Initial Class of 2020 Player Rankings (February)

Baseball is a beautiful game that rarely finds itself having a pattern or a sequence that can be described as predictable in any scenarios. This especially commonly is found in the eps and tides of depth in talent in grad baseball years. With the 2020 group as this week focus point, this impressive class is one of the most talented and deep groups British Columbia has produced in years with a handful of pro prospects.

At the 17U Canada Cup this past summer, an event hosted every year showcasing the top amateur baseball talent throughout Canada, it brings together each provincially selected teams’ top players in a full week tournament. BC introduced six of its top 2020 players on this Top Ten Rankings as standouts throughout the tournament albeit as sophomores. Outside of the talents that represented BC at the Cup; Oregon State commit Justin Thorsteinson, LSU commit Theo Millas, and uncommitted prospects in Giordano Mezzomo and Jaeden Reid were all invited to the Nike Pro Showcase, an event in Georgia that features the top 2020 talents throughout North America.

Baseball in British Columbia looks to make a significant impact in the draft and on signing day with talent that will be featured throughout many of the major-conferences in the NCAA. Below we take a deeper-look at each of the Top Ten PBR Prospects from the 2020 Class coming out of British Columbia:

At The Top

Theo Millas RHP / Alpha Secondary, BC / 2020

Report: Big frame at 6-foot-4, 185-pounds with plenty of room for added strength. Millas works out of easy 3/4 slot with loose and clean action. Delivery is repeated for all three pitches with consistent tunnel and release making it difficult for pick-up out of hand. As a commit to LSU, Millas consistently works in the 86-89 range with a recent 91 in October 2018. Ball has life and run, however can flatten out when up in zone. Secondary pitches include a CB backing up at 67-70 that flashes tight spin and a developing change allows Millas to be a 3-4 pitch guy with advanced stuff for his age. An MLB Draft follow by many teams in 2019, Millas comes in as the top ranked player not only in BC, but the country to as a current National Rank at 62 overall.

ARMS A PLENTY

Justin Thorsteinson LHP / 1B / Langley, BC / 2020

Report: Two-way left on left as a 2020 grad who is already committed to Oregon State, the 6-foot-4 205-pound prospect is a member of the Junior National Team and sees innings on the mound as well at-bats while playing first bsae. Plenty to like here as the arm works on the mound with a clean delivery that is efficiently repeatable from the 3/4 slot. The big frame creates downward angle and has shown feel for secondary pitches, but the off-speed still needs polishing to be true LHP pro prospect. At the plate JT shows a quiet balanced set-up that works with gap-to-gap swing plane with flashes of high clean power. A top 2020 grad in the country that will be followed by MLB scouts as a dual-guy leading up to draft day.

Jack Seward RHP / Charles Best, BC / 2020

Report: Seward, an uncommitted right-hander stands 6-foot-1, 160-pounds but gets everything out of his lively arm for the Coquitlam Reds of the PBL. Showing a good fastball running it up to 89 mph, sitting in the 84-86 range, showed some good curveballs closer to a slider feel that worked in the 70-72 mph range with a developing changeup that could become a big pitch down the road as the pitchability and athleticism is there. Expect a big year for this young 2020 arm as he works to add strength to his tall lanky frame. A lot to like and expect to see Seward pitching at the next level.

Gavin Pringle RHP / NA, BC / 2020

Report: A powerful muscular frame of 6-foot-2, 220-pounds, he creates an attack mentality with a fastball consistent at 84-86 via a compact 3/4 arm-slot throughout 2018, Pringle is an exciting follow that could easily sit 87-88 and flirt with 90 this summer. Secondary pitches include a curveball that works 72-74 with late break and a developing changeup. This right-handed prospect is routinely in the weight room and will be seen at many PBR showcases and scout-teams throughout 2019.

Noah Takacs RHP / OF / Oak Bay, BC / 2020

Report: Takacs is an intriguing right-handed pitcher from the Victoria Eagles organization. Hes another guy who passes the eye test the standing 6-foot-2, 185-pounds with a three-pitch mix. He works his fastball 83-84 with a smooth delivery and clean arm action. His fastball has been as high as 86 mph in league action. His curveball has some depth to it and his changeup at 67-70 mph displays arm side run. Look for Takacs to develop it into an above average pitch down the road. Expect big things from this Vancouver Island product as he definitely projects as a starter at the next level.

Vic Domingo RHP / 3B / Saint Thomas More Collegiate, BC / 2020

Report: A 2020 UBC Thunder product stands 5-foot-9, 190-pounds showed very well on the hill during his outing with us in 2018. Domingo showed he can throw 4 pitches for strikes from a high-3/4 slot including a fastball that consistently sat 85 mph, mixed with a curveball that has late downward 12/6 action in the 70-73 range with a good changeup at 74-77 mph, and an average slider at 70-71 mph with some room to improve as his arm strength improves. As a hitter he showed a short compact swing with an exit velo of 89 mph. During his BP session he showed he had some pop in the bat hitting a few deep shots and showing he had the ability to hit to all fields. An uncommitted 2020, this will be a big year for his development.

ATHLETES AND BATS

Gio Mezzomo 1B / LHP / Centennial, BC / 2020

Report: This 6-foot, 170-pound dual guy from the Coquitlam Reds organization showed his best stuff during his bullpen session earlier in the summer. Mezzomo, a lefty with a high-3/4 arm slot showed two good pitches on the day a FB sitting 82-84 mph with good late two seem ride and a CB 68-70 mph with good 2/7 shape. He pounded the zone during his session and it's easy to see the upside as he projects as quality college arm. Mezzomo also showed he can swing the bat with a solid BP session with an easy swing, hitting a number of line drives gap to gap with an exit velo of 84 mph. Mezzomo is uncommitted and will be an interesting one to watch going forward.

Jude Hall OF / 3B / GW Graham, BC / 2020

Report: Hall is a stocky 5-foot-10, 165-pound left-handed bat that sees time in the outfield as well as the dirt on the infield. Can see him projecting more as an outfielder as the arm is accurate and Hall moves well and can easily see his 60 time improve on the 7.03 he ran this summer at the Procase. There is present strength, and Hall showed the ability to manipulate the barrel through the zone and use the whole field with a short stroke and more of a line drive approach. A member of the Chilliwack Cougars, Hall should be on college coaches radars as he is a versatile athlete with feel in the box.

Connor Caskenette C / 3B / Cowichan, BC / 2020

Report: Uncommitted 2020 at 6-foot, 200-pounds from the Mid Island pirates of the PBL. This catcher projects well showing quick feet and a strong accurate arm, was 79 mph from the crouch with a sub 2-second pop time of 1.93-seconds. Showed some line drive ability off the bat during his BP session with some late lift in his swing. This athletic big bodied catcher with some pop in his bat is one to keep an eye on from Vancouver Island as he plays with a toughness and there is present strength that allows him to stick behind the dish moving forward.
