KS Class of 2023 Inaugural Rankings

Andy Urban
OK/MO/KS Executive Scouting Director

The arms and athletes in the Sunflower State reload again with this 2023 class. Through the Jr. Future Games last summer and a strong showing at winter showcases, we were able to get some first hand looks at this year’s freshman class.  When this summer gets up and going, we will surely be getting much more first hand experience with these young players, but for now, here is an initial look at the top 40 players in Kansas’ 2023 class.

Top 3 Prospects

Debuting in the No. 1 spot in this Kansas class is St. James Academy RHP/OF Jeremy Comer. Comer possesses a long, lean, a projectable 6-foot-3, 170-pound frame with current wiry strength and room to add much more. On the mound, the right-hander works only from a simple stretch delivery and shows a clean arm action that will allow much more velo to come. Comer commands his fastball down with consistent and late arm-side run at 81-82 mph and touching 83 mph. Comer also shows feel for his off-speed mixing in a curveball, changeup, and slider for strikes. Offensively, the left-handed hitter uses an efficient swing path and shows a middle to pull side approach with nearly all barrels in BP and some pop (87 mph exit velo). In the outfield, Comer shows clean and confident actions.

At the No. 2 spot is SS Jaxon Goldberg (Blue Valley North). Goldberg is a lean and athletic 5-foot-11, 165-pound frame with room to add size and strength. Goldberg shows off his advanced athleticism by running a very smooth 7.10 60 and showing a clean swing from both sides of the dish with advanced pop (89 mph exit velo).  Defensively, the shortstop shows quick and easy lateral movement with advanced hands and feet for his age. Overall, Goldberg is physically advanced with a high end skill set that will make him one of the most highly followed prospects in the state and Midwest.

At No. 3 in the inaugural rankings is OF Davis Nielson (Olathe South). The 6-foot, 160-pound athlete has long limbs and a ton of room to continue to add strength. Offensively, the left-handed hitter uses an athletic and big leg kick before launching his hands on a flat and efficient path to contact with high intent and advanced bat speed (85 mph exit velo). Defensively, shows clean  and confident action in the outfield with a developing arm action.  Nielson’s speed will also serve him well in the outfield and on the base paths, posting a 7.25 at the Jr. Future Games late last summer.
