Prep Baseball Report's MN Fall Review took place on Sunday, October 23, 2016. The event was held at the Vadnais Sports Center in Vadnais Heights, MN. The event featured prospects from Minnesota, Wisconsin & North Dakota from the 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020 classes who showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff and multiple colleges in attendance. Thank you to the players, parents, and my staff for such a great event.

There were a number of great individual performances this year at the MN Fall Review; we have broken down the individual statistics below.

As we drill down into the statistics:

+ 17 players ran sub-7.2 60's.
+ 14 players recorded 84+ mph exit velocities
+ 10 players recorded 78+ mph infield throws
+ 8 players recorded 78+ mph outfield throws
+ 6 catchers recorded 70+ mph throws to second base
+ 6 catchers recorded sub-2.1 pop times
+ 22 pitchers were 80+ mph on the mound

Below we have highlighted the prospects at their respective positions with evaluations; listed alphabetically.

 

pitching prospects 

Zach Blumenfeld, RHP, Minneapolis Southwest, 2018
6-foot-2, 185-pound right-handed pitcher. Slower tempo, limited use of front side, short stride down mound, with upright finish. Fastball was 71-73 mph with flat action to plate. Breaking ball is solid with 11/5 shape, short break, and flashes of depth. Inconsistent arm action on changeup with tumbling action to plate.

Mitchell Boesche, RHP, Glencoe-Silver Lake, 2017
6-foot-4, 165-pound right-handed pitcher. Tall skinny build. Long arm action, slight wrap on back-side, and is clean out front. Opens front side early but has extension out front. Fastball shows downhill plane and cut action at 78-80 mph. Curveball shows loose early break; but has chance to improve with development. Running action on split with solid depth. Could make huge strides in college; with instruction and development could be a sleeper in 2017 class.

Taylor Brodersen, C/RHP, Heritage Christian Academy, 2019
5-foot-10, 195-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.75 runner. Easy load and stride, falls over plate occasionally in swing, shows hard contact to middle of field, solid extension through contact and stays on baseball, slight uphill bat path through contact, 81 mph exit velocity. Solid glove with ability to receive, good base and presents well to pitcher, drifts to ball occasionally, needs to improve flexibility behind plate. Has direction with feet and momentum on throws, some length to exchange, quicker release, avg. accuracy and carry to bag. 70 mph arm strength with 2.09-2.21 pop times. On mound; uncontrolled front leg, lands across body, clean compact arm action, stiffer finish on release. Fastball was 74-75 mph with heavy feel around the zone. Solid breaking ball with flashes of sharp break. Stiffer changeup with flat action.

Tyler Brown, 1B/RHP, Buffalo, 2018
6-foot-3, 220-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.88 runner. Square stance, tall upper half, balanced stride, short to contact, clean path through zone, out front at contact, gap to gap approach, 83 mph exit velocity. Makes routine plays, accurate arm, rigid glove, 75 mph arm across infield. On mound; controlled delivery, back arch and shoulder tilt, short arm action, with direction to plate. Fastball works on a downhill plane, upright on release, at 78-79 mph. Early break on curveball with loose 12/6 shape. Changeup is straight with avg. fade.

Nolan Conzemius, C/RHP, Cretin-Derham Hall, 2019
5-foot-10, 165-pound right-handed hitting, 2-way player. 7.52 runner. Pre-set hands, balanced stride with front heel turn trigger, consistent line drive contact with gap to gap approach, 84 mph exit velocity. Smooth actions and moves well behind plate, sticks pitches in zone, above avg. ability to work across body. Flexible behind plate, has direction with feet, length to exchange, longer arm action, throws show solid carry and avg. accuracy to bag, 69 mph arm strength behind plate with 2.13-2.27 pop times. On mound; controlled delivery, slight back arm at balance point, and lands across body with avg. extension to plate. Fastball was thrown consistently for strikes at 78-80 mph. Solid shape and spin on 11/5 breaking ball. Tends to slow arm on changeup; but still has solid fade in zone for strikes.

Connor Cutshall, LHP, Minnetonka, 2017
6-foot-3, 190-pound left-handed pitcher. Slower controlled delivery, slight hitch in separation, decent explosion down mound, and has direction to plate. Occasional life on fastball with running action at 76-78 mph. Showed better shape and depth on breaking ball than previously seen. Changeup has fade with avg. command of strike zone.

Evan Engquist, 1B/RHP, Andover, 2018
6-foot-3, 170-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.78 runner. Body load, leg kick trigger, some length to swing, flare fly ball contact to opposite field, solid contact and drives baseball when stays on and through, 80 mph exit velocity. Narrow base, solid glove, makes routine plays, accurate arm, 68 mph arm across field. On mound; controlled delivery, good direction to plate, slight wrap on backside with clean arm action out front. Fastball was 71-73 mph with arm-side sink. Lands breaking ball for strikes with consistent 11/5 shape. Changeup shows fade in bottom of zone.

Kaden Gage, SS/RHP, Eagan, 2018
5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed hitting, 2-way player. 7.27 runner. Square stance, leg kick trigger, aggressive swinger, loses posture at contact, barrel exits zone early, flashes pop in bat, gap to gap approach, 78 mph exit velocity. Plays flat-footed, rigid movements, has solid glove, accurate to bag, 75 mph arm strength. On mound; controlled tempo, leaks out of balance point early, explodes down mound with solid arm speed, tends to be out and over front leg on release. Slight pie arm action producing 80-81 mph fastball with flashes of life and late run/sink action. Curveball has tight spin with solid depth and lands for strikes. Changeup is firm causing flat action at plate.

Nick Herold, RHP, Coon Rapids, 2017
6-foot-3, 200-pound right-handed pitcher. #69 ranked player that will be making another jump up the 2017 rankings. Relatively new to pitching. Loose actions on mound with easy effort, above avg. extension to plate, ball jumps on hitter, with life. Fastball was 83-85 mph with varying run and cut action. Tight rotation on 11/5 breaking ball. Changeup has fade with solid feel for zone. Highly projectable late bloomer with better days ahead of him.

Dylan Hoffman, LHP/OF, St. Michael-Albertville, 2019
5-foot-8, 133-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Slight tuck on mound at balance point, lands slightly across body, slight cross-fire delivery to plate, clean arm action out front. Fastball was 65-68 mph for strikes. Early break on curveball with 1/7 shape. Shows feel for changeup in zone with solid fade. 7.38 runner. Square stance, body load, double tap trigger, pre-set hands and is short to contact, line drive swing plane, avg. pop in bat, mid/away approach, 78 mph exit velocity. Avg. actions in field, plays himself into bad hops occasionally, sinking action on throws from low ¾ arm slot, 68 mph arm strength from outfield.

Nate Hogan, 3B/RHP, Maple Lake, 2018
6-foot-1, 190-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 8.07 runner. Tall stance, shows rhythm with hands, some stiffness in lower half, inverted swing plane with lift, fly ball contact with pull pop in bat, 77 mph exit velocity. Works around baseball, sure hands, average range, accurate to bag, 75 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; repeats delivery, good direction to plate, slightly stiff shouldered delivery, clean arm out front with extension. Fastball was straight at 77-79 mph. Occasional side spin on breaking ball missing arm-side to plate. Above avg. split with late down action at plate.

Mac Horvath, SS/RHP, Rochester Century, 2020
6-foot, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 6.9 runner. Athletic stance with slight crouch, generates bat speed and has slight lift through swing plane, pulls off/out early occasionally, hard line drive and fly ball contact with mid/pull approach, 83 mph exit velocity. Above avg. arm with accuracy and carry to bag at 83 mph. Smooth actions, works around and through baseball, sure hands, and plays athletically in the field. On mound; shows rhythm and body control in delivery, longer draw on back-side, with fast arm out front from ¾ slot. Fastball has good life, thrown at 85-86 mph, with late run. Throws curveball with quality 11/5 shape consistently for strikes. Late fade with run and sink on changeup. One of top 2020 grads in state of Minnesota.

Joseph Hurth, RHP/SS, Hopkins, 2020
6-foot-1, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; slight back turn delivery, lands hard across body, with crossfire delivery to plate. Clean compact arm action from ¾ slot with explosion and extension to plate. Fastball was 76-77 mph with cut action for strikes. Flashes occasional tight spin on breaking ball. Tends to leave changeup arm-side with inconsistent action. 7.64 runner. Slight open stance, strides to square, short hand load, linear hitter, flat bat plane, mid/pull approach, with flashes of hard contact, 76 mph exit velocity. Plays with energy, solid glove skills, works through baseball, quick release with accuracy on throws, 70 mph arm across infield.

Jack Jahnke, RHP, Waconia, 2018
6-foot-2, 160-pound right-handed pitcher. #48 ranked player in MN 2018 class. Overhead delivery, lands slightly across body, short clean arm action, with hand quickness out front. Fastball was 80-82 mph, touching 85 mph, with late cutting action for strikes. Breaking ball was more consistent with sharper 11/5 break and improved velocity at 71-73 mph. Changeup has fade in bottom of zone.

Alex Jono, RHP/3B, Hopkins, 2018
5-foot-11, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Shows rhythm in delivery, lands open to plate, upright on release, with heavy stab on back side of arm action. Fastball was 73-74 mph. 12/6 breaking ball shows promise with solid shape. Changeup has fade with flat action to plate. 7.87 runner. Crouched stance, balanced stride, long load into slot, flat swing plane, rotational lower half, solid ground ball and line drive contact, gap to gap approach, 79 mph exit velocity. Active feet, raw actions defensively, late glove presentation, tends to stab at ball, long clean arm action, 74 mph arm strength across infield.

Ethan Kippes, OF/RHP, Sioux Falls Lincoln (SD), 2019
6-foot-1, 179-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.52 runner. Active load, inconsistent lower half and bat path, mid-away approach, solid pop in bat, 81 mph exit velocity. Limited momentum through baseball, tends to field and throw flat footed, elevated to target, 70 mph arm from outfield. On mound; tuck and turn delivery, clean arm action, OT slot, with some stiffness in lower half through finish. Cut action on fastball at 69-74 mph. Early break on curveball with 11/5 shape. Tends to slow arm action on changeup causing rolling action to plate.

Jakob Kouneski, C/RHP, Minneapolis Southwest, 2019
6-foot-1, 202-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.82 runner. Easy load and stride, shows rhythm in swing, slight hitch in trigger, transfers weight well through swing, works mostly mid/away, line drive contact with flashes of pop in bat, 80 mph exit velocity. Good direction and momentum on throws, stays low and works through plate, clean exchanges with quick release, throws have accuracy and carry to bag, shows flexibility and moves well with size, good hands, above avg. high school receiver, 1.9-1.97 pop times with 72 mph arm strength. On mound; avg. tempo, moderate effort, slight shoulder tip, works up and over pounding fastball downhill. Fastball was 79-82 mph with heavy cut action for strikes. 12/6 breaking ball has short break, tight rotation, and above avg. depth at plate. Heavy flat action on changeup consistently in zone. Strong Follow in MN 2019 class.

Samuel Larson, LHP, Princeton, 2017
5-foot-10, 150-pound left-handed pitcher. Shows solid command of zone with 3 pitches. Good body control and has good sequence in delivery. Short clean arm action, repeats well, with quicker arm out front. Fastball was 76-78 mph with late running life. Lands breaking ball for strikes with avg. spin and 1/7 shape. Tends to slow arm on changeup; but has good feel for zone with fade in bottom of zone.

Bryce Lovcik, C/RHP, Maranatha Christian Academy, 2019
6-foot, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.08 runner. Balanced stance, body load, linear hitter with good weight transfer, short to contact, consistent hard line drive contact working gap to gap, 84 mph exit velocity. Above avg. carry to bag with accurate throws, will only improve with better direction with feet and staying low on throws, athletic receiver behind plate, sticks pitches, moves well, shows ability to block, and has soft hands. 72 mph arm strength with 2.02-2.14 pop times. On mound; controlled tempo with compact repeatable delivery, short stride down mound, upright on release from OT slot. Fastball was 78-80 mph, straight, delivered on slight downhill plane. Heavy feel to breaking ball with good shape and avg. spin. Shows solid run, sink, and fade on changeup.

Evan Maass, RHP/3B, Minnetonka, 2019
6-foot-1, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; lean athletic build, slight tuck and turn at balance point, hides ball from hitter, with body control and direction to plate. Pie arm action with good quickness and extension out front. Fastball was 81-83 mph late cutting action at the plate. Curveball is above avg. with quality depth, sharp break, and consistent 11/5 shape. Changeup is firm with avg. action; but works bottom of zone well with command. 7.38 runner. Square stance, body load, leans back at contact, lift in swing plane, spray contact across field, 82 mph exit velocity. Solid athlete, avg. actions and glove, has accuracy and carry to bag, 77 mph arm strength. Strong Follow in MN 2019 class.

Nathan Martinson, RHP, Maple Grove, 2018
6-foot-2, 205-pound right-handed pitcher. Pie arm action, solid sequence in delivery, lands across body, crossfire, and hides ball from hitter. Fastball has heavy action with solid life at 82-83 mph. Breaking ball lacks velo; but lands consistently in zone for strikes, with solid 12/6 shape. Shows good feel for changeup with fade to arm-side of plate. Currently un-ranked; Martinson will appear in updated 2018 rankings.

Landon Max, RHP/OF, Anoka, 2017
5-foot-9, 215-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Tuck and turn delivery, long extended arm action, avg. use of front side, lands hard across body. Fastball was flat and elevated at 75-76 mph. 11/5 breaking ball had early loose spin missing arm-side. Changeup had split action with avg. depth to plate. 7.47 runner. Square stance, body load, stiff lower half, lift in swing plane, gap to gap approach, 82 mph exit velocity. Sits back, long release on throws, elevated throws to target, 78 mph arm from outfield.

Noah Meffert, 3B/RHP, Edina, 2020
6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.64 runner. Simple load and stride, balanced swing, slight length to contact, consistent solid contact, clean path to baseball working gap to gap, line drive and  ground ball contact, 79 mph exit velocity. Avg. feet, decent glove, works through and follows throws, long arm action, 73 mph arm across infield. On mound; long clean arm action, lands slightly across body, with upright finish on release. Fastball is thrown consistently for strikes, 77-78 mph, with heavy action in bottom of zone. Early break on 12/6 curveball; with ability to land in zone for strikes. Decent feel for changeup with cutting action and solid fade. Follow in 2020 class.

Logan Meyer, SS/RHP, Totino-Grace, 2020
6-foot, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.64 runner. Narrow crouched stance, steep uphill swing plane, spray contact, mid/away approach, 65 mph exit velocity. Works through ball, solid glove, accurate arm, 69 mph arm strength. On mound; raw mechanically with inconsistent balance point and lands hard on front leg. Clean compact arm action. Fastball was 68-70 mph and elevated in the zone. Curveball showed 12/6 shape to plate. Wobbly action split with avg. depth at plate.

Seth Miller, RHP, Blaine, 2018
5-foot-10, 180-pound right-handed pitcher. Has made good strides in last year. Controlled turn in to balance point, front shoulder tip, has arm speed and gets back to level, solid explosion to plate, with extension out front. Fastball was 82-83 mph flashing solid run and sink in the bottom of the zone. Breaking ball was above avg. with sharp 11/5 break and depth in zone. Heavy run and sink on changeup with feel for zone. Currently un-ranked; Miller will appear in updated 2018 rankings.

Mason Nadolney, SS/RHP, Minnetonka, 2018
6-foot-4, 210-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #10 ranked player in MN 2018 class. Large athletic frame. 7.18 runner. Body load, stays inside baseball well, drives hands through contact with strength, mid/pull approach, flashes of power in bat, 89 mph exit velocity. 86 mph arm across infield, soft hands, works through ball with solid actions, accurate to bag with ability to throw from multiple angles. Moves well and is athletic behind plate, hand strength, sticks pitches in zone, length to exchange and release, has direction with feet and stays low on throws with momentum, avg. accuracy to bag, cut action on throws, 75 mph arm strength with 2.1-2.3 pop times. On mound; short balance point with back arch, works downhill with fastball, slight pie arm action. Cut action on heavy fastball at 80-83 mph. Inconsistent breaking ball with avg. depth and 11/5 shape. Showed good feel for changeup with solid command and fade.

Austin Nikolas, RHP/SS, St. Cloud Tech, 2018
6-foot, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; controlled delivery with good tempo, explodes down mound, very quick arm from ¾ slot, some effort on release, with above avg. action on pitches. Fastball was 86-87 mph with late run and cut action. Breaking ball is above avg., cutter action, with extremely tight spin and short break. Changeup is thrown with fastball arm speed with solid feel for zone. 6.99 runner. Slightly open stance, drops hands in swing, uphill plane, barrel exits zone early, solid contact with pull approach, 81 mph exit velocity. Athletic raw actions in field, covers ground, glove works, above avg. carry to bag, tends to throw flat-footed across, 79 mph arm across infield. Currently un-ranked; Nikolas will make huge jump up rankings once they are updated.

Leo Pfarr, LHP, DeLaSalle, 2018
5-foot-10, 155-pound left-handed pitcher. #38 ranked player in MN 2018 class. Short turn into slightly crouched balance point, short clean arm action, ball comes out of hand well in front. Fastball was 82-83 mph with late running life. Slider was above avg. with sharp sweeping break and 2/8 shape. Has solid fade and sink on changeup; working bottom of zone to his arm-side.

Jake Prybylla, OF/RHP, Mankato East, 2019
6-foot, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 6.89 runner. Square stance, simple setup, slight body load, loose hands in swing, squares baseball consistently, mid/pull approach, 78 mph exit velocity. Good direction and angles to field, plays through baseball, throws show accuracy and carry to target, 80 mph arm from outfield. On mound; slight tuck and turn, swings front leg down mound but maintains direction, short 2-piece arm action, with flashes of extension and finish. Fastball was relatively straight, thrown for strikes, at 76-79 mph. Wraps breaking ball early with tumbling early break and 12/6 shape. Heavy fading action on solid changeup; working bottom of zone well.

Nate Rivers, OF/RHP, Minneapolis Southwest, 2018
6-foot, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.52 runner. Tall stance, body load, high back elbow load, some length to contact, flashes pop in bat to pull side of field, 80 mph exit velocity. Athletic actions in outfield, good footwork, plays through ball, with above avg. accuracy and carry on throws to target, 87 mph arm from outfield. On mound; athletic delivery, long arm action, high ¾ slot, with extension and finish out front. Fastball had late cutting action at 82-83 mph. Breaking ball was above avg. with tight spin and quality 11/5 shape. Avg. action on firm changeup.

Drew Scharber, LHP, Princeton, 2018
6-foot, 180-pound left-handed pitcher. Travels across rubber, crouched tuck and turn delivery, opens front side early, with inconsistent lower half. Fastball has late action at 73-75 mph. Early break on curveball with consistent 1/7 shape. Cut action on changeup with flashes of solid fade.

Ryan Sleeper, LHP/1B, 2019
6-foot-3, 185-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Strong Follow in 2019 class. Athletic frame that should continue to add strength. Good body control, moderate effort in delivery, long extended arm action, explodes down mound with arm speed. Fastball was 84-86 mph with life showing varying run and cut action. Slider is better breaking ball currently; with sharp 2/8 break for strikes. Curveball shows 1/7 shape with avg. extension out front. Above avg. action on changeup with late run and cut. 7.39 runner. Square stance, double tap trigger, creates good direction in swing, line drive swing plane with lift, drives baseball, arm bar causes length to contact, 86 mph exit velocity. Well above athlete at first base, soft glove, easy actions, above avg. arm, 83 mph arm across diamond.

Ben Smith, RHP, South St. Paul, 2018
6-foot-3, 210-pound right-handed pitcher. Smith has a strong, durable build at 6-foot-3, 210 pounds. He uses a compact arm action with extension out front and commands his fastball with late, varying action. It sits 85-87. His curveball has tight rotation and depth with 11/5 shape. Changeup showed fade in bottom of zone. Easy actions and pumped strikes with 3 pitches. He is currently ranked No. 24 in Minnesota, but will be making a significant jump in the updated rankings.

Eathan Soeffker, 3B/RHP, 2018
6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.73 runner. Shows rhythm in load, stays through zone well with barrel, gap to gap approach, hard contact to middle of field, 89 mph exit velocity. Shows good glove, avg. range, long release on accurate throws to bag, 82 mph arm across infield. On mound; relatively clean mechanics, some wrap on backside of arm action, with moderate effort of release. Fastball was 79-81 mph with varying run and cut action. Breaking ball has improved with sharper 12/6 break and tighter rotation. Was around zone with changeup showing flat action and avg. fade. Currently un-ranked; Soeffker will appear in updated 2018 rankings.

Carter Stockert, LHP, Alexandria, 2019
6-foot-3, 185-pound left-handed pitcher. Tall projectable build. Slight crouch at balance point, short arm action, with some extension out front. Fastball was 80-82 mph with late life in zone for strikes. Shows ability to land breaking ball for strikes with 12/6 shape. Good finish on changeup with solid fade in bottom of zone. Interesting follow in 2019 class.

Casey Storlie, LHP/OF, Caledonia, 2019
6-foot-2, 150-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; short turn into balance point, clean 2-piece arm action, with direction and finish to plate. Fastball comes out of hand well, is downhill and has tilt through the zone, at 78-80 mph. Shows solid depth on 1/7 breaking ball with ok shape. Changeup has fade and is thrown for strikes. 7.03 runner. Tall stance, steps across body, cuts off lower half, solid line drive swing plane, pull approach with line drive and fly ball contact, 80 mph exit velocity. Easy actions, avg. tempo and quickness, short arm action, loses momentum on throws, has solid carry and accuracy to target, 80 mph arm from outfield.

Bennett Theisen, 3B/RHP, Minnehaha Academy, 2019
6-foot, 195-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.44 runner. Square stance, avg. rhythm, choppy actions, rotational hitter, present strength, flashes hard pull contact, 85 mph exit velocity. Light on his feet, reads hops well, soft glove, above avg. arm with carry and accuracy, 84 mph arm strength across diamond. On mound; uptempo delivery, long clean arm action, produces above avg. arm speed, some effort and head whack on release. Works fastball downhill for strikes at 82-84 mph. Consistent shape and spin on 11/5 breaking ball thrown with good arm speed. Follow in 2019 class.

Michael Voss, RHP, Edina, 2017
6-foot-4, 205-pound right-handed pitcher. #94 ranked in MN 2017 class. Will move up rankings once updated. Shows solid improvement across board. Fastball was 82-84 mph with late cut action across 2-planes. Breaking ball was sharper with varying 11/5-12/6 shape. Good action and fade on changeup. Recently committed to Concordia-St. Paul and should be a solid contributor for them.

Blake Williams, RHP, Armstrong, 2017
6-foot-4, 190-pound right-handed pitcher. Bigger build with strong lower half. Slight crouch at balance point, front shoulder tilt, up and over with short 2-piece arm action. Works fastball on a downhill plane at 78-80 mph. Elevated breaking ball with loose 12/6 shape. Split action on changeup with solid fade and feel for zone.

Evan Zamec, C/RHP, Orono, 2020
5-foot-10, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.96 runner. Simple hand movement, body load, transfers weight, barrel stays through zone, clean path, has extension through contact, stays inside ball at contact producing hard line drive and pull contact, 87 mph exit velocity. Flexible behind plate, solid receiver, soft glove, late to block occasionally. Inconsistent footwork, out and over lower half on throws, accurate to bag, 68 mph arm strength with 2.4-2.46 pop times. On mound; quick turn into short balance point, slight stab on backside with short arm action, lands on stiff front leg with upright release. Fastball was 74-75 mph with straight flat action to plate. Inconsistent breaking ball with sideways spin. Split action on changeup with avg. fade. Follow bat in 2020 class.
