Prep Baseball Report

Knights Scout Day Class of 2024

Walt Jones
PBR Louisiana

After a long layoff, baseball is back underway in the state of Louisiana. Players and coaches have been looking forward to this for a while and it was good to get back to baseball this past weekend. The Louisiana Knights held their opening weekend workouts and invited our staff over to take it all in. The Knights have multiple teams across the 14U through 18U age groups and we were able to get a solid look at them all over the course of the 4 day event. The organization is Louisiana based but represents several states throughout the southeast.

We will begin our recap of the weekend by giving a quick report on several of their players beginning first with the 14U age group. This group of 2024 grads are talented. It's made up of a really good mix of athletic kids with lots of projection as a whole. This will definitely be a fun group to follow over the course of their high school careers.

John Pearson - West Monroe HS

Physical right-hander with present strength in frame. On the mound, worked 80-82, topping out at 83 mph with impressive run on his 2 seam and feel for 3 pitches. Pearson was a lot of fun to watch compete on the mound but his bat was even more impressive. He took BP with his older brother’s team 17U Black on Friday night. Other than the youth in his face, he fit right in. The right-handed hitter stands in with a slightly closed stance using a small leg lift load. Shows good rhythm in his hands with a compact swing with advanced bat speed and extension through contact.

Jordan Luna - Opelousas Catholic HS

Athletic right handed hitting infielder/right-handed pitcher. Clean, polished delivery with medium arm action into a high-¾ release with feel to pitch. Worked 78-82 mph with a 70-72 mph breaking ball with solid spin and shape. Also flashed solid bat speed and some feel to hit offensively. Will be another high-end player in the 2024 class.

Trey Hawsey - West Monroe HS

Physical framed left-handed pitcher/first baseman with feel to pitch. Fluid, repeatable delivery with a medium, continuous arm action into a high-¾ slot. Showed solid fastball command working to both sides of the plate with a 74-76 mph fastball. Flashed feel for a 63-64 mph breaking ball and also a solid changeup.

Trip Dobson - Catholic HS (BR)

Another talented right-hander for the Louisiana Knights 14U Black  is Trip Dodson. Physical frame with long legs and lots of projectability. Hits from a tall, upright stance using a large leg kick with advanced body control and timing. The right-hander also hopped on the mound for a live bullpen where he sat 79-80 mph with feel for 3 pitches including a high rpm breaking ball.

Ethan Surowiec - Gulport HS (MS)

Big, strong kid with high-end ability. Right-handed hitter with physicality. Hits from a wider base with a simple up and down load. Rhythmic hands into a low effort, on plane swing with solid bat speed and strength at contact. Also, got in a bullpen where he was up to 82 mph with command to both sides of the dish. Also showed feel for a solid changeup and breaking ball.

Hayden Federico - West Monroe HS

For the most part, the indoor workouts were about the arms but the switch-hitting Federico impressed all in attendance with both his presence and ability. Stands in the box with big time poise showing the ability to really slow the game down and track pitches with real feel for the strike zone. Balanced hitter with advanced rhythm and timing, flashing quality bat speed from both sides of the dish. Will be a prospect as he continues into his high school career.

Drake Sticker - Pearl River HS

Athletic left-hander with developing tools both on the mound and as a position player. Athletic delivery with a smooth continuous arm action into a high-¾ slot. Worked 75-78 with arm side action. Jack Roberts - St. Pauls HS

Young southpaw with a solid frame and a strong build. Left-handed pitcher with a short, compact take away into a high-¾ release. Works primarily from the stretch with solid 3 pitch mix. Fastball was up to 79 mph with command while the breaking ball was really uncomfortable for left handed hitters.

Jackson Landry - Ascension Catholic HS

A long framed, strong bodied right-hander. Worked up to 80 mph with his fastball while showing advanced feel for spin on a 67 mph breaking ball. Landry will be fun follow of the upcoming years.

Smaller frame with wiry build. Left-handed pitcher with a longer arm stroke into a high ¾ slot with quick arm speed and feel to spin the baseball. Impressive in his outing this weekend as he worked up to 74 mph with his fastball while spinning a 63 mph breaking ball with good shape.

Juylan Clarks - Shaw HS

Strong, physical left-handed hitting first baseman. Advanced body with present strength throughout. Flashed big power potential in batting practice. Also hopped on the mound where he was up to 77 mph with arm side run.
