MN Top Prospect Games- Outfield Evaluations

Prep Baseball Report's MN Top Prospect Games event took place on June 20 and 21, 2016. The event was held at Minnetonka High School in Minnetonka, MN. The event featured prospects from the 2017 class from Minnesota and North Dakota who showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff and 50+ coaches in attendance. Thank you to the players, parents, my staff and Minnetonka Head Coach Paul Twenge for such a great event.

There were a number of great individual performances this year at the MN Top Prospect Games.

As we drill down into the statistics:

+ 36 players ran sub-7.2 60's.
+ 54 players recorded 85+ mph exit velocities
+ 20 players recorded 80+ mph infield throws
+ 23 players recorded 80+ mph outfield throws
+ 20 catchers recorded 70+ mph throws to second base
+ 5 catchers recorded sub-2.1 pop times
+ 47 pitchers were 80+ mph on the mound

John Baker, OF, Grand Rapids, 2017
5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 7.22 runner. Consistent solid contact, mid/pull approach, aggressive swinger with good explosion from lower half, doubles power in bat, 88 mph exit velocity. Attacks baseball in outfield, fields with confidence, appropriate footwork, long arm action, ¾ slot. Solid accuracy to target with 81 mph arm strength.

John Bezdicek, LHP/OF, Osseo, 2017
6-foot-3, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Tall lean body. 7.68 runner. Active load with hands and shoulder turn. Flat plane through zone, finds barrel, line drives gap to gap, with ability to use whole field, 83 mph exit velocity. Decent athlete in outfield, long arm action, solid carry and accuracy to target, 84 mph arm strength.

Seth Cushing, OF, Red Wing, 2017
5-foot-10, 175-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Solid approach at plate with ability to use whole field. Consistent hard line drive contact gap to gap during BP. 7.28 runner with 82 mph exit velocity. Solid athleticism and actions in outfield. Compact arm action producing 83 mph throws with carry and accuracy to target.

Danny Deis, OF, Wayzata, 2017
5-foot-10, 170-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 7.01 runner. Controlled inverted C load, consistent solid contact, gap to gap approach, from line drive swing plane, 78 mph exit velocity. Appropriate footwork and actions in outfield with quick release. Short arm action producing 85 mph throws with accuracy to target.

Tom Dolan, RHP/OF, St. Thomas Academy, 2017
6-foot-4, 180-pound right-handed pitcher/outfielder. Tall projectable frame. 6.95 runner. No stride approach, uphill path, gap to gap approach, 82 mph exit velocity. Easy actions with solid athleticism. Long clean arm action with solid carry and accuracy. 81 mph arm strength.

Nathan Ebeling, OF, Rosemount, 2017
6-foot, 165-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Shows good tools with 7.07 time, 88 mph exit velocity and 87 mph arm strength. Open stance, strides to square, simple flat bat path through zone, mid/pull approach, doubles power. Average actions and footwork in outfield. Fields routine, some length to release, above avg. carry on throws.

Nate Horn, OF/LHP, Elk River, 2017
5-foot-10, 150-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.31 runner. Active load, out and around at contact, flat swing plane, spray hitter, 75 mph exit velocity. Easy actions in outfield, good glove and footwork, clean arm path, average carry with solid accuracy to target, 79 mph arm strength.

Alex Houlihan, OF/RHP, Benilde-St. Margaret’s, 2017
5-foot-10, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Solid tools across board with 7.09 60, 85 mph arm strength and 86 mph exit velocity. Spread stance, double tap trigger, opens front side early, pulls off at contact, flashes power to pull side of field, flashes of hard contact. Solid footwork, works behind and through fly-balls, longer arm action, solid carry on throws with accuracy to target.

Cody Kashmark, OF, Prior Lake, 2017
5-foot-9, 165-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 7.19 runner. Quick twitch athletic body. Slightly crouched stance, quick hands to contact, middle/pull approach with solid contact. Flashes some pop to pull side of field. 86 mph exit velocity. Shows above average footwork through baseball. Short release on throws. Plays with energy. Accuracy to target. Plays with good athleticism. 81 mph arm strength.

Cam Kline, OF/RHP, Forest Lake, 2017
5-foot-11, 180-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.18 runner with compact athletic frame. Square stance with slight leg kick stride producing 93 mph exit velocity. Clean bat path with consistent hard line drives to the gaps. Above average outfielder with arm strength. Throws 89 mph with strong accuracy and carry to target.

Kyle Koken, OF, East Ridge, 2017
5-foot-10, 180-pound left-handed hitting outfielder. 7.32 runner. Simple swing, rolls hands early at contact, short finish, has strength, gap to gap approach, flashes doubles pop in bat, 89 mph exit velocity. Solid footwork and actions, loses direction to target occasionally, stiff arm action, elevated throws to plate, 78 mph arm strength.

Thomas Krause, OF, Rochester Mayo, 2017
6-foot-1, 185-pound left-handed hitting outfielder. Physically impressive left-hander hitter. 6.85 runner. Middle/pull hitter with bat speed. Shows power to pull side of field. Leg kick trigger effects timing occasionally. 91 mph exit velocity. Athletic actions if field with raw footwork and throwing mechanics, limited use of front side, produces 84 mph arm strength with average carry and solid accuracy.

Logan Krenik, OF, Edina, 2017
5-foot-10, 175-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Strong build. Rigid swing, simple path, limited use of lower half, flashes pop in bat to pull side of field, 83 mph exit velocity. Fields routine in outfield, long release on throws, limited extension on release, needs to use legs more on throws, solid accuracy to target. 76 mph arm strength.

Matt Laciskey, RHP/OF, Blaine, 2017
6-foot, 180-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 6.99 runner. Solid balance in box, length to contact with swoop in swing plane, effects contact, flashed hard contact to middle of field, 85 mph exit velocity. 86 mph arm strength from outfield. Shows appropriate footwork with long release. Clean arm action with solid accuracy and carry to target.

Avery Lehman, OF, Coon Rapids, 2017
6-foot-2, 180-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Lean athletic player with good tools across board. 6.93 runner with 89 mph arm strength and 89 mph exit velocity off tee. High elbow set-up, strides slightly across body, gap to gap approach, ability to drive ball hard to oppo gap. Solid actions in outfield. Pie arm action with average carry and accuracy to target with above avg. arm strength.

Alex Lindstrom, OF, Eastview, 2017
6-foot-1, 175-pound left-handed hitting outfielder. 7.3 runner. Left-fielder in college. Aggressive swinger, leg kick trigger, stays down and through at contact, drives balls to gaps, consistent hard contact, 88 mph exit velocity. Raw in OF, new to position, with solid athleticism. Short clean arm action with solid carry and accuracy to target. 82 mph arm strength.

Joe McKibben, OF, Lakeville South, 2017
6-foot-3, 175-pound left-handed hitting outfielder. Long lean athletic body. 7.15 runner at this event. Deep early load, creates bat speed, shows ability to drive ball to oppo gap, line drive swing plane with consistent hard contact, 87 mph exit velocity. Covers ground in OF with long strides, long arm action, solid carry and accuracy to target, 78 mph arm strength.

Chad Musser, OF, Wayzata, 2017
6-foot-3, 195-pound left-handed hitting outfielder. Physical frame that will continue to add quality strength. 7.22 runner. Pre-set deeper load, clean bat path, quiet head to contact, flashes hard contact gap to gap, 90 mph exit velocity. Long actions in outfield with average motor. Above avg. carry and accuracy on throws with long release. 84 mph arm strength.

Gus Newman, OF/2B, Woodbury, 2017
5-foot-9, 155-pound right-handed hitting utility player. 7.31 runner. Leg kick trigger with balanced stride, line drive swing plane, flashes some pop in bat with doubles power, pull approach, consistent solid contact, aggressive hitter, 84 mph exit velocity. Works through flyballs and groundballs with good footwork and quickness. Solid arm action with accuracy to target at 79 mph.

Jake Ogren, OF, Hill-Murray, 2017
5-foot-9, 170-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Compact build with strength. Solid tools across board. 6.87 runner with 85 mph arm strength and 86 mph exit velocity. Slight uphill swing plane, spread stance, slashy swing path, shows pop to pull side of field. Athletic outfielder with good footwork and actions. Long 1-piece arm action, above avg. carry to target, moves well and is aggressive defensively.

Joshua Peterson, RHP/OF, Legacy Christian Academy, 2017
6-foot-1, 170-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.03 runner. Young build that should add quality strength. Balanced swing, leg kick trigger, clean bat path, some extra parts effecting timing, squared baseball well to middle of field, 86 mph exit velocity. Good footwork with quick release in outfield. Shows solid athleticism. Long arm action with solid carry and accuracy to target at 85 mph.

Corbin Reiling, OF, Tartan, 2017
5-foot-8, 140-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Small frame. 7.09 runner. Simple load and stride, gap to gap approach, stiff lower half in swing, flashes strength with 87 mph exit velocity. Solid athlete in OF, quick twitch actions, ¾ slot with long arm action, tends to miss target arm-side, 82 mph arm strength.

TJ Rogers, OF, Minnetonka, 2017
5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 6.78 runner. Deep load, lacks rhythm in swing, flat path, stays in middle of field, average pop in bat, 79 mph exit velocity. Average actions in outfield. Makes routine plays. Elevated throws to plate from ¾ arm slot. 77 mph arm strength.

Alex Schneider, RHP/OF, Bloomington Jefferson, 2017
6-foot, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Lean build with good tools. 6.97 runner with 85 mph arm strength and 87 mph exit velocity. Front heel turn trigger, narrow base, limited use of lower half, loose swing with good hands to baseball, mid/away approach. Solid footwork on defense, fields with ease, long arm action, above average carry, throws around target.

Jordan Schramel, RHP/OF, Delano, 2017
6-foot, 178-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Strong athletic build. 7.09 runner. Leg kick trigger, uses hands in swing, solid pop in bat, off-time occasionally, gap to gap approach, 84 mph exit velocity off tee. Above average carry and accuracy from outfield with 87 mph arm strength. Clean arm action with solid footwork and glove.

Ben Scott, OF/RHP, Mankato West, 2017
6-foot-2, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Tall athletic build. 7.6 runner. High hand set-up, line drive swing plane, inconsistent contact, flashed solid contact occasionally, short finish, 85 mph exit velocity. Long strides and moves well in outfield. Long clean arm action with solid carry and accuracy to target, 83 mph arm strength.

Nate Shoemaker, RHP/OF, Minnetonka, 2017
6-foot-3, 185-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Athletic frame with wiry present strength. Committed shortly after event to Creighton University. 7.18 runner. Mid/pull approach, solid contact, with short finish through baseball. Solid glove and footwork in outfield. ¾ slot with clean arm action. 81 mph outfield throws.

Joseph Swanson, OF, Hopkins, 2017
6-foot-1, 165-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 7.42 runner. Crouched set-up, inverted plane, mid/away approach, uphill bat path through contact, 76 mph exit velocity. Shows athleticism in outfield, good footwork, aggressive routes to baseball, with clean arm action. Solid carry and accuracy to target with 80 mph arm strength.

Ben Thompson, OF, Bloomington Jefferson, 2017
5-foot-10, 170-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. Small compact frame with strength. 7.03 runner with 88 mph exit velocity. Controlled leg kick trigger, gap to gap approach, works to stay on top of baseball, consistent solid line drives and ground ball contact. Plays outfield with energy and solid actions. Stiff arm action from OT slot. Average accuracy to target at 79 mph.

Joshua Tyler, OF, Maple Grove, 2017
6-foot, 170-pound right-handed hitting outfielder. 7.13 runner. Slight shoulder load, rotational bat path in/out zone, spray contact across field, 84 mph exit velocity. Aggressive routes with quick release from outfield, sinking action on throws, solid accuracy to target, and 75 mph arm strength.

Ben Wahlen, RHP/OF, Hopkins, 2017
6-foot-2, 180-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Lean projectable build with wiry strength. 7.29 runner. Shows loose line drive swing with balance. Good extension through contact, consistent solid contact, and uses whole field. 81 mph exit velocity. Active in outfield with good footwork and routes to ball.
