Welcome to Looking Ahead. Every Monday, we will go into detail about top games in the coming week that have our staff excited and why. Also, we will list other games that should be good ones to check out between top teams.

This week is going to be a bit different with schools beginning to cycle through their spring breaks around the Commonwealth. This is a process that is going to take a few weeks as many counties have taken different approaches to when they should have break.

FEATURED MATCHUPS

Deep Run Spring Break Tournament:
Featuring host school Deep Run, Midlothian, Monacan, Matoaca, St. Christopher’s School, Lee-Davis, Caroline, and tournament headliner Benedictine. The tournament will be held at Deep Run High School Monday-Wednesday and will feature some of the premier programs in the Richmond area. Matchups for Tuesday and Wednesday will be determined by the results of the Monday games. Best matchup of Monday should be the night game with Deep Run taking on Midlothian at 7 pm. Game times for all three days are 10 am, 1 pm, 4 pm, and 7 pm. Here are some names to remember this week:

Grassfield at Western Branch, Thursday, April 4
Another Southeastern District showdown, this time between the upstart Grizzlies who are off to a 6-1 start, with wins over Great Bridge and Hickory, and the pre-season favorites Western Branch, who are off to a 2-3 start with a couple of tough losses. Look for the Bruins to send senior Antonio Velasquez (Bryant & Stratton) to the mound for the start as they try to get their season back on track.

No. 20 Westfield at Madison, Friday, April 5
This will be a key early-season Concorde District matchup as unbeaten Westfield travels to traditional powerhouse Madison. The Warhawks are in just their second year in the District and are off to an 0-1 start after a loss to Chantilly last week. Westfield has had some off years recently but the Bulldogs are off to a great start in 2019, 5-0 so far and the pitching staff has not allowed a run. Look for Madison to send senior lefty Matt Howatt (William & Mary) to the mound and for Westfield to either go with Danny Leo or Joe Clancy, who combined on Friday’s shutout win over Oakton, with Clancy striking out 9 in 4 innings of no-hit ball. Both teams have deep 1-9 lineups, with Ethan Lipp at the center of the Warhawk order and Kevin Mackmin and Clancy forming the heart of Westfields’ lineup.
