PBR Maryland released our updated 2023 rankings last week. This week, Maryland Scouting Director Jamie Naill takes a look at four talented players in the class who are uncommitted. Below, you will find video, metrics and scout notes on each of the four players.

Updated MD/DE Class of 2023 Rankings

Amari Allen LHP / 1B / Sherwood , MD / 2023

Following the most recent update to the MD/DE Class of 2023 Rankings, Allen still finds himself as the top uncommitted player in the class, while also finding himself right outside the Top 300 Nationally. A standout two sport athlete, Allen stands at a physical 6-foot-3, 220 pound frame. The two-way talent out of Sherwood High School utilizes quick whip through a three-quarter release on the bump with feel for a true three pitch mix. The fastball has been up to 92, sitting in the upper 80's with feel the the arm side. The slider shows a shorter shape with sharp downer action, producing swing and miss consistently. The changeup is thrown sparingly, but consistently shows fade to the arm side in the low 80's.

At the dish, Allen utilizes quick hand speed and whippy barrel action with some of the most eye-opening natural pop in the state. With exit velocities consistently in the mid 90's (top 100.7), Allen can leave the yard at any time, and showcased this leading Sherwood to their second state title in as many years in 2022. Creates excellent lift with consistent backspin to the pull side gap.

Riley Smith OF / SS / Urbana, MD / 2023

Another two sport athlete, Smith is one of the more intriguing uncommitted players in the Old Line State. The frame is lean with proportional strength throughout, impacting the game in multiple facets. Speed is the separator in Smith's game, not only showcasing the ability to swipe a bag at any time offensively or stretch a single into a double, but the ability to run down anything in center field. Also picking it at shortstop for Urbana this past Spring, Smith has the positional versatility that bodes well for his recruitment. At the dish, the hands show rhythm in a relaxed state and explode through contact with extension through. The strength is to the middle of the field with doubles power that can really translate as more strength is added. Quick hands and pitch recognition should allow Smith to keep his top of the order profile, with the ability to play multiple positions if called upon. With Smith being a star wide receiver and defensive back in football at Urbana, Smith has plenty of options when it comes to playing collegiately. Whichever school Smith lands at the next level will have a juggernaut athlete and an absolute steal in their program.

Ryan Bouma 3B / OF / Sherwood, MD / 2023

One of the more offensively gifted uncommitted players in the 2023 class is Bouma. Physicality in the frame, Bouma showcases the strength on a consistent basis at the dish. The ability to consistently backspin balls to the pull side is impressive, staying within himself in the approach. Line drive tendencies and the ability to hit for a high average bodes well for a middle of the order profile. The hands work quick with controlled aggression at the dish, showcasing the ability to leave the yard on a consistent basis. The glove fits a third baseman profile, as does the frame and arm strength. Advanced athleticism for the size, clocking a sub 7 60-yard at our event last year.

Nathan Rosner LHP / OF / Landon , MD / 2023

One of my favorite "under-the-radar" arms in the state is Rosner. The southpaw stands 6-foot-1, 185 pounds with physicality throughout. The arm works clean with exceptional feel for the three pitch mix. Working out of a close to an over the top slot, Rosner attacks hitters with confidence with the ability to throw any pitch in any count. The fastball sits in the low 80's, ticking into the mid 80's with a big overhand curveball that plays extremely well off the fastball. Able to work all quadrants of the zone, Rosner fits a starter profile at the next level.
