Terre Haute – New Haven and Terre Haute South faced off in the opener of the Terre Haute South Braves Bash on Friday afternoon. The players not only had to battle each other, but deal with cold temps and strong winds.

The Braves got a strong pitching performance from starter Logan Ames. Ames would go five innings allowing just one run on three hits. New Haven’s Brayton Rudolph was pretty good as well allowing two earned runs on six hits in six innings of work.

Terre Haute South jumped on the board in the first. Jared Wolfe singled to start the inning and Jacob Johnson hit into a fielder’s choice. Johnson then stole second and Justin Jenkins drove him in with a line drive single.

New Haven answered right away as Hayden Graham led off the top of the second with a double to the center field fence to get the offense started. A groundball moved him to third and another groundout by Vance Shearer brought Graham in to score.

The game stayed locked at one until the bottom of the fourth when Terre Haute South moved ahead for good. Jenkins got the offense going with a leadoff single into right field, he then stole second base with ease and moved to third on a groundout. Timmy Herrin came up next and hit a groundball up the middle beating out the throw from the second baseman, allowing Jenkins to score the Braves second run.

New Haven had a chance to make a comeback in the top of the sixth, but couldn’t bring a run across. Garrett Mohler led off the inning with an infield single that ended the day for Ames. Clayton Streeter relieved Ames and got the next two batters out, but a wild pitch and a walk put runners on the corners with two outs. Jenkins came to the mound next and the lefty was able to get a strikeout to end the threat.

The Braves added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. With the bases loaded and one out New Haven starter Rudolph got a groundball right back to him. After getting the out at the plate the catcher’s throw to first went down the line allowing a run from second, Jenkins, to score giving the Braves a 3-1 lead.

Jenkins came back out for the top of the seventh and after a two out error extended the game, he struck out the next batter to end the game.
