Junior Future Games Q&A: Dhane Meyers

Brett Thorney
State Scouting Director

Today, we caught up with Dhane Meyers and his mother, Yasmin. They answered some questions for us below about their Junior Future Games experience as part of Team Arizona in 2019.

PBR Arizona will be selecting some of the top 2024 & 2025 grads to represent Team Arizona in the 2020 Junior Future Games at the LakePoint Sports facility in Emerson, GA. The 7th Annual Invitation-Only event will feature the best identified prospects from across the PBR Coverage Area in a five-day event. Participants will be given the unique opportunity of competing against other top-level players while representing their respective state in a high-level atmosphere.

This event will run in conjunction with the PBR Future Games. The Future Games features the top uncommitted players in the Class of 2022 and 2023 from across the Prep Baseball Report’s 35+ state coverage area. It is one of the most highly recruited events of the summer and attracts more than 300 college coaches from across the country each year.

This one-of-a-kind event will include individual workouts and a 4-game guarantee with single elimination bracket play to determine a champion in each age group.

PBR: How did it feel to be selected to play on Team Arizona in the Junior Future Games?

Dhane: I felt excited to be selected to play for Team Arizona in the Junior Future Games.

PBR: As a parent, was the decision to commit to an event like this hard for a player at a young age? What went into that decision? Satisfied with that decision?

Yasmin: We were excited to commit to this event knowing the level of play and exposure Dhane would encounter.  We decided as a family this would be a great way for Dhane to play with other talented and competitive players from the state of Arizona and compete against top players from across the country. Yes, very satisfied with the decision.

PBR: What was the atmosphere & facility like? Were you impressed?

Dhane: The atmosphere was full of excitement and the facilities were nice.  They were the nicest fields I have ever played on.

PBR: What was it like to compete against top players from other states in this showcase and tournament? Were you nervous?

Dhane: At first, I was nervous because I only knew a few people. But as I got to know my teammates, I started to loosen up.  It was a good experience to play the top players from each state because there was a high level of competitiveness.

PBR: Did you get a chance to go watch the older guys in the Future Games? What was that like? Learn anything for the future?

Dhane: I got a chance to watch the older Arizona Team.  They performed well and I noticed that they made all of the routine plays.

PBR: Did you see any scouts roam over to Junior Future Games? As a parent, what does that tell you about the state of recruiting?

Dhane: I did see scouts roaming and watching --and also watching the Junior Future Games. Parent:  Yes, several D1 scouts.  D1 Schools look to this PBR event as a premier event and a key event to identifying current top talent and develop a robust pipeline of upcoming talent.

PBR: Would you recommend other young players attend the Junior Future Games as you did last year? What was your favorite part?

Dhane: Yes, it was a great experience and opportunity to play competitive baseball.  My favorite part was getting to know my teammates and playing on such awesome fields with great competition from other states.

PBR: As a parent, do you feel comfortable recommending other parents to bring their son to this event? Any advice?

Yasmin: Yes! I recommend parents take a look closely at the level of scouting that attends this event, there are very few if any events like this throughout the year that offer this level of play, competition and scouting.

PBR: In the future, Is the older Future Games an event that you would want to attend? Why?

Dhane: The older Future Games is definitely an event I want to attend because it provides the opportunity for recognition from colleges and universities that represent all states.
