VA/DC Playoff Scoreboard: June 4

It is the last week of action here in Virginia, with VHSL holding its State Championships this week. Today's scoreboard features all results from the State Quarterfinals that were played on Tuesday night.

TuesDAY June 4

 

Class 1

Patrick Henry (Glade Spring) 6, Galax 3
Isaac Eldreth went the distance in the win as the Rebels broke a tie game open with 3 runs in the bottom of the fifth. Eldreth was also 2-3 at the plate, Colby Taylor had a monster day, going 4-4 with a 2B, a home run and 2 RBIs and Drew Miller was also 3-4. For Galax, Kelby Barnes was 3-4 with an RBI and Ian Ashworth was also 2-3.

Lancaster 5, William Campbell 0
Senior Matt Kleinfelter (James Madison) struck out 12 in 6.2 innings, allowing just 2 hits while also going 2-3 with an RBI at the plate himself. Spencer Crittenden had a big day in the leadoff spot, going 3-3 with an RBI and a walk. 

Auburn 7, Chilhowie 6
Chilhowie scored four in the top of the seventh to take the lead, only to see the Eagles rally to win on a walk-off walk. Taylor Newcome was strong for 5 innings on the mound for the Eagles and Brady Harris was 2-4 with a 2B and 2 RBIs. Ethan Armstrong was 3-3 with a home run and 2 RBIs for Chilhowie.

Riverheads 5, Colonial Beach 4
The defending State Champs walked it off on a bases-loaded walk to advance. Riverheads took advantage of 7 walks to score their runs on just four hits, with Michael Robertson going 2-4 with an RBI and Braeson Fulton (James Madison) going 1-3 with a BB and an RBI. Trevor Smith was 3-3 for the Drifters and Mason DeLane (VCU) and Trey Pietras also had multi-hit games.

 

Class 2

Lebanon 15, Appomattox County 1
The Pioneers cruised as Matthew Buchanan (Virginia) struck out 11 in 5 IP. Preston Steele (Virginia Tech) was 3-5 with a home run and 6 RBIs, Anthony Houchins was 2-3 with 2 2Bs and 4 RBIs, and Logan Smith was 2-3 with a home run in the win. Luke Olimpio was 2-3 with a home run for Appomattox.

Page County 8, King William 3
Sophomore TR Williams (Virginia Tech) struck out 9 in 6 innings and hit a home run in the win. Caleb Hilliard and Freddy Stidham both had multi-hit games for the Panthers. Kolby Anderson had a mutli-hit game for King William.

Chatham 5, John Battle 0
Senior AJ Potojecki (Longwood) threw a 1-hit shutout and struck out 10 in the win for the Cavaliers. Matt Arnold was 2-4 at the plate with an RBI.

Stuart's Draft 8, Nandua 4
Stuart's Draft scored 4 in the bottom of the sixth to break a tie and win the game. Zane Armstrong was lights out in relief to earn the win with 3 innings of scoreless 2-hit ball. Trip Christian and Dustin Fitzgerald had multi-hit games for the Cougars. For Nandua, Caleb Ferry and Ryan Ross each had a 2B and an RBI.

 

Class 3

Brookville 6, Lord Botetourt 2
Brennan Abbott struck out 9 in 5.2 innings while going 2-3 at the plate for the Bees. Jared Glinski and Zach Thompson had a big nights at the plate, with Glinski going 2-4 with a 2B, a home run, and 2 RBIs and Thompson going 3-4 with a home run. Brae Farrell was strong on the mound for 5 innings for the Cavaliers and Carson Peggins hit a home run in the loss.

Tabb 7, Warren County 5
Ben Wilson was solid on the mound through 4 innings and Trey Stover, Xavier Martin, and Logan Bartells all had multi-hit games for Tabb. Brandon Marello was also 1-1 with 3 BBs. For Warren County, Jackson Arnold was 3-4 with 2 2Bs and Dylan Johnson had 2 RBIs. 

Brentsville District 5, Park View (South Hill) 4
Senior Jake DeLisi (King) had the game-tying hit with 2 outs in the bottom of the seventh and then also delivered the walk-off game winner in the ninth. DeLisi ultimately went 4-5 with a 3B and 4 RBIs and also struck out 8 in 5.1 innings on the mound. Sam Beard was also 3-5 with a 3B for the Tigers. The Dragons executed small ball and took advantage of walks to score 4 runs on just 5 hits. Justyn Hudson went 7 strong on the mound and and Cameron Sheets was 1-2 with 2 BBs and an RBI.

Fluvanna County 1, No. 24 Abingdon 0
A masterfully thrown game as Fluvanna junior Andrew Ward (VCU) outdueled Abingdon sophomore Chase Hungate. Ward allowed just 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 8 and Hungate allowed a lone run on 4 hits with 6 strikeouts of his own. Jacob Critzer (Lincoln Memorial) was 2-3 and Cameron Shields had a double and the game's lone RBI.

 

Class 4

No. 2 Liberty Christian 11, Kettle Run 0
Junior Quade Tomlin (Liberty) had a monster day at the plate, going 2-3 with 5 RBIs, hitting 2 home runs, one of which was a grand slam. Christian Gordon (Liberty) was dominant on the mound, striking out 11 in 6 innings of 5-hit ball to pick up the win. Caden DeCroo was 1-2 with a 2B and a walk for the Cougars.

Lafayette 8, Midlothian 0
Geo Rivera (Old Dominion) and two other pitchers combined to hold Midlo to 3 hits in the game, with Rivera striking out 7 in 4.2 innings. Luke Hanson, Ricky Sullivan, and Thomas McLaughlin were all 2-3 for the Rams, with Hanson driving in 3 runs and Sullivan and McLaughlin each driving in 1. For the Trojans, Carter Lovasz was 2-3 at the plate.

No. 15 Riverside 9, Salem (Salem) 3
Senior Gunner Canary went 6 innings in the win, holding the defending State Champs to just 4 hits. Sajon Belser (Col of Charleston) was 2-4 with 2 2Bs. Senior Carson Swank (Yale) had a home run and 2 stolen bases and Nick ConnollyJohn Heltebran, and Michael Walsh also had multi-hit games. Parker Stallard (Virginia Tech) was 1-2 with a walk for Salem.

Great Bridge 7, No. 7 Hanover 4
The Wildcats advanced with a complete game from Landon Higgerson (Radford), picking up 6 strikeouts. Great Bridge put up all of their runs in the third inning and were able to hold off a late Hanover rally. Logan Thompson and Jake Harrelson each had multi-hit games.


Class 5

No. 12 Stafford 5, Broad Run 0
Senior Michael Tolson (Western Carolina) allowed just one hit in 5 innings while also going 1-3 with an RBI for the Indians. Eli Lambros had a big day out of the leadoff spot, going 3-3 with a BB, a 2B, and an RBI. Sophomore Connor Hale threw well in relief for the Spartans, allowing 1 run on 3 hits in 4 innings.

No. 5 Hickory 3, No. 16 Prince George 1
Junior Drew Stanley allowed just two hits and struck out 11 in a complete game for the Hawks. Mason Dunaway (James Madison) was 2-3 and Brendan Barnes was 2-3 with 2 RBIs. Wade Clements was 2-3 with both of Prince George's hits and their lone RBI. Buck Forbes (Charleston WV) was strong on the mound, striking out 7 in a complete game and keeping the Royals in it.

No. 14 Halifax 11, Stone Bridge 0
Senior Drew Harlow (Radford) was dominant, holding the Bulldogs to 2 hits and striking out 9 in 6 innings. Zach Lowery was 3-3 with a walk and 2 RBIs, Will Wallace was 3-5, and Tyler Mabe was 2-4 with a walk and 3 RBIs for the the Comets. Ryan Provencal was 2-3 for the Bulldogs.

No. 6 Mills Godwin 5, No. 11 Menchville 0
Sam Landess (James Madison) struck out 11 in 6.1 innings of 3-hit shutout ball to earn the win and offensively Godwin took advantage of 9 walks to score their runs despite being held to just 4 hits in the game. Ahmad Goldson (Louisburg JC) was strong through 4 innings for the Royals on the mound.


Class 6

No. 8 Westfield 5, West Springfield 4
A tight game all the way saw the defending State Champs take the lead in the top of the seventh and then Westfields rallied to walk it off. Jake Hockett drove in the tying run with a triple and scored the winning run on a wild pitch. Hockett finished 2-3 and sophomore Nick Lottchea was 3-4 with an RBI and 2 2Bs. Danny Leo was the winning pitcher with 4 innings of hitless relief and had a double at the plate. Jake Roberti was 1-2 with a BB and 2 RBIs and Bryce Haynes was 2-4 with 2 RBIs for the Spartans.

Ocean Lakes 2, Colonial Forge 0
The second Dolphin hitter of the game, Scott Hinds, hit a two-run home run and that was all of the offense in the game. Micah Singer tossed a 4-hit shutout in making that early lead stand up. Aidan Henderson was strong on the mound for Colonial Forge, going the distance and allowing only 3 more hits in six innings after the home run. Seth Tootle was 2-3 with a 2B for Forge.

No. 13 James River (Midlothian) 4, No. 21 Cox 3
Junior Connelly Early (Army) struck out 8 in six innings, Dean Vencil hit a home run and Ryan Plonski was one of three Rapids with multi-hit games and also drove in 2 runs. Sophomore Sam Slevin was 3-4 and Grant Nelson was 2-3 with a 2B for the Falcons.

No. 9 Lake Braddock 5, Centreville 4
The Bruins scored all of their runs in the first and Lyle Miller-Green (George Mason) was able to make that stand up, going the the distance and striking out 8. Bobby Leitzel (Marymount) was 2-3 with a 2B, BB, and an RBI, Sam Grable was 2-3 with 2 RBIs, and Jay Cassady was 2-3 with an RBI. Eric Bohenek didn't allow any runs in 5.2 innings of relief and Thomas Trinca was 3-4 with a 2B for the Wildcats. Derek Haynie was also 2-3.
