JUCO programs across the state of Maryland began preseason practices back in early January. As the calendar quickly turns and with several teams getting ready to open up their 2019 campaigns in the next few weeks, we begin our coverage of the Maryland JUCO Conference with a preseason preview of all fourteen schools. In each preview, we will take a look back at the 2018 season, examine key players that have moved on or left the program, look at some new faces and key players for the upcoming season, and finally take a sneak peak at whats ahead for the 2019 season. We continue our preseason previews with a look at the Harford CC Fighting Owls.

2019 Season Snapshot

On January 28, 2019 twelve year head coach Tom Eller announced that he would be stepping down from his position at Harford CC to begin a career in pro baseball as a minor league hitting coach for the hometown Baltimore Orioles. News carried fast and many were shocked to hear of his decision. Eller won his 400th game in 2018 and built Harford CC into one of the premier powerhouses in the country at the NJCAA DI level. The four-time Maryland JUCO Conference Coach of the Year won 5 NJCAA Region XX titles and made it to Grand Junction, CO for the NJCAA DI World Series in 2016. Taking over the reins for the 2019 season with Eller gone will be RJ Heinlen. Heinlen, a former pitcher for the Fighting Owls during his playing days coached with Eller for the past three seasons and served as the Fighting Owl's pitching coach.

Two years removed from that trip to Grand Junction, Harford enters the 2019 season with 11 players from last year's team having moved on to four-year colleges / universities and without their ace that went 10-0 on the mound for them last year in LHP Zach Guth (drafted in the 26th round and signed with the Atlanta Braves). It's become the norm at Harford lately with all their success to have a lot of roster turnover from year to year so it doesn't come as a surprise and this years team looks to rival those of years past. Back for the Fighting Owls in the line-up are big boppers Spencer Smith and Lou Testa whom combined to hit 31 jacks and drive in an astounding 117 runners last season. Add to the lineup sophomores Matt ShillingJordyn Smith, Nolan Charlton, Boston College transfer 1B/OF Reyce Curnane, and University of Kentucky transfer OF/INF Spencer Harbert and it doesn't seem as there are any signs of the offense slowing down.

Harford loses their top three starters and closer from last year amongst others but looks to have re-loaded on the mound as well with incoming freshman RHP Marty Neal and five NCAA Division I transfers. Those transfer arms include LHP Ted Blumanuer (VCU), RHP Mitchell Hoon (George Washington), RHP Blake James (LaSalle), RHP Billy Krahl (Hofstra), and LHP John Torres (Cincinnati). Even with Eller gone and several new faces, the 2019 Harford CC Fighting Owls look poised to contend for yet another Maryland JUCO Conference title, Region XX, and Eastern District Championship.
