Manchester Comes Back to Beat James River (Midlothian)

Manchester had a nice come from behind victory, taking advantage of a four run bottom of the 6th to beat James River (Midlothian) on Tuesday.

Longwood commit Zane Eggleston started it off on the mound for the Lancers and looked dialed in early as he cruised through the first two innings, only allowing one hit to James River's Dean Vencil. Eggleston was opposed by junior right hander Ryan Portes for the Rapids. Portes did a solid job of holding a young athletic Lancers team down for the first five innings as he had only allowed one run and one hit through five innings.

The Lancers got the scoring started in the second as senior Micah Darrington hit into a fielder's choice that would score Sammy Kirsch, who was courtesy running for sophomore catcher Peyton Robbins who led off the inning with a double down the right field line.

With bases loaded in the top of the third the Rapids would answer back as Dean Vencil, Sewanee commit, would single through the left side to tie it up at 1-1, but Eggleston would work out of a bases loaded jam getting out of the inning with limited damage.

Over the next two and a half innings the pitchers would settle in, not allowing any hits from either side. However, the Rapids would manage to scratch a run in the top of the 5th after Eggleston walked the bases loaded and the Rapids' Ryan Plonski put down a squeeze to score one. The Lancers would limit James River to only one as it was 2-1 heading into the bottom of the 5th.

Portes would get the Lancers in order in the bottom of the fifth with an efficient seven pitch inning. Manchester sophomore Clay Scott would work out of some trouble in the sixth, as James River had two runners in scoring position with one out. Scott got a fly ball to shallow center and a strikeout looking to end the inning. As the Lancers took to the bat in the bottom half they would use a leadoff triple by senior Grayson Kcraget to get things jump started for Manchester. A bases loaded walk would tie things up at 2-2 and the Lancers wouldn't look back after that. Scoring three more to make it 5-2.

Scott would come back out and get a 4-6-3 double play and a fly ball to left field to retire the side and seal the Lancer win.

Final line for Eggleston was four and a third innings pitched, allowed three hits, one earned run, and struck out eight. Scott had a big day in relief throwing two and a third, allowed three hits, zero runs, and striking out one. For Manchester Robbins was 1-2 with a double, scored two runs, and had one RBI. Kcraget was 1-3 with a triple.

Portes threw five and a third on the day, allowing three earned on two hits and striking out four. Vencil had a big day for the Rapids as he was 3-3 with a double and one RBI.
