Lake View Cruises Past Brooks To Win The City Championship

CHICAGO, IL - Wrigley Field played host the annual Chicago Public School City Championship on Friday afternoon. Lake View and Gwendolyn Brooks matched up and it was the Wildcats of Lake View who came away with the 7-3 win thanks to a seven run second inning.

The big seven-run second inning was the only inning the Wildcats scored in but it was more than enough to take home the title. In the seven-run frame, the Wildcats remarkably only collected one hit and that came on a bunt. They drew five walks, were hit by a pitch once, reached on an error and were helped out by a number of passed balls and wild pitches. 11 total batters came to the plate in the inning.

Starting pitcher Jose Cruz had it working all game long for Lake View. The right-hander used a steady three-pitch mix throughout and went all seven innings for the complete game victory. Cruz scattered six hits, three runs, one earned, struck out four and walked two.

Brooks scored two runs in the third inning and got another run in the seventh. In the second, Lawrence Noble reached on an error, stole a base and later scored on an error. Later in the frame Minnesota commit, Jeffrey Massey, walked, stole a base and scored when a two-out pop up was dropped in the infield.

Nathan Gomez, a Marian University commit, led the way offensively for Lake View, going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Eastern Illinois commit, Francois Castillo finished 1-for-2, was intentionally walked twice and scored a run.

Christopher Henry, who started on the mound for Brooks, struck out eight in five innings of work. He was also the only offensive player on Brooks to record multiple hits. Henry finished 2-for-3 with a double. Brandon Simon, an Arkansas-Pine Bluff commit, finished 1-for-3 with a triple in the losing effort.
