Late Runs Lift Plainfield to a Victory

Plainfield, IN – Late runs lifted Plainfield to a victory over Whiteland on Wednesday. Whiteland held a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning, but Plainfield managed to put up three of their own in the bottom half of the frame, all with two outs. Plainfield would then add an insurance run in the sixth.

Whiteland jumped on the board early when CF Taylor Scott (2012) had a two out single bringing home Tommy Riegel (2012). Plainfield answered back in the third when their centerfielder Dillon Hughes (2013) lined a ball into right field that scored Matt Spaulding (2013), tying the game at 1-1 after three. Whiteland would break the tie in the fourth with a RBI double down the left field line from Wyatt Chitwood (2014). Chitwood would score a few pitches later on a wild pitch, giving Whiteland a 3-1 advantage.

In the fifth Whiteland looked like they would close out the inning holding onto a 3-1 lead, but with two outs Hughes picked up his second RBI single in the game, again driving in Spaulding, who earlier doubled to lead off the inning.  Hughes’ single was followed by a walk and a hit by pitch to load the bases. With the bases loaded Gabe Burkhart (2014) was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game bringing in another run to tie the game at three. Plainfield added another run in the inning when a ball got by the catcher bringing pinch runner Brent O’Bold (2013) home.

Whiteland looked ready to respond with a rally of their own in the top of the sixth after the first two batters reached on walks. Sophomore LHP Connor Mitchell entered the game to stop the potential rally getting two strikeouts and another out on a ground ball that hit a runner. In the 7th Mitchell closed out the game striking out all three batters he faced.
