ll need to maintain FB arm speed to sell the change-up as he matures.  Justin stays level with good direction.  At the plate, he has good balance and a small hand load.  Load has a slight arm bar.  His bat speed was above average with an uphill swing.  He produced a 79mph exit velocity.  Defensively, he rolls out his hands as he approaches ball.  The exchange was quick but feet were slow.  Throws were accurate with carry.  Justin ran a 8.2 60yd dash.

DJ Owens, 3B/OF, Noblesville West MS, 2019

DJ is very strong and athletic for his age.  DJ ran a 7.35 60.  He showcased plus actions at the plate.  He has a balanced set up.  With a slight leg kick and smooth back load, he generates good torque.  His hands were fast and got good extension through the ball.  He produced gap power.  His exit velo was the highest at the showcase at 85mph.  Defensively, his arm was loose and long.  Throws had carry with some accuracy.  His top velocity was 80mph from the OF.  His hands were hard and exchange can improve.  With maturity, he could clean up his actions defensively to go along with his strong arm.  

Caleb Raab, C/2B, Batesville MS, 2019

Caleb has average hands and produced line drives during batting practice.  His bat path is uphill.  Backside has a tendency to collapse.  He produced an exit velocity of 70mph.  Behind the plate, he threw 70mph and produced 2.4-2.66 pop times.  His hands will need to get quicker as he matures.  His 60 yd dash was 8.32.

Justin Reed, RHP/SS, Bell East MS, 2019

As an 8th grader, Justin possesses good actions on the mound.  His arm speed is above average with an athletic delivery.  Justin drops and drives to the plate with a long high ¾ arm slot.  His fastball was heavy and was thrown for strikes at 69mph.  Curveball had an 11/5 shape with gradual break at 56mph.  Justin’s change-up was thrown near FB arm speed and stayed straight.  He will need to work on the change-up as he matures on the mound.    At the plate, he has a balanced setup and loads back.  Hands were average as he sprayed the ball.  His lower half was stiff and will need improvement over time.  Defensively, his feet were fluid but exchange was long.  Justin’ plays through the ball well and made accurate throws.  He ran an 8.36 60yd dash.

Kolt Stevens, C/1B, Clinton Central, 2019

Kolt is a switch hitter.  As a LHH, Kolt has a balanced setup at the plate.  He has a short load and a short bat path.   As he matures, he will need to get his lower half more involved.    As a RHH, he mirrors his approach from the left-handed side.  He produced more line drives from the right-handed side.  Defensively, he has long arm action from behind the plate.  He recorded a 2.65-2.84 pop time.  Kolt has good balance and above average hands.  His transfer and footwork will need to be quicker as he matures.  Kolt ran an 8.81 60yd dash.

Zac Tuinei, 3B/RHP, Noblesville East MS, 2019

As an 8th grader, Zac displays plus athletic actions in all areas for his age.    He ran a 7.5 60yd dash.  Offensively, Zac has fast hands with an explosive lower half.  His load can get long at times.  His stride is short and bat path is uphill.  Produces gap power.  His exit velo was 84mph.  He has some cleaning up to do but has good actions overall.  In the infield, he has quick feet and exchange.  He plays through the ball well.  Zac will need to work on backhand footwork.  Throws were accurate with carry.  He threw 79 across the infield.  On the mound he feature a heavy FB thrown for strikes and topped at 78mph.  Slider has 10/4 late break at 66-67mph.  Location was erratic but had good tilt.  His change-up was thrown near FB arm speed.   Overall, he projects the most as a corner infielder.  His future could be bright if cleans up certain areas.

Brady Walden, 3B/2B, Noblesville East MS, 2019

At the plate, Brady has an athletic setup and short stride.  He has a slight arm bar.  His bat speed was above average for age.  He produced an exit velo of 78mph.  His swing was level and possessed good extension.  He squared several pitches up and hit line drives to all sides of the field.  Defensively, Brady will need to add arm strength.  He throws overtop with some accuracy.  He funnels the ball in and will need to play through the ball better as he matures.   Brady ran a 7.52 60yd dash.  

Cooper Williams, 3B/SS, Heritage Christian HS, 2019

Cooper is an athletic player with good arm speed.  Defensively, he threw 76 from the OF and 73 from the INF.  He throws sidearm and the ball tends to run off target.  Hands are soft and footwork is fluid.  Exchange gets long in the infield.  Cooper will need to figure out arm slot and control the run on ball to play the field.  Offensively, Cooper has a tall setup with a short stride.  He has fast hands and level swing.  His exit velo was 76mph.  His 60yd dash was 7.82.

Anthony Wilson, SS/RHP, Park Tudor HS, 2019

Anthony is very athletic and lanky for an 8th grader.  He ran a 7.54 60yd dash.   Defensively, he possesses soft hands and a quick exchange.  He replaces his feet rather than getting through the ball.  Throws were accurate with above average arm strength.  At the plate, he has a tall balanced setup.  Anthony has fast hands for his age.  He has a level swing and gets good extension.  His exit velo was 75.  With added strength, he could be a gap power kid.  On the mound, he struggled with his landing spot which through off his delivery.  He throws from a high ¾ arm slot.   Fastball had slight run (topped at 72mph) and was thrown for strikes.  CB had 11/5 shape and gradual break at 54-57mph.  He struggled on locating the CB.  Change-up was a good pitch with late arm-side run and sink.  He finishes upright but stays level and in line.  He will need to clean up his front side through delivery to get consistent in the zone.

Cayden Wirkiowski, 3B/OF, Pickerington Central HS (OH), 2019

As an 8th grader, Cayden ran a 7.88 60yd dash.  His exit velo was 74mph.  At the plate, he has a balanced set up and short stride as he loads back.  His bat speed was above average.  Cayden hit several line drives throughout his BP.  His backside will need to loosen up and get through the ball.  Defensively, his hands and arm strength are average.  He threw 65 across the infield.

2020's

Clay Burton, RHP/1B,  Zionsville MS, 2020

Clay is a big RHP for a 7th grader.  His FB has late arm-side run and sink at 71-72mph.  The slider had 10/4 shape with gradual break at 63-66.  His change-up had late sink at 66-67mph.  Overall, he showed feel for 3 pitches.  He throws from a ¾ arm slot with smooth rhythm.  His shoulders stay level and he has good direction.  Arm action is long with above average arm speed.  Clay could be a high follow in 2020 class if continues to mature and add strength.

Andrew Coughlan, Mooresville, 2020

Andrew showcased two good pitches on the mound being his fastball and change-up.  The fastball had life with arm-side run and topped out at 73mph.  He sat 70-73mph.  His change-up possessed late sink and arm-side run as well at 67-68mph.  His curveball was more 12/6 and a gradual break.  Andrew had a tendency to slow down his arm on the curveball.  He threw from a high ¾ with long arm action and some effort.  He stays level and finishes athletic.  At the plate, he has a balanced set up and loads back with average bat speed.  Andrew swings uphill and tends to stay stiff in his lower half.  His exit velo was 74mph.  Defensively, his throws had carry with loose arm action.  His hands were above average and exchange was good for his age.  Andrew ran an 8.1 60yd dash.

Kael Fears, RHP/OF, Belzer MS, 2020

Kael throws overtop with average arm speed.  He has some effort in delivery with an average arm speed.  His fastball was 64-65 and topped out at 67mph.  He was rushing through delivery at times which caused him to miss high.  Kael stays in line well and lands square.   His finish will need to improve as he finished upright on some pitches.  Fastball was straight and changeup was thrown near FB arm speed at 60-61mph.  Location was erratic but can improve with polished mechanics.

Brady Gumpf, OF/1B, Saint Joseph, 2020

As a 7th grader, Brady has above average bat speed.  He has an uphill path and hit line drives throughout batting practice.  Brady’s exit velo was 83mph.  His stride can get long and hands tend to drop during load.  Defensively, arm strength is his best feature.  His hands will need to soften over time.  He plays through the ball well in the OF.  At 1B, he works the bag well and made accurate throws.  Brady ran a 7.97 yd 60 dash.  

Ty Johnson, RHP/3B, Fall Creek MS, 2020

Ty has very good actions for a 7th grader.  He throws from a high ¾ arm slot.  His delivery is athletic with some effort.  Fastball sat 67-68 and topped at 69mph.  His breaking ball was more of a slurve at a 10/4 break.  Break was gradual and arm speed was good.  His change-up had arm side fade to it.    He showcased feel for 3 pitches.  Defensively, he has quick feet and exchange but hands need to soften.  His throws were accurate with carry.   At the plate, he has a balanced set up with small load.  Exit velo was 70mph.  He leg kicks and possesses above average bat speed.  Backside has a tendency to collapse.  He produced several line drives.

Cade Kantz, OF/2B, Carmel MS, 2020

Cade, a 7th grader, has an athletic frame and smooth actions both at the plate and defensively for his age.  His arm action was loose at a high ¾.  Arm strength was average as he threw 63 from the outfield.  He plays through the ball well with clean exchange and average feet.  At the plate, he has fast hands for his age and an explosive lower half.  His exit velo was 80mph.  He showcased good pop for his frame and can only improve with added strength.  Cade has good extension and an athletic setup.  Cade ran an 8.2 60yd dash.

Ryan Lynch, LHP/OF, Discovery MS, 2020

As a 7th grader, Ryan displayed plus actions on the mound from the left-handed side.  His fastball topped at 83mph and sat 81-82 with late run.  His slider had late 2/8 break at 68-70mph.  He will need to polish his command on both pitches but showcased a high ceiling on the mound.   Offensively, he has a tall setup.  He loads back with a short stride.  Hands were fast for his age.  He produced line drives with good bat speed.  Ryan will need to get extension as he matures.  Defensively, he has a clean exchange and fluid feet.  Throws were erratic but had good arm strength.  He threw 84 from the OF.  His 60yd dash was also a 7.11.

Logan Missal, RHP/1B, Lowell HS, 2020

Logan sat 68-69 and topped at 71 with his FB.  It has slight sink and was thrown for strikes.  His best off-speed pitch was his CB.  It had 11/5 shape and gradual break.  Both his change-up and curveball were thrown around the strike zone.  Offensively, he produced a 76mph exit velocity.  Hands were above average and swing was level.  Defensively, he worked the bag well and made accurate throws.

AJ Reid, RHP/SS, Highland MS, 2020

AJ had easy effort on the mound as he worked from the stretch.  His arm speed will need to improve as he gets older.  He has a long overtop arm slot with good balance and smooth rhythm.  He finishes in line and athletic.  His FB was thrown for strikes with slight run at 66-69mph.   He has a tendency to slow down his arm on off-speed.  The curveball has 11/5 shape with gradual break at 58mph.  Defensively, AJ has good hands and threw with accuracy.   He needs to play through the ball better but does have a quick exchange.  At the plate, he stays tall and loads back.  He has average balance and bat speed.  Bat path is level and long.  He produced several line drives during BP.  He has a tendency to spin his back foot rather than driving through it.   Overall, he had a very good showcase for age.

Mason Sawyer, C/2B, Bishop Hartley (OH), 2020

Mason has a balanced setup with a long stride.  Bat speed is above average and bat path is level.  He has a tendency to get long.  Mason produced a 74mph exit velocity.  Defensively, he has good arm action and transfer.  He produced 2.24-2.34 pop times.    He will need to improve blocking and receiving as he matures.  His velocity behind the plate was 71mph.  Mason ran an 8.15 60yd dash.  

Ben Strode, SS/2B, Highland MS, 2020

Ben has a balanced crouch at the plate.  He has a leg kick and short hand load.  His swing as a lot of activity, which will need polished with maturity.  His bat path is level and above average bat speed.  Ben has good extension after contact.  His exit velo was 65mph.   Defensively, he has a quick exchange and a short arm action.  His throws had some accuracy but will need to add arm strength, as he gets older.  He played on his heels at times but made the routine play.

Grant Van Winkle, 3B/OF, Granville MS (OH), 2020

Grant showcased an impressive skill set for a 7th grader.  His actions at the plate were very mature for age.  He has fast hands, explosive lower half, and produced gap power.  Grant’s exit velo was 84mph.  His stride is short, loads hands back, and gets good extension post-contact.  Defensively, throws from a high ¾ and has average arm speed.  Grant’s hands were average and exchange was quick.  He plays through the ball well from the OF but will need to work on crow hop as he matures.  On the mound, he features a drop and drive delivery with long arm action.  Arm speed is above average (topped at 73mph).  He stays in line and finishes athletically.  His FB was heavy and thrown for strikes.  Grant’s change-up has late arm-side run and sink.  He also features a Cutter that had decent movement.  

2021's

Jonny Crowel, C/3B, Highland MS, 2021

As a 6th grader, Jonny has a balanced setup and long stride.  Bat speed was average and bat path was level.  He produced an exit velocity of 63mph.  Defensively, he has good footwork and transfer on his throws to second.  His pop times were 2.5-2.76.  Arm action was short and quick.  Jonny receives very well and has a good setup behind the plate.  

Joe Fisher, SS/RHP, St. Luke, 2021

Joe, a 6th grader, sat 57-58 and topped 60mph.  His delivery had long arm action and came over the top.  He had good balance and some rhythm.  Defensively, he had a quick exchange and average hands.  Arm strength will need to increase with maturity.  At the plate, Joe has good balance and a short stride.  Hands were average and swing path was uphill.  His exit velocity was 63mph.

Jake Stank, OF/2B, Horizon Christian, 2021

Jake pitches with a long overtop arm slow.  He possesses a good balance point and smooth rhythm.   Fastball was straight (61mph) and missed high in the zone at times.  His change-up was straight with a fade.  His shoulders stayed lvel and he landed open toward the 1B side.  In the field he possesses average hands and quick feet for his age.  His velocity was 62mph.  At the plate he sets up closed with average balance.  He has a short bat path with consistent line drives.   Jake has a tendency to dive at the baseball.  He possessed a good approach at the plate.  He ran a 8.25 60yd dash.  His exit velo was 72.

Tyler Wakup, SS/RHP, 2021

Tyler displayed very good defensive actions for his age.  Hands were soft and footwork was clean.  His throws across the infield were 57mph.  Offensively, he produced an exit velo of 60mph.  Tyler hit several line drives throughout his batting practice.  Stride is short and load is smooth.  For his age, his bat speed was above average.  Tyler ran an 8.75 60yd dash.

Jarred Williams, RHP, Preston MS, 2021

Jarred threw from a high ¾ arm slow with good balance.  Shoulders were level and he landed square.  Jarred will need to add arm speed and get more from lower half.  His fastball was 62-64mph.  Change-Up had gradual fade and sat 55-59mph.  His direction was in line and he finished upright.  Delivery was drop and drive.

Justin Wooten, OF/LHP, Westlane MS, 2021

Justin projects on the mound with an easy delivery from the left handed side.  His fastball has slight run and was thrown for strikes (61mph).  His next best pitch was change-up, which had arm-side run and sink at 56mph.  His delivery had good balance, lands square, and had smooth rhythm.  At the plate, Justin has above average hands with a short stride and level bat path.  His lower half can improve but he consistently barreled up pitches.  His exit velo was 63.  In the outfield, he played through the ball well with fluid actions.  His arm action is long and loose.  His OF velocity was 61mph.  He throws form a ¾ arm slot and made accurate throws from the OF.
