JUCO programs across the state of Maryland began preseason practices back in early January. As the calendar quickly turns and with several teams getting ready to open up their 2019 campaigns in the next few weeks, we begin our coverage of the Maryland JUCO Conference with a preseason preview of all fourteen schools. In each preview, we will take a look back at the 2018 season, examine key players that have moved on or left the program, look at some new faces and key players for the upcoming season, and finally take a sneak peak at whats ahead for the 2019 season. We continue our preseason previews with a look at the Anne Arundel CC Riverhawks.

2019 Season Snapshot

Third year head coach Chris Jenkins will have his work cut out for him in 2019. The Riverhawks lose arguably their three best bats from a year ago in Dustin Gosnell (UMBC), Sam Ryan, and Brady Ward (Hood College). Gosnell and Ryan both garnered All-Maryland JUCO 2nd Team honors and Gosnell also doubled as the team's ace throwing 53 and one-third innings on the mound while striking out 76 batters. Anne Arundel also loses RHP Brady Helinski, LHP Ryan Richardson, and RHP Dominic Stanbery whom combined made 46 appearances on the mound in 2018.

Third basemen Chris Clyde returns after leading the team in slugging percentage and home runs last season. Helping Clyde lead the offense in 2019 will be returners Ryan Key, Noah Rafsky, Blake Rebstockand sophomore transfer Andrew Revels (Mount St. Mary's). Freshman Shelby Wheeler and Villanova transfer Drew Ehrlich also figure to play a big role in this year's lineup. Look for RHP John Iaquinta to step into Gosnell's role as the team's number one starter in 2019. The sophomore started ten games last season and threw 50 and one-third innings. Helping to anchor the staff will be freshman RHP Caleb Musco.

Jenkins may have a somewhat younger and unproven squad this year but he gets the most out of his players and they are always a team to reckon with come tournament time. The Riverhawks advanced to the NJCAA Region XX DII Final Four Round in Jenkins' first year and came up just short of a return trip to the weekend double-elimination tournament last season losing a one-run ballgame to CCBC Catonsville (7-6). Expect this team to grow over the course of the season and make some noise once again in the Region XX Tournament.
