Lake Central earns it's No. 1 Ranking

Lake Central travelled to Indianapolis and North Central this Saturday to play in a four team tournament. The other teams Cathedral, Franklin, and North Central. Cathedral and North Central faced off in the first game of the day with Cathedral winning 10-3 behind a 7 run second inning. Ashe Russell(2015) picked up the win.

In the second first round game, Lake Central took on Franklin and Jeremy McKinney. McKinney (2013) RHP sat 82-84 touching 85 on occasion. He showed armside run and a good enough breaking ball to keep Lake Central off balance. Lake Central was only able to muster 6 total hits and score three runs. 2014 Alec Olund, 2013 Nick Kellans, and 2013 Steve Fulk all homered to provide the three runs. That was all Nick Kellams would need. Kellams worked 5 plus innings giving up zero hits and only allowed one baserunner to reach base in the first five innings. Kellams worked his fastball at 75-79 and threw a good breaking ball for a strike to keep Franklin off balance. Kellams ran out of gas in the 6th and allowed three runners on base before giving way to Central Michigan commit Taylor Lehnart. Lehnart came and gave up the first hit and run of the game on a Ty Urban RBI single. Lehnart shut down the scoring threat quickly behind his 88-91 Fastball and hard slider. Lehnart even climbed the ladder and touched 92 twice in the seventh to secure the 3-1 win and set up the matchup of Cathedral vs. Lake Central.

In the final, it was a matchup of power arms Nick McCarty (Notre Dame) and Jimmy McNamara (Central Michigan). Lake Central struck first in the first on an Austen Waggoner RBI double down the left field line. That would be just the start Lake Central needed. McNamara, while working on short rest, struck out 2 of his 9 total in the first and provided all the energy Lake Central needed on the mound. Lake Central would add to its lead in the third when Kellams, Ryan Burvan (2013), and Chase Fieldhouse singled consecutively. Ryan Pachowicz provided the big blow with a two RBI single. Lake Central also added a run on a passed ball in the inning to make the score 4-0. McNamara would not need any more run support. He worked his fastball consistently in at 82-85 and kept hitters off balance with a hard breaking ball. He would only yield 4 hits in what was a very gutsy performance for him. McNamara had thrown 3 innings this past Thursday. The game would end with a final of 7-1. Burvan added a homerun for Lake Central in the 6th.

Players to Watch (Unsigned)

Lake Central

Nick Kellams a L/L outfielder (2013) runs well throws well and swings that bat really well. He is a really solid hitter in any high school lineup.

Chase Fieldhouse a R/R unsigned senior OF. Has every tool you could want from an outfielder. Runs well, throws well from CF, has power and hits for a high average

Alec Olund (2014) My only question going into the season was Olund hitting against above average pitcher. He is going to be pretty good. He is a 2014 infielder to watch

North Central

Youth is the key for North Central Roman Basia (2014) Runs well and is a switching hitting outfielder.

Keaton Conner is another 2014 to keep an eye on (82 on the mound)

Gui Earlywine (2014) is a raw athletic player with good arm strength. He is primarily in the outfield but came in and caught a few innings as well.

Demetrius Webb (2013) Best catch and throw guy in the state

Cathedral

Luke Cuerton (2013) Athletic outfielder who can run and arm is okay. At the plate, he will handle fastballs really well with opposite field power

Ashe Russell (2015) Top 3 arm in his class. Everything you want in a pitcher. Good body, loose arm, good breaking ball

Michael Kseniak (2012) Unsigned senior who is just a really good baseball player. Nothing flashy just really solid at everything.

Franklin

Jeremy McKinney (2013) Strong body kid with good athleticism. 82-85 been as high as 86-87 in previous games good armside run

Mason Clark (2013) Undersized outfielder that runs really well

Jacob Baldridge (2014) MIF with noticeable tools. Interesting follow decent swing, good hands,. Excited to see him play more.
