Inside the Recruitment: '15 OF Nick Beck commits to Capital

Nick Bell, OF, Notre Dame Cathedral Latin, Class of 2015

PBR: Why did you choose Capital?

Beck: I chose capital because I felt very comfortable with the campus, players, and especially the coaches. Everything that coach Grice talked about related to me well and really showed his drive to better the program and myself. I feel that Capital is the best choice for me as a student and athlete.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Beck: The only other school that showed true interest in me was John Carroll. I enjoyed JCU very much and liked a lot about the school and program, but in the end Capital was the place for me.

PBR:  Where did the coaches first see you compete and how did your relationship develop with the rest of the coaching staff?

Beck: The first place Capital saw me was at their camp. My summer coach did help me set up a connection at first then I pursued to go to the camp. The relationship started right away at the camp with the coaches giving me tips and complementing my size. We talked a while during and I felt very comfortable from the start with them.

PBR: What role does the coaching staff expect you to play during your first year on campus?

Beck: The role that they expect me to play isn't truly set. I have to work hard and prove to them that I can play at a high level as a freshman. I believe I can and plan on starting off as a pitcher and in my sophomore year develop to play outfield as well.

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?

Beck: The person that has had the biggest impact on me as a baseball player didn't really start until my high school career. My cousin Steven Virost who is currently playing at John Carroll as a freshman played at the same high school as me at NDCL and was always a solid player. I always wanted to be as good as him and that really pushed me on the field and in the offseason.

PBR: Who do you play for in the summer and what was your most exciting experience playing summer ball?

Beck: I played for the Northern Ohio Rebels last summer and my most exciting experience was in a quarter final game in our last tournament when I stretched a single to a double by hustling to second base in the first at bat of the 5th inning while we were down by 2 to result into a 8 run inning and bring my teams energy up to win the game. I felt like a leader by showing my teammates not to give up when we were tired and exhausted.

PBR: What were your stats last season?

Beck: Last season for school and summer ball stats weren't really recorded or given to me. I know I went 3-2 during school ball. Stats aren't too important to me, I just enjoy playing the game and winning.

PBR: Who is the toughest pitcher you have faced in Ohio?

Beck: I am not too sure who the toughest pitcher I have faced in Ohio is. I have faced many and many are good, it's hard to just point out one.
